We need to stop getting hyped about games from names we know, stop seeing them as brands to be loyal to, and start viewing them on a case by case basis. Most of these companies are turbulent and aren't the same talented individuals who made our favorite games growing up. Bungie to 343, Bioware, Bethesda, Ubisoft, Obsidian, and a bunch of others are entirely different staffs from years ago. Researching before you buy, reviews from unbiased and not paid for people/outlets, and demos are more important now than they ever have been.

I don't know how anyone got hyped by this game. The day they released the first trailer, changing the grim dark theme we saw on reveal years ago it was dead for me. Let me be the person to say it: Godlikes (the only race you can play in Avowed) have been genderless in previous games (the Pillars of Eternity series). Godlikes only identify as she/him (and, thanks to recent additions, apparently also they/them). So pronouns have their purpose in this universe, or rather: in this game - simply because you can only play as Godlike. It's no wonder that current reviewers aren't allowed to show the character editor because people get on Obsidians roofs when they see that you can't choose male or female. That said, it doesn't change the fact that you are now forced to play the race that is genderless, (some people may find this woke?) or that you will be blocked if you ask the pronoun question on their social media. That Matt Hansen seems to be a racist and sexist piece of shit, that the game looks like it's been given the high fantasy treatment (despite the once dark fantasy setting), that the animations and graphics look like they did 10+ years ago, etc. A definite reason why I won't be buying the game.

Played PoE1 for 150 hours, couldn't get past act 1 in PoE2. Everything looks so off compared to the first game, like the mood feels wrong, if that makes sense. Avowed goes even more into this high fantasy, colorful pirate mood, which is not bad on it's own, it's just that it is such a big departure from the first game that I don't like it.

To my knowledge the industry have been a mess for quite a while. The absolute majority of dev juniors don't get jobs. Of course, opportunities where scarce before but now it's deliberately skewed. From all the people I know in the industry, the only juniors over the past 4-5 years who's "made it" are from a dei background... Looking back it's insane. Some are talented, for sure. What keeps me up at night sometimes is that a lot of my friends who are more talented devs than I, have just quit the industry & gone back to school for engineering. I can't blame them. Clicked on the video for the "devs panic" portion, hoping for new information not covered a hundred times in my feed. Can I confirm where the "Panic" piece is coming from? Was there any follow up that I missed or did I have wrong expectations. This being said, I am grateful that the LGBTQ portion of the game is highlighted before release. Just gotta stay away from all the old studios we knew and loved. Because they dont know us, and they dont love us anymore. They also dont even have a modicum of the talent they had, just 2 generations ago. It's sad to see these studios fall from grace, but they have to. It's sad though that something being inserted in a genre that doesn't need to be has become so common that the knee jerk reaction is 'pronouns are ok just in the character selection screen'. It doesn't fit in the same way that a character selection screen doesn't have a 'Lithuanian Catholic' option. They are both identities, none that need to be in games, but it is odd one is a selection and the other is not.

So this guy reveals himself to be an Uncle Ruckus of the caucasian persuasion and has inadvertently exposed DEI practices going on at Obsidian. Yeah, not good at all. This was among the last things RPGs as a genre needed: for Avowed to fail not even due to its own merits, but because of the incompetence of the people who are involved in production.
