Thanks for the positive and informative video! I enjoy your enthusiasm. One new thing (that came out recently, years after you made the video): it is nowadays possible to use contactless payments on all Dutch public transport. Simply check-in and check-out using a smartphone or contactless bankcard. This eliminates the need for buying an anonymous ov-chipcard, as travel prices for contactless payments are the same as traveling with an anonymous ov-chipcard. I do think this is a positive addition, making it much easier for tourists and occasional travelers. Keep up the good work!

You missed 1 important tip for tourists. I took the train from the airport, got a ticket, went downstairs to the train & the door to the train closed just as I got there. I thought I had just missed the train & would have to wait for the next one. The person behind me just stepped around me & pressed the button on the door & it opened. I just like pretended yeah I was about to do that & jumped on the train. Seriously I had never seen a train where you had to press a button to open a door. I was laughing at myself when I got on all part of the journey.

It may depend on how big, but a regular large suitcase shouldn't be a problem. If they have their dimensions and are concerned, I'd suggest contacting Connexxion (the bus company) on Twitter. Thanks for posting this video, very well done and makes the train seem easy to use in the Netherlands. What happens to the balance left on the chip card when you leave the Netherlands? Do you lose it or can you actually take your balance down to zero while traveling via train, tram or bus?
@aWanderlustForLife2 жыл бұрын
I'm afraid I don't know the answer. But personally, one of the souvenirs I keep are these cards. I never run it all the way down anywhere I go 😂
@weeardguy Жыл бұрын
You can run your balance down to -4 Euro at max if you want to tap out in bus tram and metro. If your card is about to expire (which will be very rare if you bought it when you arrived) and you only have say, 20 cents left on it and your trip will be more expensive that 4,20 Euro, you can just tap in and never tap out: officially, that's not allowed (which is more down to statistics than actually thinking about the customer) but hey, if your card expires the next day, big deal. The downside is that this prevents you from taking the train, which requires a 16 euro minimum balance to be even able to tap in. You can go to the ticket window at Schiphol to hand your card in, but I have no idea how this works exactly, how easy it is and, especially: about the surcharges they will apply: in the past, you had to file a two-page form and they withdrew something like 2,50 Euro 'administration costs' which was absolutely ridiculous considering the 'retail' price of the card at 7,50 Euro). When the card 'expires' (just an electronic setting in the chips' memory) the card will be unusable and you can refund the balance on it by sending it back to TLS, but this requires you to fill in a form where you state your bankdetails, and sending both form and card in to the company. If the card's expiration date is further back than expiration-date+1 year, you're out of luck and the balance is basically a present to TLS. When the ticket-windows will be quiet, I'll try and ask this at Schiphol ;)

I have two questions regarding the OV-chipkaart. First, how does one check how much value is left on it? And second, how does one top it up?
@aWanderlustForLife Жыл бұрын
You can do this at the same machines you buy them. Also, when you check out, you should be able to see it on the screen. But recently, it's become an option to just use contactless payment (your bank card or phone) to check in and out. So maybe that's more convenient.
@edwardjones4870 Жыл бұрын
@@aWanderlustForLife Thank you for the additional information. Transport for London used to advise visitors NOT to use contactless if their cards charged foreign exchange fees. The current website simply notes the fees but makes no recommendation. I wonder if it would be more cost effective to buy an OV-chipkaart to avoid the exchange fees. Would that in effect pay for the card? Of course, this would be depend on how long one would be in Amsterdam.
@aWanderlustForLife Жыл бұрын
That's an excellent point. And that would be a personal decision. I love collecting the transportation cards around the world so that's what I would do. But many credit cards offer no foreign transaction fees, so that would be what I'd suggest if you go this route. You'd just want tl be sure it's your default card.

@@aWanderlustForLife All my cards charge foreign transaction fees. Is there a specific train OR class of train that you recommend for carrying/rolling luggage (25” bag) between the airport and Centraal station? Some videos that I have seen showing the interior of the trains indicate that there is not enough room for a rolling suitcase at your feet nor is there overhead storage that would accommodate the 25 inch bag.
@aWanderlustForLife2 жыл бұрын
Great question. We always travel by train to get to the airport. You have a couple of options, you can take the Sprinter which has 2 stops before Centraal station or the intercity direct which goes straight to Centraal. You'll see signs that there is a need for a supplement but that is only if you take it from Schiphol to Rotterdam or vice versa. We always stay by the doors in the open area and try to stay out of the way instead of going in for a seat. It's only about 15 min and in some of those areas there are seats.

Thanks for this, very helpful. I've been watching many of your Amsterdam videos in preparation for an upcoming trip. I have a question about buying the anonymous OV Chipkaart from the yellow ticket machine. I've heard you have to "activate" the card after you buy it to select your train class in order to be able to ride. Do you know what that means and how to do that?
@aWanderlustForLife2 жыл бұрын
That's a very good question that I'm afraid I don't know the answer. Couple thoughts: 1) There are service people at the airport for NS. It's a huge area that would be hard to miss and I'm sure they can help you. 2) You could buy your train ticket via the app now (just called NS). 3) You can buy your ticket just for the train ride you are taking via the machines. We have a brand new system where you check in and out of the Amsterdam transportation (GVB company which is all the trams, metros, blue buses in Amsterdam proper) with a contactless card or your phone if you have payment on that. Or get the GVB app and get your tickets or day passes on that. You rarely need a real ticket or card anymore! I hope that helps.

i’m a year out for this i’m so sorry but i assume you can buy tickets back to schipol at the central station? our hotel is near the centre and i get anxious on different transports so as long as i can buy a one way back to schipol im fine!
@aWanderlustForLife Жыл бұрын
Absolutely! I get it. Travel is stressful! You can now use contactless payment at the gates at Central Station or even on the poles at Schiphol airport just as you would a ticket, in case that makes it easier! But don't worry, any train station will have a ticket machine and both the airport and Central Station also have customer service people (the sign will be for NS)

Hello thank you so much for your help is it crucial to tap in after buying the ticket before boarding the train downstairs? What happens if you don’t tap in and you just get on the train?
@aWanderlustForLife2 жыл бұрын
Yes, you need to tap in or else the ticket is not validated. If it's not valid, they can give you a fine.

hi, just found your video... I am wanting to come from North America with my bike, and start riding directly from the airport. Maybe a long shot... do you know if there is a bike shop/ mechanic at Schipol, who I could maybe get to assemble my bike for me ? or do you have any other suggestions ?
@aWanderlustForLife2 жыл бұрын
I don't know of anyone at the airport that could help. But you could put the box in a taxi van and go to a shop near where you are staying.
@terset99122 жыл бұрын
@@aWanderlustForLife thanks, was starting to think that was probably what most people do... another option I thought might work is if I could contact a mobile bike mechanic to meet me at the airport.

@aWanderlustForLife3 жыл бұрын
You're welcome. I don't know specifically about Discover but it really just depends. Though we are a touristy city, some places don't take credit cards at all. I believe most restaurants would, though.

Travelling from Canada. Can I use my Canadian credit card or debit card on the train ticket machines
@aWanderlustForLife Жыл бұрын
Shouldn't be a problem! I'd stick with Visa or Mastercard, though. The machines are mostly for tourists (we have transit cards) so they try to make them easy to use. Now, though, a contactless card can be used to tap in/out at the card reader and you don't need a ticket. But I know sometimes it's better to know what you are paying!

Hello I have a layover of 13 hours but is all from 9pm to 7 am I’m worry that I won’t find transportation getting back to the airport in the early hours of the mornings which it would be around 1 am or 2 am? Is the train going to the airport all night?

You can check schedules and updates on 9292.nl or the NS app. We also have TCA taxis and Uber which should be available.

Hi, thanks so much for this useful video! I want to go from Schiphol to Amsterdam RAI. I've looked through Google Maps, NS website etc. but I can't figure out which train to take to get to RAI (and not Central Station). In your video at 3.54, I can see all the final destinations. Could you be able to tell me which one would take me to RAI? Thank you so much. Hope I'm not a bother!
@aWanderlustForLife10 ай бұрын
Hi there! Where you were on the video 3:54, you'll see the keyboard on the left side, you can just type in RAI to get the right ticket. But now (after this video was published) you can check in and out with a contactless payment (card/phone/watch), so you don't need to go to the ticket machines anymore. YAY!! To know which train, you'll want to check when you get there since, with construction, things can move. Can I ask how you searched on Google Maps? I just popped it in and it shows the train you'll need. It's the train that terminates in Lelystad, so hopefully that helps. But when you arrive, you'll see the departure signs. It will have the final destination in big letters and under that, you'll see the intermediate stops. There, you'll see "RAI". It does scroll, so you might have to watch for a minute. I hope that helps!
@antarasarkar1210 ай бұрын
@@aWanderlustForLife Yes, I saw on Google Maps that it's the one that terminates at Lelystad. But on the ticket machine in the video, I didn't see any option for that. Nor did I see RAI. That's why I was confused as to how I could figure out which train to take for RAI. Thanks for letting me know that I can type in the destination on the machine. And then be able to see the intermediate stops on the sign boards. I'll also keep the contactless payment option in mind. Thank you so very much!! I really appreciate your detailed reply. As well as your videos! :)

Thanks a lot for this info! Can I buy an OV chip card using an international debit or credit card? In some places I read that you need a Dutch bank account in order to buy one.
@aWanderlustForLife2 жыл бұрын
They likely mean for a personal one, you need a Dutch bank account. Not for the blue anonymous one that visitors would buy.

Why did you get two cards to take the train? Sorry I am very new to this!
@aWanderlustForLife Жыл бұрын
I was showing the options available. You can buy the plastic cards to top up to use around the country on public transportation or you can buy a single ticket. However, there is now a new option (since this video is a few years old) that you can "tap in/out" with a contactless payment, like your phone with NFC turned on, or a contactless-enabled card and the price will be deducted from your account directly.

I have a doubt, what's the difference between the travel ticket that allows you to use all public transport and the ov chip card? which one is best to buy? I'm going on a solo trip for two days and one night and i'm kinda scared, thank you! Btw, I'm also trying to visit Zaanse Schans
@aWanderlustForLife Жыл бұрын
OV chip card is a declining balance. You add money and it deducts based on the cost of the trip. The travel ticket is one price with basically unlimited travel on the routes and services listed on the card. You can find more info in the links in the description. Don't be too scared...if in doubt, the airport and central have info desk people that can help ☺️ have a good trip!

@aWanderlustForLife Жыл бұрын
To answer you question here and on the other video, for maximum flexibility, the OV chipkaart is best. Just be sure to keep it topped up. And there is an office at Schiphol and Amsterdam Centraal Station if you need any help with it.
