The 2021 Volvo V90 Cross Country is the outdoorsy brother of the sophisticated and stylish V90 wagon. Considering the small pool of rugged station wagons sold here in the USA, we compare it against one of the most popular: The 2020/2021 Subaru Outback Onyx XT. Is the higher cost of Volvo V90 Cross Country worth it? And how does it stack up in terms of capability versus the Subaru? As a Scandinavian..not using winter tires really triggers me. All the systems in ANY CC car is built upon using winter tires in winter conditions. And winter tires are way more important than 4wd. Theres a reason we can still see BMW sportscars etc with RWD climb up the ski mountains. Sure they struggle, but eventually they make it.

Good video, don't know if it's an american thing but in Sweden we do use winter tires during winter. The v90 XC is used in the swedish policeforce and it's a tank during winter. We use them with Nokian hakkapelitta 9 and nothing can stop it. Here it's a known fact that all seasons don't work. Keep up the good job!

I think it’s much more common to use winter tires in Europe than in US. Among my friends I know only of a single person that uses all seasons. Most people use 2 sets of tires in Poland too.

in the Pacific Northwest in Washington state where this was filmed and in Southwest British Columbia where I live it rains more than snows in the winter so most people don't bother getting winter tires since in the city it'll probably only snow couple days a year at most. but if you live somewhere where snow and ice is constant then switching to winter tires is a must

One thing to keep in mind is that (according to @tyrereviews - kzbin.info/door/EvB1bmKjPWZ3V1wSdBnXPQ) US all-season tires are NOT the same as Euro all seasons, which in the US would be described as "all weather". This means that US all season tires will perform even worse in the snow than Euro all seasons. This makes sense as at least 1/2 of the US rarely sees snow or even freezing weather....

As a swede to even attempt to go up something like this without ATLEAST nordic winter studless tires is unthinkable. Anyone regularly drivning in these conditions will have real studded winter tires and it would most likely handle it fine.

in Hungary we use 2 sets too. Winter set is used between November and March and summer set is used between March and November.

2:58 the only reason you don’t have seat warmers in the back is because you have the dual integrated child booster seats in the back. Those have the middle of the bottom cushion that folds up to make a 2 position booster. You can’t have boosters and seat warmers. If you downgrade the car because you optioned it wrong, that’s not Volvo’s fault.

The Subaru Outback Touring 2021 also has more of the Volvo's same features, such as heated steering wheel, heated seats, and ventilated seats. I wouldn't pay that much for an optioned Onyx either. Some dealerships sell fully loaded Onyx XTs for $36,000, which makes way more sense.

@@WahotsW Sure you can get a lot of gimmicks for a lot less then the Volvo but gimmicks do not equal a Premium car, you can't compare them in build quality. The Volvo is in another league compared to the Subaru.

not to mention the guy is complete bozo, he says on several occasions the conditions are similar when its damn clear they are not the same, the subaru was on fresh snow mixed with mud, while the volvo was on ice.

18:38 the way to do front camera is go into 360 mode, then click the camera circle located at the front of the car in the middle of the 360 image. You can drive with front camera up to about 10-15mph, then it shuts off.

Ryan, I am an ex Volvo AND Subaru employee and I wanted to take the time to go over this video. I have sold a few of the V90/ V90 Cross Country cars back when I was at Volvo and often, I sold them to people who needed space but did NOT want an SUV and thought that the Subaru was too "flimsy". The actual unit that you reviewed could be a European Model or a Pre-Production unit because you ARE supposed to have heated rear seats IF you have ventilated front seats, heated front seats + steering wheel. Price point, the Subaru is a NO brainer. But not everything in life is about nickels, dimes and dollars. What I do NOT like at Subaru is the somewhat shoddy reputation of the CVT as well as the VERY expensive servicing and frequent service intervals. I was running up some numbers and it cost more to maintain a Subaru while doing the same millage in a Volvo. For me, that is NOT normal! We also live in a time where price is often the only "counter" to any argument. There is no talk about the use of Boron steel, anti-submarine seats, the non toxic and hypoallergenic materials (used for those who suffer from seasonal and environmental allergies) Talk about the new optional PM 2.5 Filter, amazing for when there are forest fires or for keeping those on board safer.... The car is recyclable at 98%, paint is of high quality (unlike Subarus super thin paint), 12 year anti-rust due to the frame being galvanized at the Factory.. I could go on. This car review lacks proper understanding of a LUXURY product vs a regular product. Any one can do a review, but it would be nice to see a review from a "sales point of vu" as well ;). I am not taking a dump on the Outback, just stating the fact that this type of video showcases one aspect and leaves out a bunch more. Lastly, the Outback that you have is mounted on snow tires, which makes this a non-comparable test seeing how the Volvo is on All-Seasons from factory.

I agree with you,I own a 2019 outback with all the extras, the second one,before 4 Volvo' s. The Volvo's were very reliable cars,which isn't anymore and the price is,as what other people also mentioned, a lot more than the Subaru. You're right that you don't "see" the high quality steel etc at the Volvo,you need to know. In my opinion this comparison from this type of Volvo with the Subaru isn't the right one,it needs to be compared with the Audi A6 or Mercedes E class. Nevertheless, a Subaru outback is a very underestimated car for the price you pay. I have the idea that the Subaru's who are produced in the US are a different quality than the ones from Japan.

@@marinusmourik9494 Marinus, in all fairness, the only direct competitor is the Audi A6 Allroad. Savagegeese did a very good review and I thought that his review was aimed at that specific refined clientelle shopping for something different, capable, that could handle cargo without falling into the SUV trap...in terms of budget, again, two very different customer profile and income. In terms of reliability, I know to stay clear of any first year production model in the European brand segment, but even so, I saw a few software glitches and very few mechanical issues with the Volvo T6 engine/powertrain. Nothing that would turn me off from the brand anyways....

@@benyabasi5829 Yes i agree and the Subaru also had to ascend in much more snow and with less visibility of the road surface to pick correct line. Symmetrical AWD... that is why most of the road ice and snow recovery vehicles used in Alaska and parts of Canada are Subaru Foresters, good video though i enjoyed the comparison

Unlike common belief, conditions actually get slippier as it stops snowing, because the melting snow turns into ice. Which meant the v90 could have done this the day before. Plus no one climbs hills at two miles an hour that's just asking to get stuck

I watched him go up the icy stretch of the road and anyone who has driven in snow/icy parts knows that you don't stop if you have the momentum. Stopping and trying to regain traction to proceed forward is a good test, but if there are no obstacles, then don't stop. BTW, I have a V90 CC and I love it!

I rented a XC90 and went on a road trip. Loved it so much Its on my next list of cars to buy. The V90 is something special thought. It stands out as you wont see to many on the road.

I have taken my 2001 v70xc through the Rio Grande. Through massive mud pits. Up crazy sand dunes driving by 4wd that were stuck. And then even pulling one out. I have climbed hills in 6 inches of snow that were incredibly steep. Pass semis on highways in winter when no one else would pass them. All in luxurious comfort. With clearance to hop a curb and even adventure in the desert I am so impressed with the p2 chassis. I love my Volvo so much. At 20 years old. It still gets 20mpg city and 26 highway. I hot rod it everywhere I go. Volvo just doesn't make em like they used to anymore.

🤭 it is a bit confusing to see "winter" tests with tyres like this. In sweden I guess 98,5 percent of the cars change to proper winter tyres at the cold season. And bring on summer wheels for that season. Not all-season things.

We get it, snow tires are better. We aren’t testing snow tires though are we?? The vehicles are being tested in stock form. If you don’t like the content move along. Dude puts out great material compared to most channels and you sissy girls complain 🤷🏻‍♂️

@@mrkennya80 dude, there is no such thing as "stock tires". Just as you can't buy "stock" summer jacket, and go out in snow and complain how it's bad. Putting a wrong tires and testing a car on ICE, than comparing it to a different car on a FRESH SNOW is straight forward misleading. That test has nothing to do with the car.

We have a 2019 V90 Cross Country Ocean Race with the Polestar chip and also Hakkepeliitta R3 snow tires. The car is both unstoppable in the snow and willing to kick the back out (a little). We have rear seat heaters, but no ventilators due to the special interior. Honestly, one of the best cars I’ve ever owned - and there have been many. I know you have to test with standard tires, but anyone who would actually use the V90 in this way would also buy proper winter tires. BTW, I also had a 2012 Outback (just sold in April due to lack of use) and it was also great. That was pre-CVT and that’s the real reason I think many people don’t end up with a Subaru these days if they’re also considering a Volvo or something else a little pricier. I’d tell anyone who really likes the way this car looks to go give it a try. Not the sportiest, but certainly the most comfortable. Also, incredible gas mileage on the highway. We drove from CT to CA this summer to take our son to college and the mpg was incredible. I really can’t say enough good things about this car.

XC70 is one of my favourite cars, but despite having Volvo's for the past 20 years, I've never had one! 😫 I've had 2 XC90's and currently have a 2019 V90 CC Pro, but XC70's still turn my head 😃👍

@@alexjreeves which generation XC70 are you referring to, P80, P2, or P3? I prefer the P80, never liked the the window trim between the C and D pillar on the P2. I like the styling of the P3, but FoMoCo.

@@ivanoffw Ahhh, good question. The original 1st gen V70 XC didn't quite do it for me for some reason. I love the P2 because it looks more utilitarian and almost 'combat ready', especially with the plastic cladding around the grille 😂 But I do love the styling as you say of the P3, especially the late facelifted versions. The rear light cluster on the P3 is lovely and immediately recognisable at night on a motorway. I had a MY2014 P3 based S80 with the same interior, and with 4C adaptive chassis and really liked it. I think the XC70's look more 'off-road ready' than the V90CC, although I am loving my V90CC Pro Polestar. The one thing I don't like about the V90 so much is the highly raked tailgate. Loses too much load space in my view, although doesn't really caused me major issues so can live with it. I might just end up buying myself a late model 2016 XC70 if I see the right one - it's an itch I think I need to scratch 😂👍

Very good video! The tyres and the type really matters, here in Finland we use spike tyres or "nordic" traction tyres, much more grip. V90 CC is a really good car, and all rounder and very pleasant to drive in long distances. Safety features are great! A true winter car and the heaters etc really help and work well. In CC (diesel) the fuel powered extra heater is necessary in our conditions (-30C to -35 or -22F to -31F this winter...) and I have tested our V90 CC in quite deep snow, it was around 30 - 35 cm (10 - 15 inches) snow on a forest road and it didn´t get stuck...

I've currently got both vehicles but in process of selling the Scubie. I just love the interior of the Volvo & power of the petrol engine. Both great cars but time for a little luxury!

Looking at this off road test part from Finland: You don’t simply stop midway. You make sure the route is ok and keep going forward with low speed.

Yup he does it with all the vehicles he test. It’s a good way to see who has the best AWD system and how well they can move the power around to get out of a worse case scenario.

@@mrkennya80 if you want to do an accurate test of AWD systems that are comparable you use rollers. That is a good way, this has different conditions each time, in other words not comparable.

I only buy manual and here in the UK I'm still in the majority. This, in part, is why Subaru have lost 75% of their sales here. Turning the Outback from a true AWD estate into a pug ugly SUV didn't help either. So my 2006 Outback won't be being replaced by another Subaru.

Awesome! The last two videos have been epic! Thank you so much! Just one minor comment. Are you sure that the off-road mode didn’t disengage at some point like with the Outback? I think in Volvos it disengages at 30 mph. If it was the case it’d explain some of the difficulties the Volvo had.

To use the front camera just press camera, press 360 and then press on the front camera on the overwiew of the car. Also you should have reviewed the Stereo that the car was equipped with ;) The Bowers and Wilkins system is great with 19 speakers/1400 watts.

I was saying that same thing to myself, anybody who lives in the north knows a day or two after snowfall usually means ice.. And the fact that he was using ALL SEASONS. Like wtf do you expect it to do. Grab onto wet ice while you are continuously stopping?😂 Volvo has the best AWD system hands down.

@@TJ-uj5hf As much as I like volvo, an haldex system cannot be qualified as "best AWD system". It has a lot of other qualities however, we just need to be objective :) It's good, but it cannot be the best everywhere.

Thanks for the video. I had the V90 for a few days as a courtesy car while work was being carried out mine. I really enjoyed it and it is 2nd top of the list as my next one.

My mom has a 2012 Outback, and I have a 2008 XC70. While I've never checked out the exact weight of both vehicles, the XC70 not only takes LT tires, but it also feels a substantially heavier. All of the offroad & traction comparisons between these vehicles seems to focus on the technology side of electronics and traction control, and in most everything I've seen, the Outback fares better. Putting technology to the side though, capabilities are very similar to a lighter mini-pickup versus a heavier full size pickup, whereas a heavier truck can often "brute force" its way through something that would stop a lighter truck, while a lighter truck can often "skip through" an obstacle that will bog down the heavier truck. As consumers who've never seriously off-roaded our station wagons, we both love our cars, which are very capable in just about all conditions, very reliable, very safe, and do well with retaining their value. Compared to my silent Volvo, my mothers Subaru sounds like I'm driving a Hills Brothers coffee can. The Volvo (3.2) feels heavy, powerful, and substantial, while the Subaru (2.5) feels light, slower, and gets blown around a lot. The Subaru is comfortable, while the Volvo is the most comfortable car I've ever sat in. The Subaru costs much less and gets great MPGs, while the Volvo cost a lot more and gets good MPGs. The Subaru is nice, but I think the extra money for the Volvo is well spent.

I love my MY2020 with Denim Blue and the Amber standard leather interior (discontinued for 2021), but agree this grey is incredible and I love the 2021 20” rims seen in this video. They look gorgeous. I may be in the minority, but I loved the standard leather seats in the 2017-2020, which have a pebble texture and those triple stitching details. While cooled seats would be nice, I loved the look of the standard leather seats more and it saves a lot of money. Amber was the only color I would buy, so I was glad to buy the 2020 before they discontinued the standard leather with Amber.

Would have loved to see what the Volvo could do with winters. I have a jeep GC equipped with Hakkapeliittas and it's a beast - pulled a 1,000 lb trailer up a steep cottage road with way more snow and ice than that - but it too probably would have struggled on that test road on 3-season tires.

Just to add, great for motorway driving, I've had AMG C63's and BMW M Comp's and have say that apart from missing the shear grunt and noise, the V60 CC makes up for a most comfortable/relaxing ride which still has impressive poke across the range. That's without the Air Suspension. Very impressive all rounder

I had a 2000 Volvo S60 front wheel drive and had zero problems. I had Blizzax winter tires which handled every road challenge in the Idaho winter snows of 10 - 18 “ snowfalls. I actually tried to get stuck and even stopping on a steep road in deep snow , I was able to start going again with no problem.

Great video. I own a 2018 regular V90, no CC because I live in South Florida and I absolutely love the car. I bought it as a CPO this past November w/11k miles and got a fantastic deal. I love driving it in dynamic mode and the elevation is nice on the CC, but the regular V90 is so damn sexy. I got lucky and mine came with the Bowers and Wilkins upgrade to the sound and goodness, sometimes I just go sit in the car to read and listen under the stars. The Subaru is a nice vehicle, but the Volvo is fantastic, especially when you factor what you'd pay for other luxury vehicles. That said, I'm kinda dying to win that Audi RS6 wagon on Omaze - it's got 591 horsies!

I do that too... I live in Maine, but cannot tell you how many times i've sat out in the car, incredible comfort, sound system, seats..everything. You Know your car is insanely comfortable when you sit in it, instead of your house (under the stars ✨️). My neighbors drive by and cannot image why i am sitting there 🩶

Very good test video. Thank you for that. The only issue I have is with the tires but it's an American thing. I've been living in USA for 5 years and met 1 person who uses winter tires. And I live in Chicago where the temperature can drop 20 degrees in 2 hours and when we have snow we have 1 meter of it in a few hours. In Europe its a normal thing that everyone drives with summer tires in the summer and winter tires in the winter. In some countries even mandatory. And it is a huge difference. It like wearing boots in the snow or your fine Italian shoes you wear with the suits

But our TourX 2.0T with torque vectoring AWD averaged 30 mpg in the summer with AC on playing courier with allot of stopping and that was the worse I could do. On my commute it was 33-34 mpg and on long hwy drives it was 36 mpg. No Outback 3.6R or 2.4T can match that!

@@normt430 EPA figures are 23-30 for the Outback, 20-30 for the V90CC and 21-29 for the RegalX. They are close to each other but the Outback clearly has the edge vs the RegalX despite being much higher off the ground. The V90CC also shines given its weight, size and hp advantage.

To get the front view camera you can select it from the 360 mode. Do it with my S60 T6 R-Design all the time. You can also select the left or right camera as well.

@@sondersonics7534 Old ones were a different breed. And obviously I can’t comment on the ones from the past few years, but I don’t have a good opinion of the ones from the late 90’s - 2015. Every single one ive seen has had problems. They continue to run, but will burn oil, transmission clunks, seat gets stuck, the list never ends! And I think the lower resale value helps bolster my thinking. Maybe I’m wrong.

I had a Volvo XC40 for 2 years here in Seattle. Snowy days were so much fun. I actually remember a video of two guys testing a XC40 on raw snow raw forest and they were amazed by the little SUV. Go Volvo! The V60 and V90 Cross Country are my ideal goal. Love the style, the versatility of the vehicle not being a SUV.

The Volvo has 69 ft^3 space in the rear, not 53.9. The frame is most likely thicker, more solid and the interior slightly wider spaced for passive safety reasons.

The trail conditions look much more favorable for the Subaru: fresh snow for the Subaru versus compacted snow/(re)frozen snow for the Volvo.

Thanks for the review. I do appreciate these off road tests! Two things- this car should have the Climate Package with either heated rear seats or integrated booster cushions. Rear cross traffic alert also does include auto braking. While I love the look of these 20” wheels, they really are not ideal for snow and ice- I appreciate the real world test though.

If you think the 20" wheels are bad, then pity me - I have the 21" Polestar 7 spoke diamond cut wheels 😳 Beautiful wheels, a bit firm as not that much air in the low profile tyres, but a nightmare off-road. Already have a few scuffs on a couple of the rims 😫

@@mrdeeds83 To be honest, here in the UK we don't do much off-roading - just a bit of driving on rough tracks. And we rarely get enough snow to warrant a full set of winter tyres and wheels. If we get 2 inches we start panicking 😂. However, I might think about changing my wheels for a nice 19 inch set with all-season tyres as a decent compromise 😊

@@alexjreeves I see what happens when it snows in the UK...scheer cahos! However with recent global climate changes, I would opt for an all season snow tire. Not sure if you have those. Basically, it is a good all-season with a mountain and snow flake rating on the said tyre. Here in Quebec, snow tires are required by law from December 1st to March 15th inclusively. If you get hit or hit someone without snow tires, insurance companies and the SAAQ (provincial authority in charge of motorised vehicles). will NOT cover the person who was not on snow tires. And yes, some people do get their tyres removed on the 16th of March...🙄

I drive the 2019 model since 2 years in Sweden. Never stuck but again winter tires goes on in October so never tried the all season crap. Backseat heaters is a base model standard option (or comes with climate heater package) but can’t be combined with built in child bolsters, this is why your test car probably misses that. Obviously the diesel option is the better one in Europe, the D5 engine has massive torque. Interior build quality, very competent, well designed integrated driving experience and back seat comfort for a family of tall people was the deciding factors. Also, standard suspension is very comfortable and potent, also police cars runs on that as air suspension are a bit too sluggish in adopting. Great sound system as well, choice of B&W, H/K or standard, all quite capable. Thanks for a great review, good to see the Volvo kept up doing a good job despite the less than perfect tires. 👌🏻

You can use any camera individually. In the 360 view each available camera has a button on the screen. That's what those camera icons are. You push one of those and it activates that camera within the display, only. However, the cameras will deactivate after you reach a certain speed (I think it's somewhere between 15mph and 25mph) so as to prevent it from being a distraction (obvious). Now, I own a 2018 Volvo S90 T6 Inscription (identical drivetrain as this car, but I don't have Off-Road or Hill Descent) and I think it's important to understand the type of AWD system the Volvo family has. It's a 5th Gen Haldex system. This is a fine system, but isn't geared towards the rigors associated with off-roading. The Haldex system has a max 50/50 torque split between front/rear. There is *NO* torque vectoring between each wheel per axle. You can see this when one wheel is free spinning when he's popping 3 wheel motion on the ascent. Ideally, you'd have at least some braking force acting on the free wheel to induce more torque into the other wheel on that same axle. I'd be interested to see if it performed better in Dynamic (or Polestar mode if equipped) as I think it applies brake vectoring in that mode. The Subaru has active torque vectoring via differentials and I believe can send up to 70% total power to an individual wheel to the rear, which is pretty fantastic. Similar accomplishments are on Audi's Torsen based AWD system (they also use a Haldex system like the Volvo, but label both systems as 'Quattro', so buyer beware), Acura's SH-AWD system and Mitsubishi's S-AWC system. Given the conditions tackled by the Volvo in this video, it actually fared quite well considering the obvious limitations of the AWD system implemented on this platform. I think tire choice will play a bigger role here and that should be considered when selecting them for this car. He also mentioned that the Volvo performed similarly to the Evoque (I didn't watch that video) in one of his earlier tests. I imagine it was a very similar result as Ford and Land Rover both use Haldex systems. It really just comes down to how hardcore off-road do you want versus how comfortable do you want to feel while driving to where you're going? Are you taking fire routes through mountain passes and such? At that point it's a no-brainer and you go with the Outback. If you're a snowboarder/skier that occasionally goes camping through some *fairly* groomed trails/roads then you can get away with a Volvo (especially with proper tires). The more you lean towards Volvo, the more you sacrifice in terms of off-road capability, and the more you lean towards Subaru, the more you sacrifice in terms of creature comforts and really taking those multi-hour road trips without feeling worn out at the end of it.

I'm cross shopping the Outback and V60/90 The Outback has a lot going for it and seems like the best overall package. Plus, there are endless mods you can do, if you're into that or a few years in feel like revitalizing the car. Ride quality is absolutely amazing, the new global platform reduced NVH quite a bit, and the XT engine is a rocket for what it is. It's also a car you feel just fine putting the dog in the back. You don't lose hair with every scratch of the leather or paint. It also has a whole lot more space. My gripe with the Volvo is the price about doubles from a Touring XT, but the returns are diminished. The interior is much, much better, but it's also much, much more painful when it gets messy and loses a lot of its magic when it's not in just-detailed shape. Also, the large wheels kill the offroad experience and make new tires a bitter pill to swallow. Plus, your mod options are limited and even if you find some nice kits to slap on, few people work on them relative to the Subaru.

I recently received my 24 Outback limited (non turbo) never had a CVT in a car before but so far I have no problems with the cvt and it seems to have enough power and what a nice long distance highway cruiser. I had a Toyota Tacoma and wanted more luxury and comfort and easily got both for less than a new Tacoma also the Subaru dealer within 18 minutes. I think the closest Volvo dealer may be in Canada.

I love Subaru, but the V60 and V90 are more refined and finished products than the Outback. The Crosstrek is a more honest option than the Outback for this generation, which has become more utilitarian than fun. I recommend the garage sections of Savagegeese's reviews to better understand the differences in materials, design, and price with the Volvos.

18:42 When in 360-camera mode, you just press the camera icon you want to use (front, rear, left or right). Neat trick I found! If you fold the mirrors in, those cameras shut off in 360 mode. BUT! if you click one of the side cams and THEN fold the mirrors, that camera will stay on. Nice for backing into tight spaces.

The Outback ticks all the boxes. It is really comfortable and spacious, fantastic road and great off-road capabilities, the 4x4 is by far the best. Low centre of gravity, reliable. On the highway it is so elegant and stable, absolutely fantastic. It does feel utilitarian but that makes it so great as you can relax and use the damn thing instead of being afraid that you will get a bit of dirt inside. I love my outback, the best car I ever had. Never felt so connected to the car and the road. Subaru ❤️

Impressive for it to get so far on the slippery terrain. But this shows us also that "All-Seasons are No-Seasons". Put on proper winter tires when it's snowing or about to people!

The Regal TourX at about US$27K is an even much better deal. The 295 lb-ft of torque with torque vectoring AWD is icing on the cake.

@@GreeMoMee I had a 2018 TourX but haven't been in the new Outback. The old 3.6R in top trim for +$40K at the autoshow was not worth it for the interior and older infotainment and abysmal fuel economy. I don't commute on logging roads snow never stopped us on Michelin Alpins. But the fuel economy could reach into the 40's mpg and I would regularly see 33-34 mpg on 12 mile commute with 4 miles highway. @@GreeMoMee I love the car-like handling of a wagon. Where thr Subaru Outback handles more like a SUV than a Legacy. We are looking at a XC90 T8 next fall. Will be comparing to Lincoln Aviator GT plug-in then too as thry both have about 20 miles on battery.

Every car I've ever owned was a Volvo, but since I bought my Outback last year I don't think I'll go back. I had a '94 940, a 2000 V70 XC, and a 2004 XC70. I kept the XC70 until last year, when I replaced it with a 2015 Outback. The XC70 became so expensive to maintain that I couldn't justify keeping it anymore, as much as I loved it. In my last year of ownership, the fans stopped working, the AWD stopped working, the steering rack needed replacement, the AC went, and finally I had a caliper seize (which should have been the cheapest of all the problems to fix). It turned out the reason the caliper seized was because the brake lines had somehow been filled with dirt and grime which caused a problem in the AWD system and the car refused to release it. I decided that was it and went shopping around the next day for a newer XC70 or V60. My local dealer had a used 2016 V60 with 90,000km on it for 20k that was advertised as CPO. When I went to sign the papers, the salesman told me there was no warranty. I told him that wasn't the deal, nor what was advertised. The car literally had a rear plate on it that "Certified by Volvo." He went to the manager and the manager said too bad, no warranty. They had a used XC60, but I didn't want an SUV so I went down the street to the VW dealer and test drove a 2017 Alltrack. It was alright, but it felt pretty rough and the seats (especially in the back) felt like cardboard. Everything inside just felt cheap to me and was indistinguishable from a Sportwagen, and it was stupidly almost 10k more than the Volvo. I then went to the Subaru dealer and they had a used 2015 Outback Limited 2.5i with tech package. It was the same price as the V60 and had pretty much the same kilometers on it and a warranty that the dealership didn't take away at the last second. I took it for a spin and knew as soon as I sat in it that I'd buy it. A year in and I have no complaints, just praise. It's a beautiful car and has an unmatched AWD system. I love Volvos, so I get the fanboys who want their AWD to beat Subaru's, but I don't think it's possible. I have yet to see a single video anywhere that shows Volvo having better AWD than Subaru, but I see all kinds going the other way. There's a reason for that. Other than status, I can't see a reason why anyone would choose a Volvo anymore over an Outback. Volvos are nice, but they aren't $20,000 more nice.

I have had an XC70 for the last 5 years, it's been great, no real issues other than one oil line that leaked, couple of knock sensors and some worn suspension bits that needed to be replaced at 130k miles - not surprising, it's a heavy car. I have a battery drain (goes flat after a week of sitting) I need to chase down, but that's the only real problem. I avoided similar Subarus when I bought the Volvo as they were known for having headgasket issues at 120k and I didn't want to deal with repair bills that cost 1/2 the value of the car.... I suspect newer ones are better about this, but I don't think there is enough data to really tell.

I used to think like you....then my I decided to give it a try with my 2012 Nissan Sentra (the worst of CVTS) yet my Sentra is still kicking and driving with 122k miles, so then I decided to get a 2018 Subaru Outback, 72k miles later It’s still driving like new and it’s been thru some great off-road adventures....now I’m wondering what all the CVT fuss was about...ain’t nothing really wrong with it... sure I prefer a regular automatic/manual on a sports car but these cars ain’t sport cars....

@@subielife4life yeah I got a 2018 also. 54,000 miles. I heard at 60k you want to take it for a transmission flush. I change oil and OEM filter. Document everything

@@lowlifeangler yup I definitely document everything, I also like to change my own fluids whenever possible including the cvt transmission fluid. I'm gonna look into doing it for my outback soon, not sure if the dealer changed it before since I bought mine used from them, theres a history of a 60k service done at the dealer on the carfax report but not sure if that includes the cvt fluid....

During winter, or in wintry conditions all cars should be equipped with winter tyres, no question. Why gives a dealer a car out for testing without proper tyres? I do not know 🤷🏻‍♂️ I drive a Volvo, and I hope I will drive one in the future as well. There are better cars on the market for sure, but their proven safety, reliability, comfort, and overall image just bought me.

@@rjuez00 I accept your opinion, however my car has done more than 135k miles and had no major issues at all. In terms of safety, Volvo gathers data from real life crashes as well and uses that to continously improve their products. For example in 2012 when IIHS started to perform small overlap crashes, Mercedes C-class, Lexus IS got poor, BMW 3-series marginal, Volvo S60 good rating.

I live in the NE USA, way up by Canadia, and here, everyone has TWO sets of rims with tires: summer/touring, and rugged snows. I have studded snow tires, as I drive on a lot of dirt roads, which in the winter, are basically sheets of ice. Changing between summer and winter tires is about as hard as changing four flat tires, jack up a corner, swap the wheel and continue. I'll bet that Volvo would have no problems if you had actual snow tires on it. Where I live, 'all-season' are really just summer-only tires.

An outback XT is probably a better value proposition. It would be good to see the test on the same day for both vehicles with same winter tires. Those wheels and tires look very large with little profile. Not the greatest combo for the trail you are on. Thanks for the video! The volvo is sharp looking car and definately a sleek design.

You can get two Outbacks for the price of that Volvo. One Onyx XT and maybe a regular 2.5 Premium.... However, most people with money who buy Volvos will not look at Subarus because they seem too common and not unique or luxurious enough. Basically, if I had the money, I would buy this Volvo for everyday driving and then a used Subaru which I would then outfit with off-road tires, lifted suspension, and other goodies 😜
