I bought a 2017 XRx in October - it was getting a new rear tyre anyway, but after watching this video I got a pair of Trailriders fitted. With one thing and another I haven't had the opportunity to do too many miles yet, but most of them have been in the wet - torrential the day I picked the bike up - and the tyres have behaved impeccably. Not a trace of tracking. Thanks for the advice Russ, and for the forceful way you made it - after watching this, and appreciating the good sense you demonstrate in all your videos, there was no way I was leaving Tourances on the bike.

If Triumph cannot take public criticism from a rider of your experience then shame on them. They should be shaking your hand, inviting you over to the factory and having a true and honest discussion with about the issue. Use your experience and knowledge to improve their products. Probably some narrow minded jobsworth non rider who doesn't understand. I'm a new rider who passed my test by learning a lot from your videos . If you say the tyres are bad in mho they are probably awful. Thanks for the info I've learned something new again.

First of all thanks Russ for an excelent video and all the follow up comments. Only purchased my 2019 Tiger XRt on the 27th July and not quite managed 1k for various reasons. However before even seeing Russ's review felt the tyres tracking but put it down to new bike \ tyres need scrubbing in. Was out during the Bank holiday with another biker and clocked up around 200mile in the day. Very hot day but didn't have the confidence with these Metz, this Tiger is a replacement for my 2017 Tracer with original Dunlop's. The Dunlops on the Tracer are reputed to not be the best and PR4 /5 are the way to go. Having said that I personally didnt have an issue and felt confident - this is not what I am getting from the Metz on the Tiger. This is frustrating, as others have said this bike is not cheap and I am now seriously looking to change to the Avons on a brand new bike. I will be going up to Hinkley in September to the factory visit and will air my views.

Ive just put the Avon trailriders on my tiger 800xc, and im gobsmacked. The feeling of grip is amazing, even on a tyre in the process of being scrubbed in. They have a slight rumble associated with them but its not intrusive or annoying. I had a rear wheel slip going over some debris on a tight turn in the dark but the wheel instantly gripped up without drama. Very confidence inspiring tyre choice. 👍

Dear Sir, Fantastic channel. Your common sense guidance has helped me a great deal on my return to two wheels. More please!!!!!Re the tyres. I had a Tiger 800 ABS fitted with OE Pirelli Scorpion Trails Mk1. These were bias-ply apparently. Absolutely appalling. Problems with tracking white lines and tar snakes in dry and much worse in wet. Also back wheel used to shimmy in wet at low speeds in wet when cold. Dreadful. Switched to Michelin PR4s. Chalk and cheese. A real pleasure in dry or wet. Triumph seem to have previous for this!!Presently on R1200GS with OE Michelin Anakee 3s, which some people criticise a lot, but seem fine to me.Keep up the good work!!

Hi I have a Tiger XRX since 2015. The tires are the Metzeler Tourance. I came from o Honda CB1000R and after I ride the Tiger I complain from the beginning about being surprised by a tracking sensation and lack of confidence of riding the bike. It is a new experience to me since the Honda, although a very different bike, never transmit anything similar. Dealer says that all is right many times after many complaints. I try other tires pressures, preloads at the back suspension but the problem remains. I was even thinking to sell the bike because of this. Thanks for your opinion. I think Triumph should listen to the costumers more carefully. Let's see what will happens about the tires of the next Tiger 900

I had metzeler roadtec 01 SE, they were horrendous for tracking, they were really difficult to get around some roundabout's, they literally wanted to throw you off the outside. However, in the twisties the way they gripped up was amazing with increasing lean. On a rutted road surface you had to just leave the handlebars to wobble about.
@SharadTalekar3 жыл бұрын
I used tourance on BMW 650gs twin, I have felt the tracking effect as well. Also, on corners the tyre walls don't feel rigid, rather they are wobbly, meaning, they tend to bend on walls at 45 degree lean angle.

I have a Triumph Explorer 2012 with Tourance Exp tyres and I totally agree, they track so bad when trying to lane filter that it put me off riding the bike to work. Triumph should understand that people have their own personal opinion, my own personal opinion is I don't like tyres that try to throw me into the side of other vehicles... SAFETY mighty be a minor thing to Triumph but I have other things to live for. If Metzler tyres put me off riding my Triumph then Triumph need to think about that. Thanks for giving your Honest personal opinion thumbs up and keep up the good work.

I made the exact same change on my 2018 Tiger 800 XRT after 3000 odd miles on the original Tourances. Awful things, I agree 100%. I’ve done another few thousand on the Avons now and they’re fantastic in every situation. The bike felt quite strange at first after I switched because all the understeer and stiffness I was used to to was gone and the bike was much more agile and responsive. Triumph are really doing owners a disservice with those Metzelers.

Thank you Russ ! Thought I was imagining things on my Tiger 800 XRT ...standard tyres tracking so badly I shit myself every time I see even the smallest over-banding on straight roads or surface change mid roundabout , £12k bike and the OE tyres are complete shite ..Triumph are spoiling an excellent bike and should do something about it. Or maybe they think being forced to replace tyres at less than 1,000 miles is acceptable ?....cause I don’t !

Interesting. I run Tourances on my gs after trying a couple of alternatives from bridgestone and the next version of the tourance. I went back to the original mainly because they last longer as i ride all year 12k being an average mileage and i struggle to get 6k from anything i have tried. I have noticed this tracking but got used to it. I havent felt the falling into a corner feeling though,they wear up to the edges just fine.

@chriskirk9927 Жыл бұрын
love the comment about the tourance tyres 🙂 being "shit" . I've got the Tiger 800 roadie 14 model year and the OEM tyres at that time, Pirelli Scorpions were also "shit", with same tracking and a really nasty instability when braking when the tyres were well worn, made worse with the OEM Tiger topbox. It worried me enough to take it back to Pidcocks @ Long Eaton to get it checked out but they couldnt find a warrantly fault. Seems Triumph dont listen to customer feedback about OEM tyres. That said, I still have it and love it. Its a great all rounder / tall tourer especially with a few mods. Best one is the Madstad screen, which while extortionate for a screen is brilliant. I've run Avon Trailmax for last two full sets but have a puncture on the rear and pretty bad cupping on the front, but other than that highly recommend them as a replacement - not sure if the AV53/54 are an evo version of the same tyre. Cheers for a good review
@gerhardva765 жыл бұрын
Great review. I have the Scorpions on a Tiger 800XC and it tracks less than the Metz, but its still quite noticeable. The Avons were recommended to me by a few people now, so its 100% what I'm going for next! And well done on not letting the bike companies push you about. B***ards. :)

As I am only going to be on the road , am I right in thinking the Michelin P5's are better in the wet and on the road than the AV54 dual purpose? Interesting video. Just curious (I’m not a bike rider BTW), what are your options as a new bike purchaser, regarding the tyres fitted? Can you say ‘I want Brand X fitted‘ right from the get-go, or, what happens if you fit tyres of your choice during the warranty period, if you don’t like the ones that come as standard? (Apologies if this is a ‘dumb’ question)
@RoadcraftNottingham4 жыл бұрын
Good question. It's unlikely the dealer will change tyres to your choice unless you're about to walk out. It won't affect warranty as long as the tyres are the correct size.

Hello Russ, Thanks for this video, it has been most enlightening! I’ve been riding for 10 months and have been experiencing exactly what you described when going over white lines on my tiger 800, being relatively inexperienced I thought that is just how it feels when you ride over white lines on a motorcycle - I’d never heard of ‘tracking’! Going to get some Avon’s ASAP. Can you confirm please that you had the same size tyres fitted as when you bought the bike, presumably 100/90 and 150/70, because I’ve read some people go for a 110/80 on the front........not that I know what difference it would make!

Hi, have been following this thread from Russ. Bought my Tiger 800 late July and came to the same conclusion very quickly. Haven't changed yet however studying all the feedback and see a predominance of Road 5 Trails. Front tyre size fitted 100/90 - 19, however found out it's quite acceptable (confirmed by my Triumph dealership) that I can change to 110/80 - 19. Long term feedback would be appreciated. Message to Russ - any reason to go for the Avon's and could we have your long term feedback on the Avon's? Would you consider the Road 5 Trails?

In my opinion, paid advertising videos and reviews should be completely different in terms of how they're produced and released. Paid advertisments are fine, but opinions should be kept out of it. Reviews should not be sponsored in any way, that way your opinions are never censored. That said, massive respect for telling it how it is, but also, triumph missed an opportunity to show everyone how receptive to feedback they are.

Mate, it seems that you have a bit of a contradictory problem there, haven’t ya? You start the video sating that Triumph has a problem with what you said, so you had to redo the video. But you then said, “I’ll say what I feel.” Seems not! Unless Triumph is one of your channel sponsors, the who cares what they bitch about. I have never bought a Triumph and I will never buy one. I prefer the reliability of the Japanese bikes and the European bikes, like BMW, with their mechanical issues. But oh well, you must have your reasons why do some Triumph booty kissing. Cheers!
