This win is so oddly satisfying. There's something about the Desperate Housewives cast (save for Felicity Huffman, perhaps) that feels so smug and diva. And the Mary Louise Parker is kind of like the odd girl out, and is seemingly more down to earth, and while one of the actresses in DH thought they'd probably win, she up and takes the prize. Lovely.

Actually in season 2, they 4 did an amazing job : my two favorites were Marcia Cross (alcoholic Bree, and also that that scene when she shoots at George to make him stop singing in front of her house was phenomenal), and Eva Longoria (fighting a nun was hilarious).

What is most interesting about this is that the role of Susan Mayer on Desperate Housewives was first offered to Mary Louise Parker and the role was written with her in mind. She turned down the role and so they then offered it to Terri Hatcher. I am so glad she turned it down because we never would have seen her great work on Weeds. I am a fan of both series but Mary Louise really shined as Nancy Botwin.

I worked on a play in 1989, in which she starred when she was twenty three, Prelude to a Kiss, at a theater in Berkeley, California... the funny coincidence at the time was that Elizabeth Perkins, ( who plays the neighbor that no one likes in Weeds) was a quite famous film actress already at that time, having been in films like Big with Tom Hanks , was supposed to be the star of that play, and had other time commitments. whereas Mary Louise was quite unknown... it was noted during the play s production that they looked alike, especially when Perkins was younger, and it is noticeable during this show Weeds, that they could play sisters . The play went to Broadway , Prelude to a Kiss, and Mary Louise won a Tony award nomination, and then a couple years later, she worked on a film by the same director and writer Craig Lucas team as the play, film called Longtime Companion about the AIDS epidemic. She worked Reckless, yet on another film (based on a play ) by Craig Lucas, with Mia Farrow I always wondered where she would go after working on that play, and noted her films over the years like The Portrait of a Lady based on a Henry James novel and Bullets over Broadway, by Woody Allen... and Angels in America...
