The authorship of "Away in a Manger" is not definitely known. It was probably written in the United States in the latter part of the nineteenth century. Despite this, the first two verses have been attributed to the great German reformer Martin Luther (though it has not been found in his writings and no German version is known before the 1930s) and verse three has been attributed to John T. McFarland (though this is also doubtful).
The tune is 'Cradle Song', written by the Scottish composer William J. Kirkpatrick in 1895.
It is performed here by the Guildford Cathedral Choir.
