Man At Arms, you guys do a lot of recreation swords, giant swords, functional replicas and fantasy weapons. I wanna see you guys create a high-performance sword. The best sword Baltimore Knife and Sword have ever made. Top of the line steel, distal tapers, perfect centres of percussion, good edge retention (maybe differential tempering?), razor sharp (i.e. will shave you), solid construction, original engraving and art designs, good blade geometry, excellent point of balance, a protective pommel, ergonomic pommel letting you feel your edge alignment, of course the pommel construction will be on point as always, a good flex to take the strain of impact (HEMA or Kendo consultants for the feel of the blades? I dunno...), and basically make the most perfect sword you guys ever have. Call it, "At the Man's Arm," or "the Perfect Sword." I think it would be an awesome challenge, from forging to grinding, to material sourcing. EDIT: I know this is a lame thing to ask, but it seems like they respond to "a lot of similar comments" as opposed to one upvoted one. Thanks for all the thumbs, btw. So, could you guys repost this? Or a similar one? Just to help make this happen! Only if you guys want to, of course. Thanks, again! Credit Stefan Massyn

Well the real question is which sword should the perfect sword be? Longsword, Gladius, Sabre, Shamshir, Tulwar, Katana, Rapier, .....there are far to many to call one the ultimate sword in case of the overall shape. Also do you want a truster a cutter a cleaver, etc,... cause even simple medival sword can have a huge variety in there performance in different areas.

There is so much historical inaccuracy in that into it hurts. For some reason it is not letting me reply to it so I am editing this. Next Mark Dacascos makes it sound like a wood cutting axe and the Dane Axe are the same sort of tool, this is not the case. Wood axes and war axes have some key differences in there design, often around the head of the axes profile and the beard.

@rlp19988 жыл бұрын
what i think he is trying to say, is that they made the dane axe, sound like a tool for cutting wood instead of saying that it was a war axe, which is was and nothing else. He is also telling us, that the way the axe is formed, is not ideal for wood chopping, as it has a lot of mass and a long shaft which would only be in the way. Where as it would be ideal proportions for war, as there would be more range and kinetic impact in the axe, and its axe head is also profiled in the that makes is effective at cutting against flesh, leather, gamberson or regular thick layered clothes. to sum it up, they added some correct information, but did not specify exactly what the dane axe was used for. PS. if you wanna know more about weapons from the medieval periode, stretching from 500-1500 ad, please go check Skallagrim's videos.
@nickwysoczanskyj7858 жыл бұрын
I get what your saying, and you're right that a thin bladed dedicated war axe and a wood cutting axe aren't the same, but the build is a recreation of the in game weapon - it's not a historical build: it's a functional prop.

Yeah of course. You do know that vikings did other things than just raiding? There were vikings of all kinds of proffesions. I'd assume the majority of those who actually went raiding were prepared for it. I wouldn't recommend my worst enemy to fight against anyone with a woodcutting axe, it's way too top heavy since it's focused on the most possible force on a stationary target.. a chunk of wood/tree. Also battle axes were way cheaper to make than for example a sword. So i'd say the poorer warrior vikings actually used battleaxes, whilst the rich ones such as their leader used a sword. But hey, what do I know.

that two handed axe which is from this show is not actually a viking dane axe ...... dane axe's axe blade was very thin, sharp and light. The actual dane axe does not have hammer on the other side ......dane axe was not the bashing or heavy chopping weapon. Dane axe was more like sharp cutting and hooking weapon.

Nice video and great work on the axe! However, just as a note, it is commonly understood that the viking age truly ended in the 11th century when most viking communities were converted to christianity, thus making it immoral to raid and kill fellow christians. Also, the vikings managed to unite into kingdoms and unions several times, conquering most of England and settling across the baltic sea and the northern sea as a result.

Read about the Viking last stand in Sweden Christians killed everyone inside women children everyone. Christians even destroyed the majority of Viking temples. The religion was forced to extinction by Christians the same goes for Ancient Greek and Roman pagans
@Joolangawoo7 жыл бұрын
Not in Denmark. The viking king Harald Blåtand converted himself to Christianity, and over the next centuries all danish vikings were eventually christened.
@Joolangawoo7 жыл бұрын
Harald Bluetooth was king of Denmark and Norway after the death of Harald Greyckloak (He calls himself a king on the Jelling Stone). And as I wrote, the Danes weren't all Christians from one day to another. That happened way past the time Harald's death. And I don't go against the notion that they have been forced into christening. But they were never eradicated. That's my point. The danish royal bloodline goes way back to Gorm the Old, the father of Harald Bluetooth.

Mark, since it seems your Scandinavian history is a bit rusty, allow me to remind you. Vikings were not exclusively travelling to plunder, in fact, most "vikings" were craftsmen and merchants. Actually the most common weapon in most viking shield walls was the spear because they were so easy to make. Axes were also sometimes common but only some vikings actually used them regularly. Another very common weapon for vikings was the long knife or seax
@spencerday29374 жыл бұрын
It went like this; Primary weapon was the spear, secondary was the axe (sword if rich enough), and the seax was more of a tool or reserve weapon. I left the shield out for obvious reasons as it was (obviosly) not really used as a weapon.

Falcon Windblade The problem is not that it is not accurate, it is that it is not usable. there is a "practical" ratio of the axe head's length and the handle's dimension parallel to the flat of the axe; this is for axial control of the weapon. With this heavy of a head, you'd need more of a chopping axe-handle, which is wider. this would spin in your hand all the time no matter how srong you are.

Dane axes existed, although this axe isn't very realistic. The blade on the real dane axes was much thinner and the head was 600-800 grams, not like this oversized wall hanger. If you tried to use the axe from the video, it would be like using a sledgehammer, while it should be way more nimble. I mean just look at how the guy that does the horizontal strike turns completely because of the momentum haha.

For example any of the League of Legends weapons (Darius' axe, Katarina's blades) or even Genji's Katana from Overwatch. In the case of For Honor or BF1 weapons, they've been commissioned by the respective developers/publishers so I guess you could say they're selling the weapons to the company that owns the IP.

I got a reply notification talking about the knight being in full plate armor, but it's not showing up, so I can't see the whole reply. Either way, the knight is wearing a hauberk, a chainmail tunic of sorts, not plate. We're talking the 11th century here, where samurai, vikings, and knights co exist. Sure, there was plate armor in that time, but the knight is wearing chainmail. Vikings in reality wore little to no armor, and came from a land with little food and bitter cold. The knight would kill the viking easily. Samurai had horses, katana, and bows, but the knight has a polearm. The reach of the weapon would topple the horse and the samurai with it. The samurai would survive the fall, assuming he isn't pinned by the horse.The knight would have crossed the distance and killed the samurai before he recovered.
@TKBauer5238 жыл бұрын
What rock have you been living under when you think Vikings had little to no armour?? Infact they did have armour (Mail, Lamellar or Cloth and leather) and Helmets. Also "came from a land with little food and bitter cold." The Climate in Scandinavia were not just an icy thundra, Most scandinavians were farmers (Vikings aswell) and they would cultivate the land and grow their own crops. ;^)
@Warden_Vtel8 жыл бұрын
TKBauer523 11th century vikings, I said. I doubt they would have had the knowledege to make mail, and they wouldn't have been able to rob a knight to steal it. Btw, what's a "thundra"? ^ ^
@TKBauer5238 жыл бұрын
Sorry, I meant to type "tundra" (Tundra is a type of biome where the tree growth is hindered by low temperatures and short growing seasons. The vegetation is composed of dwarf shrubs, sedges and grasses, mosses, and lichens.) Taken from the Wikipedia page about Vikings: "... a wealthy Viking had a complete ensemble of a helmet, shield, mail shirt, and sword. A typical bóndi (freeman) was more likely to fight with a spear and shield, and most also carried a seax as a utility knife and side-arm. Bows were used in the opening stages of land battles and at sea, but they tended to be considered less "honourable" than a melee weapon."
