I played music for years and thought that my ear was just terrible and I'd never be able to pick things out by ear very well, and then I started singing and focusing on the feel of different intervals and my ability to play by ear dramatically improved in the course of weeks. Singing is definitely the key to hearing.

This lesson reminded me of two things. The first is a bass player from the forties and fifties named Slam Stewart. He was a monster player, and would use a bow on solo's and sing what he played. The blend of his voice with the bass is unparalleled by any other musician I've ever heard. The second thing is when you were playing and singing the ascending sixths it reminded me of a Dizzy Gillespie song named Swing Low Sweet Chariot". He and another guy were using it to sing the word "Heaven". Just hearing you do it put it right in my mind. Thanks!

Fantastic advice, Scott. It helps to have these skills. If some listeners are skeptical, they should know that it helps with mapping out harmonies as you may not know which one is yours until you get to rehearsal or even the gig! Learn them all and you're better off. As a fill-in bassist sometimes, I'll do the maj3 in one band and the 5th in another, for example.

Hi, I'm a guitarist and a novice bass player. I've been following the tutorials and found tons of things to work with from the ones I've seen so far. Just need the time. I attended a workshop (Martin Taylor) where this was a part of the programme. It was turned around a bit from the way you presented it in this video. In our case, we sang simple combinations, 2+ notes in a scale, then had to repeat them (wherever) on the instrument. The ultimate goal being to take the time delta between your mind and your fingers to be (next to) zero. The thing is, Bensen isn't singing along with his playing. He is playing along with what he's thinking. (Which is what is what your doing when improvising)

So, how'd it go?
@GeorgeSPAMTindle9 жыл бұрын
I am going to send a link to this to several former band members (6-string guitarists of course!) who thought that I was crazy when I sang like that to try and get them to play what I wanted. When you give up trying to explain it, then pick up a 6-string and show them how it's done, they burst into tears! Bass guitar is of course easier than their instrument because it has fewer strings, a bit like the way a motorcycle, with its two wheels, is easier to ride than a car is to drive with its four wheels. A uni-cycle must be a piece of cake then, if you apply 6-string players' logic.

@Notes from the Key of Synchronicity I play most recording by ear. Usually I don't really play all the notes I sorta just mess around and see what other licks I can come up with. But lately that seems to help too just sorta playing every note for note helps tremendously. I just need to practice much more.

@@rjr.6263, Gabriel Barzen and the others are joking about using your ear to play bass guitar by brushing the strings against your ear to pluck them, or fretting by pushing your ear against a string against the fretboard. They're not talking about the process of listening. (:

Hi Scott - thanks for great lesson. I am planning to really follow through on this exercise, as this 'ear - brain - muscle' coordination has always been a big 'show stopping' issue for me. I am trying to get my head around a practice schedule and how to 'assess' if I am getting it right. For example start for a week with C scale and the 3rds stepping (just for a bit of variation). Would be great if you could give a few thoughts how re. the level of effort (time spent) and how to check if it's going right (for example recording the voice and check with a tuner??? ). Thanks, Joost

Hi Scott, I'm surprise I'm belgian who speak french...I hear you at 2.00 singing the notes like we do in french, italian,etc...: "do,ré,mi,fa sol la si do..." I was thinking you do so "C,D,E,F,G,..." Can you explain a little more if it's so and, by the way, do you know how the germans do (with their special H in place of B) All your lessons are geat as usually... Best regards
@Sickz66610 жыл бұрын
"Do, ré. mi, fa, sol, la, si (or ti), do" is not exclusive to french and Italian, although it has its origins there. It is called solfege, and is used to teach musicians about pitch and sight singing, using different sounds for different intervals derived from the root of the key. I don't think it has much to do with language, rather the school of music you are studying. It is for instance very common for classical musicians to know/practice solfege, while players from an afro-style background might just sing the pitches without giving them a particular name.

This is (I think) doing thirds, fourths, etc, based on the scale tones - so you would be doing major and minor thirds, fourths, etc as you go up the scale. Is there any benefit for going up, for instance, in all major thirds or all minor thirds? Or is this just another mode? I suppose as long as you're matching the finger positions to the sounds it doesn't really matter?
