This channel is amazing and needs to blow all of the other boring ham radio channels out of the water in subscribers. Great video, amazing production value!

Ah dude that’s so kind of you to say. I do this because I just like messing about making videos and I love ham radio but I get bored watching the same content retold by different people. I’m still learning this stuff - but honestly you have made me smile. Thanks for the comment 👍

Just FYI, I tested a Quansheng UV-K5/K6 for harmonics. The first harmonic (some people call it the 2nd, but in musical terms, it's the first, an octave above, i.e., twice the frequency of the fundamental) is 49db below the fundamental. I can hear myself on that harmonic about 50 yards away. Do I care? No. Someone Yokel on KZbin scolded me for not caring, saying that spurious emissions can trigger a blasting cap. Well, I already make it a habit to stay away from any blasting caps, so I'm safe.
@robustreviews3 ай бұрын
You're absolutely right to say that it's the first harmonic! Harmonics aren't as distressing as some have built channels around... If you actually *read* the FCC and ETSI test procedures for testing HT harmonics you'll find they should be tested at 3 metres distance in to a log-periodic. This conductive testing of plugging directly in to a spectrum analyser is nonsense (and I think some of these channel owners *are* aware of this) but they can't test it the 'proper way' and as we know there is one channel owner of a big ham channel who seems to positively fetishise sorting 'clean radios' from 'dirty radios.' It's been very much as case of "monkey see, monkey do" with harmonics testing on KZbin, somebody found the harmonics test on a TinySA and did it, then everybody copied, and now perfectly compliant radios are being 'written off' due to a faulty test method. What's more distressing that I have read ARRL members have been offering a conductive test at meetings and writing off radios - that's fuckerance and I would have something to say if the 'experts' haven't bothered to read the test procedures either! The antenna HAS to be considered in testing as it's what's being radiated that matters, not what's being conducted - essentially by plugging in to a spectrum analyser you're removing half of the filter network then complaining that it doesn't comply. The FCC doesn't require conductive testing of HTs so I'm not sure why KZbinrs do? And good tip on blasting caps, there are some helmets out there who probably go outside to fart judging by the way they talk on the internet about ham matters :)

@@robustreviews Much appreciated. Myself and friends have bought the Zastone UV008, but because of lack of translations, it's been uphill to get full use from these. Handed my to a fellow Ham friend, who is very familiar with the more established brands. He was baffled by the settings, as I am. Terrible pity. I would buy more of them if only had more confidence in how to use them.

Where/what programming software did you use for the UV008? Love the video btw, great content, keep it up!
@robustreviews3 ай бұрын
Hi Patrick I’m mobile at the moment - I should have clarified it’s the model specific software from Zastone’s website. It’s a CI-7000 IC inside the unit so no third party support anywhere else at the moment. The program is simple called “UV008 Programming Software” but I’m mobile at the moment so can’t send a link. Hope that helps mate and thank you for the positive comment - massively appreciated 👌

@@robustreviews Thank you for the prompt reply! I think I found it, but I would love a link if you have it... Also, is there any chance you will create more content on the UV008? Programming basics, how-to walkthroughs, etc? It is a very interesting radio, and so far most of the content I see for it is in Russian or Chinese lol
@robustreviews3 ай бұрын
I'm going to make a general DMR guide to get people on air as many of the ones that I've found spend too long dwelling on the technical description and not what the settings actually "do". I won't insult people by taking 10 minutes to explain _Digital Mobile Radio_ is _digital_ too like some videos :P There's lots more coming about this one so keep an eye out :)

Hi, I bought the Radion but I'm looking for a decent CPS (programming software), because what I've downloaded from Zastone so far is rubbish compared to TYT or Baofeng CPS. Is there a software somewhere where you can fully utilize/program the good radio? Greetings Mark
@robustreviews3 ай бұрын
Hi Mark, the UV008 software is pretty good - I’ve not noticed any particular issues, it’s very much the same as the OpenGD77 CPS or the Baofeng 1701. I suspect these are all similar software that’s being modified to each radio. The software has all the features I can imagine you might need, including the commercial stuff like emergency channels, remote monitoring etc. I’ll be putting up a more detailed test and review Monday - if there’s something you’d like me to check please do let me know. Thanks for the comment. Andy 👍

Does it implement repeater roaming?
@robustreviews4 ай бұрын
Hi @NatesRadomVideo - no, I do not believe so - it's something I've checked for as it's not something I generally use. I do have a fleet of MotoTRBOs that can do it but in full disclosure it's not something I've ever tried on those either. I'll take a look and report back, but assume no. Good question though, and I'll make sure to touch on it in Part II so thanks for the suggestion. Thanks for the comment, Andy :)

Good to know it’s useful, whereabouts are you in the world just so that I can cover it?
@WR3ND4 ай бұрын
If you could make a channel bank to scan between and stop on when squelch is broken, couldn't this in effect function as repeater roaming?
@NatesRandomVideo4 ай бұрын
@@WR3ND No, the roaming feature on DMR is different, designed for continuously linked repeaters, and was first done by Motorola who defends their patent claim against it with US companies... but laregely ignores Chinese implementations of it in the copy-cat/stolen-code radios like these. It monitors RSSI of multiple repeaters that have DMR beacons activated and switches freq automatically inside of a single "Channel" in the rig -- no need for a whole bank for our 20+ repeater network here. You want the statewide group? Switch to "Channel 1" and the rig will find the strongest repeater automatically... and continue to do so throughout a drive, switching as needed. Only works on linked full-time and properly configured DMR repeaters. (The original feature was MotoTRBO specific but has "leaked" by way of the Chinese rigs into much much cheaper radios.)
