I really hope so. With modern sensors a Canon G1x or RX100 can perform similar to a 2010 DSRL, and that's what almost everyone needs. You can even make a retro design, and add film simulations. It will sell like crazy

I started looking for a MFT camera late 2023, and, by the time I actually bought one (a not very small Lumix GX8), the increase in prices over the 8 or so months I was looking was quite noticeable. There is clearly a demand. I was seeing. say, a G7 for around $400-$500 with a standard zoom now selling for $200 more. However, I think the problem is not only the competition of mobile phones, but demographics. Most of the people I see using compact cameras are older people who have probably been used to real cameras since well before iPhone days, and often people who look like they may be slightly better off retirees who can now indulge a long term hobby. I go to community events intending to photograph what is happening for the church newsletter, and I see the Council's official photographer with a Canon or Nikon and bags of gear for all occasions, and myself with my camera, and no one else with a camera as opposed to a smartphone. Obviously ours is not a camera-buying district. I think that, apart from compact size, camera manufacturers need also to show people how cameras are used. Do they know that that formidable piece of technology can be used fully automatically until you gain skills? Does anyone show why a camera might be a better bet than a smartphone to capture a soaring bird, a hiding frog, an aerobatic performance, or a school play? Or do they merely assume that people will know these things? I am sure poor marketting is a major reason for the disappeaing compact camera.

You have given me an idea. I bought a Sony NEX-6 with the tiny 16-50 PZ OSS lens because it was cheap and I wanted something to carry around all the time. But it doesn't quite fit in a pocket. You made me realise that what I need is a belt mount pouch for it. Thanks!

To be successful I think a compact camera has to capitalize on some of the innate features that give it an advantage over a cell phone. The RX100VII (example) is still more expensive than most other compacts but it has a EVF, flash, tilting touch screen, 1in sensor, & 24-200mm zoom lens all in body. I contend all that separates it from a phone, but only a niche market is willing to pay for it. This is why I don’t think we’ll see that mass appeal like we did early 2000s-2015. The market is now serious enthusiast and even those guys have to justify it vs what is available at a similar price, (full frame or APSC). Maybe there is a market but on cost and differentiating features it is hard competing with a phone.

I totally agree, I have been looking around for a decent compact camera for a couple of years to save carrying my heavy mirror less camera and lenses when on holiday etc.

Hi There I have just upgraded my Leica D-Lux 8 from the D-Lux 7 which I had for 6 years and before that the D-Lux Type 109 again I used this for 6 years. They are really photo centric not ideal for video but that suits me. I have like most photographers full frame cameras but I need something that fits into a small "mirrorless mover 5" bag and is light as a feather whilst hiking or on a city break/holiday. These little cameras punch way above their weight when it comes to image quality and I am always impressed with the images. Thanks for the video...

How about having a Zf + 28-400 and just use a good phone camera for compactness? By the way, can i design a logo for you to help ne raise some fund to get my very first camera?

I paid about 750€ for my Pen F in 2019, I can sell it today for 1000€, it's tempting, but I've decided to keep it.

I have a Sony RX100 II chose it to get the 1.8 aperture rather than the built in ND filters. Very nice for low light in such a small package. Agree with your comments Bob. Good points made.

To be honest, I do not want a compact camera with a small sensor, but it will be very nice if some camera makers will make a compact full frame sensor Camera in style as the first version of Contax T or Minox 35 ML !

I've got the same film camera Olympus xa2. I noticed your camera flash is missing just as mine. I adhere to smaller factor cameras like the one I bought in 2018 my beloved Canon m100 which coupled with Mieke adapter was very capable. Now i am in a relationship with its younger sibling r50 and I am happy and keep utilizing all the ef lenses with Andoer adapter.

Although I use a lot of larger Fuji and Nikon cameras, including an X100VI, I also have some really nice compact models. My favourite, which I still use regularly, is my Canon Powershot G9. Lovely little camera.

The Fujifilm Mx5 looks like something I would want. Canon tried with the v10. I really want a point and shoot, seems like a lot of brands like insta 360 and DJI are making vlogging/action cams that are just simpler & a bit cheaper than a point & shoot and with weather procreation. I wish they made an Olympus TG-8 but with a flip out screen and 3.5 jacket . They already have a vertical mode and usb c so it’s trying to do what a phone can , also needs an updated bigger sensor. But I doubt it lol

Used Nikon Z50 is probably under £500. APSC and you can put a pancake lens on it.

Manufacturers are probably hesitant to jump on making new compact cameras because as you said, is there a market for them?Sony is already there with the RX100 and ZV lines, and there's ten or more years of very capable used cameras to compete with too. They probably see no way to profit from it so they won't chance it.

I got the Lumix gx85 kit expressly because of the m43 travel friendly small size. Now Panasonic is making m43 cameras using full frame bodies, exactly what I do not want, or rather already have but with larger sensors. In the meantime the Lumix discontinued gm and gx cameras are getting older and more expensive. Very befuddling. I may get an Oly em-5 ii because it's smallish, a good deal, and looks like fun but I'd rather stick with Panasonic menus and batteries. I am a little bit cheesed off.

I would love a compact camera I can use to shoot landscapes, with a nice, compact, optically competent pancake lens with a focal length of 16mm (APS-C). Sony does make such a lens, but it's not that good and it only resolves about 14MP. The camera doesn't even need to do video. But one thing I would really want the camera to have is a really bright LCD display that won't get washed out in bright sunlight. Some of the older M43 compact cameras from Olympus would satisfy my needs, but their sensor resolution is only 16MP - too low for landscapes, in my opinion.

Quick tip: I bought myself a sunscreen for the camera. Costs less then 10 Euro and you fold it around the view screen at the back. Good enough for me, I mean how often do you really need that? So the ‘burdon’ to fold it around the screen is no issue

Panasonic should make a new GM camera, but I doubt they will. Perhaps OM will release a new PEN because they sell those in Japan. A new OM-10 and PEN E-P8 this year?
