The Dutch city of Den Haag, internationally called The Hague, was liberated from the German occupation during World War 2 in May 1945.
The Hague is know world wide for being the city of peace, among other with its Peace Palace that houses the International Court of Justice.
It also is and was the residence of the Dutch government, as well as the capital of the province of South Holland.
On May the 5th, the whole of the Netherlands annually celebrates the liberation of our country in 1945. But in fact The Hague was not liberated until May 8 when the Canadian troups entered this city.
On the evening of May 4, 1945, the news came that German troops had surrendered in northwestern Europe. Some residents of The Hague carefully took to the streets, but they were sent home. The liberation had not yet been officially confirmed and the liberators had not yet arrived in The Hague. Anything could still happen. On 7 May, for example, dozens of people were killed in a shooting on the Dam Square in Amsterdam.
Even when the liberation was confirmed on 5 May, it was not yet celebrated in The Hague. There were still armed German soldiers and agents everywhere. It wasn't until May 8, 1945, when the Allies entered the city, that the celebrations could start.
The film starts with footage of food droppings near The Hague on the 29th of April, a week preceeding the liberation, to aleviate the hunger that the Dutch population suffered during the hunger winter. This time the Allied bombers have a different load than bombs.
Subsequently we see the troups enter the city and being welcomed by the major on the balcony of the town hall surrounded by large numbers of very enthusiastic citizens, followed by many similar scenes in the rest of the city.
In the film we also see close-ups of the arrested top of the National Socialist Movement, in short the NSB, a political party that was founded in 1931 and collaborated with the Germans during the war to run the country.
Please switch on the CC captions to read the events and locations while the film plays.
This is A.I. colorized footage plus the use of the latest A.I. video enhancer software.

°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°
Muziek:

There are two more episodes in this series to be released in the running-up to Dutch liberation day on 5th of May later this week. They will be about the liberation of Rotterdam and Amsterdam. Zicht richting Spui.

Quiz: The second piece of music, Max Anson - Victory Theme, is apparently based on (you could say ´stolen from´) a 1960´s TV series. A prize for the viewer who can name the title of that TV series! PS, I really struggled to find suitable music for this video.

@ronnie9187
@ronnie9187 2 жыл бұрын
@Rick88888888
@Rick88888888 2 жыл бұрын

My Mom grew up in Scheveningen Scheveningen was the small sea harbour next to The Hague, and was vital for the Germans, so Scheveningen became ''Sperrgebiet'', meaning everybody not working in the harbour needed to be evacuated permanently, Because her Dad worked at Port Control, the family was allowed to stay there during the war, and always had fish to trade, and were able to survive the 45 Famine. My Mom told me how she and her 2 brothers and 3 sisters were lying in bed, listening if V1's would fly, or crash, when launched from ramps close by. It was quit common that they crashed.

My mom was born in the The Hague. They lived in a house surrounded on three sides by canals with a little bridge from the street, over the canal, to their yard. Across the street was a huge dike that was long enough to keep out the ocean for many miles. The house she lived in has a thatched roof that somebody had made a sign which said “HONK” on it. the allies did, it wasnt the soviets nor america, but the allies. while it's true the soviets fought fiercely and faced the majority of the german forces, they simply wouldn't have been able to do so without america and britan. the same however could be said of them, without the soviets, any attempt at landing on europe would result in disaster. in the end, the coordination and symbiosis between the allied powers was probably the main factor in their victory over the axis.

Fun fact: More Dutch soldiers died in the SS than defending their own country. Don't let the flag waving crowds fool you - The Netherlands has a murky WWII history.
@Rick88888888

Google NIOD: "It is estimated that between 22,000 and 25,000 Dutchmen served in the formations of the Waffen-SS, of which between 4,000 and 6,000 were killed, killed or missing". Your comparison with the numbers defending The Netherlands are out of context. Either you mention how many Dutch men defended The Netherlands before it capitulated or mention how many were in the resistance and fighting in the Navy or elsewhere abroad thereafter. oorlogsbronnen.nl/ "300,000 Dutch soldiers must prevent a German invasion." NLVeterareneninstuut.nl: "In the years 1939-1945, more than 380,000 Dutch military personnel and many thousands of militarized civilians served the Kingdom." Nationaalarchief.nl: "Towards the end of the war the number of resistance fighters had increased to 45.000". So you simply are talking rubbish. No "fun fact" at all, but wild fantasy or stupid hear-say. Yes, I get very cross about such comments.
