Ok let me explain: First what is an Index fund? Index funds are mutual funds that follow an index(market trend) like sensex or nifty. So the portfolio fund manager sticks to stocks evaluated by the index, therefore there is absolutely no research, management working to figure which stocks to invest in allowing you to save expenses you incur on investment advisory fees, marketing fees etc on your regular mutual funds. The idea is if the fund mimics the portfolio of the index, its performance will be same as the index. So he says invest in large cap INDEX funds rather than large cap mutual funds because market suggests that it allows for higher returns because of lower expense ratio. Hope this helps!
