Recently, we had an interesting situation at the coin shop I work at. Essentially, a customer had purchased a very valuable uncirculated 1909-S VDB from eBay - or so he thought. The 1909-S VDB is a very iconic and valuable coin, and because of that status, has been the target of a lot of fakes. Thankfully, the fake that the customer bought was very easy to detect and was easily refunded, but not all counterfeit 1909-S VDB pennies are that easy to see. First I'll talk about the specific case that happened in the shop and then go into a presentation about the different markers, whether it is in the VDB, S mint mark, or elsewhere, that you need to look for!
