Chris. Jolo isn’t safe for foreigners. The tourism office was looking out for your safety. The island is known for being a base for terrorists. If you want to go to other parts of Mindanao check out Davao or Cagayan de Oro. Zamboanga is the most Spanish part of the Philippines. They speak a language thats 70% spanish. Philippines is mostly Catholic. But Mindanao has alot of Muslims due to it being historically close to Indonesia.

Chris, recall the line from the movie, to wit, don't do anything stupid like get yourself killed. Zambo may be a tad better than two decades ago but I would not be found there again unless I absolutely had to be there. And you have a death wish if you have any desire to be found on a boat on the Sulu Sea. Simply recall that it only takes one bad encounter. That applies to everywhere but the SW part of Mindanao and environs has rather worse the risk. Maybe just me from back in day, but time has not erased: Zamboanga Puericulture Center bombing (October 28, 2001 - 5 killed) Zamboanga karaoke barbombing (October 2, 2002 - 4 killed) Zamboanga Fort Pilar bombing (October 20, 2002 - 1 killed) Zamboanga multiple bombings (August 10, 2005 - 30 injured) And where you wanted to go: Jolo videoke bar bombing (February 18, 2006 - 3 killed) Jolo Sulu Cooperative Store bombing (March 27, 2006 - 5 killed) Jolo beheadings of workers (April 20, 2007 - 7 killed)
