In this video, Mike identifies the top 2 biggest repair bill Generators, the top 2 faults on the Aston Martin V12 engines which results in the biggest repair bill values.
The absolute travesty, is that both these top 2 repair bill generators can be avoided by a very thorough service regime, and / or by the preventative maintenance action of a primary decat procedure.
Without being put at risk from the 2 faults featured in this video, the Aston Martin V12 engine would hardly ever fail otherwise.
For the Aston Martin DB9, Rapide, DBS, V12Vantage, Aston Martin Virage and new Aston Martin Vanquish, Rapide S and V12VS models. The primary catalysts failing from misfire is the biggest repair cost, the breather circuit failing Is the second biggest repair bill
Find out how the problem can happen, how to avoid both of them so that you dont face a repair bill for either of these 2 issues.
After digesting the information in this video, you will be able to make an informed decision which type of maintenance and repair options is the best suited to look after your Aston Martin.

Thanks Mike , great detailed video, I took your advice and had you remove them for me earlier this year , absolutely a different car that revs out quicker and free and 29mpg driving through Switzerland last month 👍 cheers

Wouldn’t it be better to fix or replace the primary cat rather than removing it?

Why? Removing them will only improve the engine.

Good question. If wanting to maintain the exact same specification the car was emissions homologated against, then remove the ceramic foil primary catalyst and replace it with a superior specification metallic foil catalyst. Although. If removing totally the primary catalyst and upgrading with a higher precious metal loaded aftermarket secondary compared to OEM secondary cat, it could be argued there’s emissions parity. What can not be argued against, is that after the primary decat, MPG is significantly better / more efficient. Meaning by removing the primary cat, it is having ‘a’ benefit to the planet (using less fuel).

Cats choke a engine and robs hp. I have a 2014 Shelby GT 500 662hp 634 torque. You get rid of the cats the engine is less restricted of exhaust flow. Engine breaths and performance is bumped up. Just think of going for a run with a thick towel over your face

What is the approximate price to remove the cats on a db9 and will it still definetly pass MOT emissions? Cheers Rob

The primary cat delete, high flow secondary cats, ECU remap and switch to control the exhaust valves in either silent or loud modes is £3k all inclusive. The bespoke spec (high precious metal loading) cats I have made for me, 100% pass emissions tests / MOT. But as is the case even with a standard car, the cats need to be up to operating temperature prior to the sniffer test starting. We find even standard cars struggle to pass if the cats aren’t hot enough.

Again great advice and my top takeaway never skimp on regular servicing. This technical interpretation of V12 engine and performance is key to the early identification of potential issues. 😎

@@BamfordRosehey I have been watching all your videos. I live in the USA and up in the air of buying a 2003 or new Vanquish S or get a 2012 and up DB9. I am a certified automotive tech so I can do any repairs myself. I love the 2003 vanquish body lines and but also love the DB9. It's a hard decision to make. Keep up the great work

Ok so am I understanding it correct that we can delete means remove primary car converters ? What’s the exact process and where can I find necessary parts I am in Florida near Orlando so unfortunately not in uk so where can I get this service to delete primary cat ?

Thank you so much for all your videos, extremely useful information. I would put out a caution to US based customers, disabling O2 via tune may fail your state emissions check. Depending on the state you are in, they connect the car to a computer and read all the data, if O2 shows not ready its immediate fail. Best is to try mini cats or spacers on the O2 sensors. Again YMMV. If you may have any advice or information for such instances, I know allot of US based viewers would be eternally grateful.

As ever, a very well presented and insightful video - which begs a question, please: what % of the miss-fire level necessary to throw a P0300 - P0306 diagnostic trouble code (DTC) was that observed with concern on cylinder 10 ? The video seems to suggest that miss-fires well below the DTC threshold will still cause damage - is this correct ?

The Vanquish S (2nd gen.) does not have secondary cats fitted - would you then rather change the primary ceramic catalysts with metal ones or is there another solution?
@johnlloyd8040

yes it does ..... total of 6 cats this why removing the primary cats is OK for MoT purposes

The GT12 / V12VS or power upgrade kits applied to those V12 engines often have a secondary cat delete pipe and retain the primary cat. That kit was charged out at what? £15k ish? The primary cat is the cork restricting performance, so much so, any power kit which retains the primary cat is totally futile. So yes, even on those cars with a secondary cat missing. Delete the primary and reinstate with a high flow secondary. Which will deliver twice the power gain for a 1/4 of the price compared to the power upgrade kit.

Many thanks for all your fantastic videos, I’ve got a itch for a 4.7 vantage and if I go for one it will definitely be coming to you , out of interest do you offer a pre inspection service for someone interested in purchasing a vehicle from a Aston dealer or a independent dealer, if so who it be needed to be delivered to your workshop to carry out a pre inspection Many thanks Phil

Yes, we offer pre purchase inspection which is beyond wise, I’d never buy a car without one. We struggle to perform the inspection away from our shop, so whilst we do offer inspections, somehow, the car must come to us.

If only we could remove the primary cats in California...biennially, we have to get the car "smogged" which means a garage plugs a CA-state certified machine into the OBD2 connector to look for aftermarket tunes and presumably misfire rates among other sins. Have you got a feel for what misfire rate will start to break apart the catalyst? Surely 1 or 2 per minute won't generate enough unburnt fuel to cause a problem, so there must be an acceptable rate. My own 2011 V12 Vantage started misfiring at 31,000 miles just like most of these do, it seems. I sourced the coils from an AM dealer in England but was dismayed to see that the new coils were made in China. At least the process of replacing the coils and plugs made it easy to access and replace the $5 Ford PCV valves.
@BamfordRose
@BamfordRose 10 ай бұрын
There’s always a way around in market compliance tests 😉 I’ll cover the misfire rate which crosses a threshold indicating corrective action is needed. Because yes, there’s an amount of misfire which is low enough not to worry over.

Is it at all possible to reprogram the engine ecus to increase their sensitivity to misfires so that they report misfires more readily? Or... Could you get the garage to give you a photo of the misfire reporting screen to allow you to check the report personally? ASSUMING that they have a copy AMDS available!!
