Yes, I also agree with you, Francesca is a marvelous singer. But perhaps with a little bit to much vibrato for barock music? I like the straight tones when it shall be straight, and then a little vibrato when it is necessary. So I prefer Ana Quintans in Pergolesis Stabat Mater, for example. Yes, I know it is a matter of taste, and I absolutely love Francesca also.

Jommelli, where have you been? Jommelli studied with Leonardo Leo, whom I consider the second greatest composer of music of all time and whom his other most famous student, the brilliant Niccolo` Piccinni, called the "greatest of all time." Leo was completely wiped off the map of music but there is a recent revival. I bought a copper engraving of Jommelli from Salzburg and wrote back, "This guy is better than Mozart." Never heard back. Oops. Leo was a very unassuming person, generous with praise for others. He told people that his student Jommelli would some day be known all over Europe. And that prophecy became true. It is time to declare Neapolitan settecento music UNESCO World Heritage. The Neapolitan melodic tonality is in my opinion much warmer than the sometimes programmatic Mozart and Bach. I like the early Jommelli more than the later Jommelli after he left Naples. He returned to Naples later and Charles Burney met him there in his celebrated journey to Italy in search of music ( he also met Piccinni, Voltaire, Diderot, Farinelli and Caffarelli, and so on, all in one trip). Jommelli was really fat (had Neapolitan pizza been invented by that time?). But the music, the music. When I listen to Jommelli, I confess I am listening for Leo's teaching. Leo Depuydt PS I believe that the one Dixit by Leo of which one can hear a performance is superior. It is truly astonishing. Something Mozart or Bach could not do. Leo wrote more than one. I think the Italians threw the others away. Go figure.

Many thanks for your entertaining background on Jommelli, or better Leonardo Leo as being his principal. Again I realize that, though I'm close to 60, I will remain an eternal freshman in to classical music 😅

@@Herman6507 Close to 60? I am happy to report to you, Dear Sir, that you will live forever. I mean: They forget to tell you? So, now you know. So start catching up: Modern western music is Italy's gift to the modern world. There is lots of work ahead.

Très beau techniquement, mais la soprano ne semble pas savoir ce qu'elle chante, elle entonne ça comme une romance à son amoureux, alors que le texte parle de massacrer les ennemis et de soumettre les rois de la terre...
