Thank you for this video! We see so many possibilities for better sloped ceiling lighting that we continue to support a range of great lighting options for these projects. The bigger names continually cut back on their assortment because it's such a specialized portion of the marketplace. Others hike their pricing because it's "specialized". We love making sure people have all the recessed options they need, even with tight spacing and very tall ceiling heights, without that shocking price difference. You're right to suggest spending some time and effort getting this lighting right. Thanks, Liz!

Well, I’m glad you’re here! What kind of high hats are you using for that high vault?
@Mendytheguy-kt8xm6 ай бұрын
@lizbiancoismydesignsherpa I'm not sure what to use. The vaults are 98 " long by 46" wide between rafters , 5 sections of these on each side = 10 sections in total 5 on each side of the ridge. The room is roughly 400 sf. Original plan was two 6" lights per section as I only want recessed lights. The problem is I only have 3.5 inches of clearance, so sloped baffle are to deep. The gimbal styles are not so good looking. If there was a way to post a picture in comments would be amazing, cause at this point I'm not sure if I even understand what I wrote.

I looked all over KZbin to find out abut pendants on sloped ceilings and you addressed this in your great video! Any chance you know if you can "swag" a cord but have it covered by a rod, so the cord doesn't look cheap??? Thanks!
@lizbiancoismydesignsherpa2 ай бұрын
Absolutely. They make paintable channels (usually plastic) for cords so they disappear into the ceiling. Look for "cord management/pendant cord solutions"

I'm so glad I found your channel because you really get right to the point. I have 13' vaulted ceilings that peak in the middle of my kitchen and open floor plan. The 4 ugly circular fluorescent fixtures in my kitchen are failing, so I'm trying to come up with a plan to replace them with recessed lighting and pendants. I first tried one of those led wafer lights and it is garbage - too much glare and not enough light. Eventually I found the Lotus recessed LEDs that look much higher quality. My main dilemma is choices. Should I get the sloped version, or is the regular recessed okay? Circular or the unique square housing? Should I go 4" or 6", and how many should I use? My kitchen area is roughly 10x13' including a large L shaped island. I dont mind spending the money for qiality lighting because I'm sure to spend a lot more on an electrician to fix the circus funhouse layout from the original owners. Sorry for the long comment but you have a lot of knowledge and I need help.
@lizbiancoismydesignsherpa9 ай бұрын
The sloped housing from lotus is amazing. The bulb within it also can be directed where you want. As far as how many, stay tuned! There’s no good formula because your space is unique. But I’m working on a system!

@@lizbiancoismydesignsherpa Thank you! I was originally planning on replacing all 4 fluorescent fixtures with maybe 6 of the LED recessed ones in a 2x3 grid... But after watching your videos I'm thinking maybe 3 or 4 of those in a row above my counter workspace is enough, and then 2 or 3 pendants above my island can provide plenty of light. I'm also planning on adding some slim under cabinet lights. Your mention of layers being important has given me some ideas. I have a weird shelf type area running the length of the wall above my cabinets that would be a good spot for some up lighting.

Liz, hi and thanks so much for this informative video! I have a very basic question---think I know the answer, but it's this: I am hanging my 2 pendants in a sloped ceiling living room. The joists run on the slant (high to low) and there is just one joist running perpendicular. There is no attic above the sloped ceiling, so I will have to cut 2 small holes in the drywall above the perpendicular beam so we can fish wires through that beam and over to the lights. As I mark the location of the pendants is it correct that the pendants hang BETWEEN joists for ease of installation or must I use the joists for strength? They are not heavy lights---they are the beautiful Octo lights that are actually shown in your video. Also, if hanging in the center of the living room about 5 feet apart, should they hang 6 feet off the floor, or 7 feet? Thanks so much for any thoughts on this.
@lizbiancoismydesignsherpa9 ай бұрын
The lights go between the joists and secure to them for the strength. In the living room, you want to keep them high enough for tall people to feel comfortable and not to block the line of sight to tv, view etc. I’d go for 7’ or more if you have higher ceilings.

So glad I found your channel. I've watched at least a dozen of your videos in the last week. They have been very helpful. I have a great room with vaulted ceiling. It is square, about 30 ft on a side, so not a bowling alley. The ceiling is about 14 ft high over the 4x8 ft kitchen island. I'm struggling to find pendant lighting that is long enough to reach down to the island. 3:01 I've tried searches with "pendents vaulted ceilings, pendants high ceilings, kitchen lights for tall ceilings"... You get the idea. Multi-thousand dollar lights are not in the budget and I'm not looking for an ornate chandelier. 2 questions: Where /how do I find extra long pendents? 2nd question- often I'm cooking but family is 20 ft away on other side of room. We want to converse without pendent being in the way (30-36 inch above island is only 5-1/2 to 6 ft above floor). What is highest you would put pendent? Thanks for your ideas and your channel!
@lizbiancoismydesignsherpa7 ай бұрын
You sweet thing for watching! Have you tried lumens? Bellacor? 14’ isn’t impossible, but they do get pricier. Look for stair pendants or two story and you may have better luck 🍀
@lizbiancoismydesignsherpa7 ай бұрын
As far as the height goes, 6’ is high enough for even tall people to see under but you could push it to 42” with such high ceilings!

We are designing a combination room (roughly 32 feet x 20 feet), where we will have a sitting area, then a dining area, then a games table with a peaked ceiling (peak along the 32 foot length). We would love some chandeliers to accent each space, but they would not be centered on the peak, and maybe not even in line with each other. Would you have any recommendations? (We will have some recessed lighting as well). Also, the dining table chandelier at 30-36inches off the table, would then be lower than the sitting area chandelier?
@lizbiancoismydesignsherpa2 ай бұрын
They need to be related in style or color or shape since they are open to each other. The dining will be different if you do it right. Plus, you mentioned they aren’t running down the center of the vault so go for it! Just be sure it’s not too busy in the sky!

I would like a beam that sits on top of the rafter the floods light upward and the room has a nice gentle glow. I want a high-quality light. All these LEDs are killing our eyes. Can you recommend any fixtures for rafters and vaulted ceiling areas? I don’t need to see the fixture. I just want to light the vaulted ceiling.
@lizbiancoismydesignsherpa5 ай бұрын
Maybe a monopoint fixture? Most bar uplights are going to be LED. But the worrisome aspects of blue light emission are minimized by the light not directed towards you (hitting the ceiling instead) and if you stick with warm 2700-3000 glow that you want, that also helps!

Can you share your opinion on high quality recessed lighting? I've done a lot of research (and also watched your KZbin videos) and I've learned that the super recessed lighting is the best (where there is no glare). Usually 2-4 inches, maybe even flangeless/trim-less with strong output. In my research I've come across ELEMENT by Tech Lighting for their 2" architectural downlight, as well as USAI. I have no idea which one to pick or how to even make a decision. They are very pricey but I would assume that with the quality. Plus basically everything from Circa Lighting (now called Visual Comfort) seems to be pricey. But I don't need many, just a few task areas that call for strong downlight that are very good quality. Can you let me know how I would choose between Element or USAI or something in that tier?
@lizbiancoismydesignsherpa Жыл бұрын
Either brand is going to give you the best quality fixture. Now, it's a matter of the type you need and who's trim kits you like better. I love the flangeless from USAI or Element's slanted 2-3"? square is heaven! Check the output and CRI but when you get to that level of quality, you'll be just fine!

My sense is that any pendant light suspended on a felxible cord can be used for a vaulted ceiling, even if not so specified. Is this true?

I have a major problem in my rental. Some dummy added an island and lighting but didn't think to change out the chandelier. Now the island takes.over the whole space and I've only enough space for a small table. The chandelier meant for the table was centered in that room but when installed the clearly failed to add in space for island chairs and really the island itself. I could just do a flush light but it's on a vaulted ceiling. Should I do one of those angled flush lights ( it would only be a single one though and look strange) ugh don't know what to do! I can't seal the whole or add a new one!
