We tested the new Volvo XC90 AWD! Quite impressive since once again it was icy and mixed with snow all over the place! Switch it to offroad mode and the truck will send 25% of power to each wheel. But sometimes it tends to allow some wheelspin before braking the wheels without traction. The car is equipped with winter tires, there is a lot of ice under the snow and the hill is quite steep! The car could have gone up the hill first shot, but the goal is to show how the AWD reacts to a slippy situation!

Interesting comment. I drive a 2016 VOLVO up a dirt road in the Colorado Mountains and it (the Volvo) has passed many a big 4x4 pickup truck that was stuck. Sometimes I could stop to help, other times it had to be to keep the momentum up a very long and steep hill encroachment. I know that my neighbors do not understand why (the Volvo) does so well, and I say that living in Alaska for 12-years helped, but compared to a truck, the only benefit the truck has is higher clearance, however, the VOLVO has some 8" to 9" under itself! Thanks, VOLVO, still building great cars.

These are not proper winter tires, more likely M+S (all season tires). If you would put studded winter tires (Nokian Hakkapeliitta, Michelin X-Ice north etc) -> you would have smashed that small hill! I live in Finland and have 3-5 months of winter with 30-40 cm of snow, ice, slippery roads and so on: with good tire (studded or friction tires like we call in Finnish) you don't have problems.

When driving Haldex AWD like some Audi,Volkswagen,Volvo,Saab you should press on the gas a bit, not floor it, maintain decent pressure on gas for a few seconds so that the computer can transfer power to the right wheel, what you did at first was remove your foot at the first sign of slip,or floor it, the Haldex would not work that way.
@The13point18 жыл бұрын
Intrepid Milotic Oh yeah. Just like they show in the commercials.
@aryapradhanad1867 жыл бұрын
Intrepid Milotic FYI, this is not haldex this is GKN AWD system. GKN system has been used by Range Rover Evoque, The all new Audi allroad and Q5. The Volvo basically has the same AWD with these 3 cars the only difference is that the Evoque has Torque vectoring or Twinster Axle as what GKN said and the Audis has a newly designed propshaft or drive shaft with torque vectoring also, other than that it's the same. The driver should have turned the traction control and ESC off and it will go as well as the Evoque

From what I've seen in this video it's not impressive especially in the diagonal test. I got a question for you. On some or most crossovers or SUVs the lock button or option that lets you use this function up to a set speed or mph what is it locking up? Is it just 50'50 split front to back left to right or all four wheels locked ?
@CarQuestion9 жыл бұрын
+rotaxrider please note that the diagonnal test is an extreme test that 0,09% might face one day in a certain situation! for the button It's usualy 50/50 front to rear power but even some systeme dont LOCK the power transfert. back in the old days you had a limited slip diff ( mechanical ) but today cars rely more on electronics to apply braking to the slipping wheel. the volvo system is not bad! a little oversteer sometime in slippery condition, but in offroad mode it will get you out, but still is not the fastest.

+CarQuestion I guess you can say that about any AWD/4WD SYSTEM that is on a car or crossover or SUV. They should all do good on winter roads with good winter tires because most fwd cars with really good winter tires are good on winter roads but I would want a SUV or crossover to be better than a fwd when it goes off road. When I say OFF ROAD I mean a long up hill driveway in the winter or any situation more traction is needed more than fwd can offer. move gear lever over to Sport Mode/manual mode, then push forward to 3rd gear. It works well in my V60 and XC60 when the traction control is overwhelmed. Same goes for my previous Audi's with quattro. You are basically putting it in "creeper mode" to keep the revs/torque down. Volvo's used to have a dedicated Winter Mode button on the gear shift which performed this (move into 3rd gear). Try it next time you lose full traction going up slippery hills in a Haldex equipped vehicles.

in the DESC: The car is equipped with winter tire, there is a lot of ice under the snow and the hill is quite step! The car could have gone up the hill first shot, but the goal is to show how the awd react to slippy situation!

Car Question i cant say the awd reacted too well really for such an expensive vehicle.o think most suvs with snow tyres fitted would have got up the gradient.and im sure driven right the volvo wdve got up without all that sliding.as ive seen on tv topgear and other youtube clips.
