I live in eastern Europe where there are a lot of Ukrainians and I have a few Ukrainian friends , I remember going to dinner to a friend's house and when they knew I was from India the first thing they told me was how they still love Raj Kapoor , Nargis and Padmini especially the movie Mera Naam Joker. I was surprised that people from another corner of the world still remember his movies.

The movie was originally shot in the Academy ratio of 1.375:1 Shemaroo aka ShameAroo are the worst offenders of destroying Indian films by cropping them and presenting them in incorrect aspect ratios. The saddest part is that they own the rights to a huge catalog of old Bollywood movies.

My favorite 50's classic Raj Kapoor movie is Shree 420, although Awaara comes in a close second. I do agree with your review and the ratings of Awaara, though. I am always surprised that older people from many parts of the world I met can still recite the song "Awaara Hoon" word for word! Hats off to Raj Kapoor's vision.

Yes, I absolutely agree. If I may, I would also like to include "Jaagte Raho" amongst his greatest works.

A trivia for you Jimmy: Awara had 3 generations of Kapoors. You of course know about Raj and his father, the judge in the opening sequence of the movie is Dewan Kapoor-- Prithiviraj's father.

PS. Randhir or Daboo Kapoor, the showman's eldest son replicated this in a movie called Kal, Aaj aur Kal. He was the director and it starred his father and Grandfather.

Thank you, great review as always! I wish you could have watched it on Criterion channel which has it in great quality. Young Raj Kapoor is played by Shashi Kapoor, RK's younger brother and a major actor-producer in his own right. As far as Hindi cinema is concerned, the period from 1950 through mid to late 60's is considered the golden age. It laid the foundation for cinema in a newly independent country but also propagated the values of social democracy, secularism and hopefulness despite poverty and struggle. The likes of Raj Kapoor, Guru Dutt, Bimal Roy and many others along with the numerous music composers, song writers, cinematographers and technicians they collaborated with were healing the soul of a nation and engaging in nation building as much as film making. The story of this cinema cannot be separated from the story of India. I notice this period has not been covered as much on this channel. I know recent and new films are more popular and appreciated more by people today, especially younger people who are in larger numbers on platforms like KZbin. This period of Hindi cinema remains criminally underrated and not talked about enough. It will also put in perspective many of today's Indian 'content films' as well which are often (not always obviously) overrated and celebrated, simply for having a non-mainstream tone and template, or if I may say so, a 'Western gaze'. So I do greatly hope that you will explore classic Hindi cinema from this period more to understand the true Indian film making traditions, as well as to better understand the history of independent India as well. Looking forward!

Good review as always guys :) May I suggest some yesteryear movies that you could watch, Junoon (1978) directed by Shyam Benegal , a film based on Ruskin Bond novel around the 1857 rebellion . It stars Shashi Kapoor ( who plays child Raj Kapoor in Awara ..trivia) . A tale of love and obsession among other things and stellar performances by all actors who were mostly from theatre background, this movie will keep you engrossed. Garam Hava starring Balraj Sahni , deals with the post partition plight of a muslim family and underlines intolerance and bigotry that existed in those times...a movie which has stood the test of time as we are still facing the same questions. Another one that has also stood the test of time is Satyajit Ray's Shatranj ke Khiladi aka the Chess players, set in around 1857 rebellion. Based on Premchand's short story of the same name. Premchand was known for writing themes which were were paradoxical, the ugliest with the most beauteous thought. This movie talks of the daily pettiness in politics we see and indulge in while the world passes away in time. Mirch Masala ...hope you are able to find it as you mentioned earlier that it is not available with subs.( I had talked about this film in another video's comment section). Phew!!! Hope you guys see and review these one day!

@@TheJimmyCage dear Jimmy. You might also like Satyajeet Ray's Gupi Bagha trilogy. The trilogy includes 1) Gupi gayen bagha bayen. 2) Hirak Rajar deshe(my most favourite out of 3) 3)Gupi Bagha phire elo(directed by his son Sandeep Ray) This trilogy was more focused towards children but now it has become a part of every Bengali's childhood.(Even my parents) The storyline is as bizzare as it can get but it will only make you realise what genius Satyajeet Ray was. BTW, Gupi Bagha was Satyajeet Ray's biggest box office sucess. Please give it a shot.

Thanks for another great review. This has inspired me to watch the movie again. Will look for a version with the original aspect ratio. You probably already know this, but the music of this movie remains far more popular in countries of the former Soviet Union than it is in India. This movie was a great symbol of the soft power India has held in the world, which is now rapidly dwindling because of the current political dispensation. I'm still surprised when I come across somebody from Azerbaijan or Kazakhstan who can sing the whole of 'Awara Hoon' even though they don't understand the language.

Ohh boy!!! I am almost mystified and stupefied to see you guys commenting on very delicate intricacies of this classic (and many other Bollywood movies as well) without knowing a damn thing about Hindi language and the vastness and diversity of the Indian culture and society. Your reactions sound keen but they are also very much scripted (generously helped by some Hindi speaking Indian who has lent his services to help you with your reaction videos😂). Wonder, what percentage of your praise or criticism is actually genuine🤔. My humble suggestion: since you guys are truly and visibly interested and neck deep in reviewing Indian (Hindi) movies, please at least join some Hindi speaking course which may help you with your movie reviews, in a more genuine manner. Thanks and God bless 🙏🏽🙌
