Avro York en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avro_York
The Avro York was a British transport aircraft that was derived from the Second World War Lancaster heavy bomber, and used in both military and airliner roles between 1943 and 1964.

Berlin Airflift en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berlin_A...
On 27 June Clay cabled William Draper with an estimate of the current situation:
I have already arranged for our maximum airlift to start on Monday [June 28]. For a sustained effort, we can use seventy Dakotas [C-47s]. The number which the British can make available is not yet known, although General Robertson is somewhat doubtful of their ability to make this number available. Our two Berlin airports can handle in the neighborhood of fifty additional airplanes per day. These would have to be C-47s, C-54s or planes with similar landing characteristics, as our airports cannot take larger planes. LeMay is urging two C-54 groups. With this airlift, we should be able to bring in 600 or 700 tons a day. While 2,000 tons a day is required in normal foods, 600 tons a day (utilizing dried foods to the maximum extent) will substantially increase the morale of the German people and will unquestionably seriously disturb the Soviet blockade. To accomplish this, it is urgent that we be given approximately 50 additional transport planes to arrive in Germany at the earliest practicable date, and each day's delay will of course decrease our ability to sustain our position in Berlin. Crews would be needed to permit maximum operation of these planes.
-Lucius D. Clay, June 1948

The year of my birth. I had a Dinky Toy York in the mid-1950s and I remember the Dan-Air ones at London Airport right into the 1960s.

You could consider the Shackleton a bomber. Later marks had nose gear. I'm not sure where the tricycle Shackleton fits in chronologically against jet bombers though.

These transport planes were a *critical* part of the effort to keep West Berlin from freezing and starving as the result of Stalin's Red Army blockade of 1948-49. Those were *scary* times!!

A DC-3 must look tiny next to this thing. It looks pretty big.

@technoairplaneman You're right, this 'big" feeeling must come from the fact it's a 4-engines aircraft ;-) But in fact, I like the DC-3 much more, with this nice round fuse and aerodynamic design... lovely ^^

Did the British ever have a 4-engine bomber with a tricycle landing gear? Everything I've seen was a tail dragger.
@NoTaboos

Yes; the Avro Vulcan.

Two good reasons for a tail dragger , 1) Saves weight , 2) Easy to maintain. The B24 Liberators nose gear was prone to collapsing .

@@jameswebb4593 Good observation. But then why did future bombers mostly use tricycle landing gear?

Someone should show this video to Angela Merkel to illustrate how good the British were to Germany. Then show a wheel barrow being pushed by the French letting her realize what a nation her pin-up Macron represents.
