I've been looking at a bunch of different designs for drill press tables and this is by far the best one I've seen. Much more complicated and detailed than I need now but why not go all out and grow into it. I'll be getting that plans! I really like the dust collection addition. Thanks!👊

I just finished making line of these today. Nice design. Maybe the best drill press table on KZbin. It took several hours to make, but it works fine after a few small tweaks. Caution: tolerances are very important so be careful when cutting dados and slots! The two drawers ( another good idea) have back stops, but nothing to allow the drawers to travel with the top mechanism while sliding it backwards. I fixed that by placing 2 mm high brads in front that hold the drawers in place and makes it easy to lift the drawer bottoms up and over them when you need access to the drawer contents. The table saw-like fence, anchored on the right side, is an ideal way to align it quickly on the top. Thanks James for a design job well done.

It's a great looking addition a drill press, James. I will be buying the plans shortly. Not having seen the plans yet, I only have the video to go by. It looks like you have placed the removable insert centered on the table when the table is centered. I would like to suggest that you consider placing the insert off center, both in the X and the Y axis. That is the way that I've done it on my current table. That way, when the insert is holed in one spot, you can pop it out and spin it 4 times. Each time, the "center" is a new place in the insert.

I really like the drawers. Where else would one want one's drill bits???? I'm recovering my third garage from chaos and making it into a serviceable shop. I have a drill press, but it's very basic and it needs some cleaning up and it NEEDS a nice table - this one's definitely a candidate.

James, this is an excellent idea. I think you can improve it further: Make a slot for a template on the X-axis and a slot for a template on the Y-axis. Drill holes in the templates and insert a dowel as a stop. This makes your table even more accurate than the pen-mark method. I sure this addition would be great for 'production runs'... Oh, I just saw a video on Woodsmith - they use a round insert, so they can keep rotating it, flip it over and rotate it, until both surfaces are completely destroyed.

I have been trolling videos looking for inspiration and yours hit the spot for me however I have added the t fence to the table you had in the other version as I had a spare bandsaw fence setup gathering dust and now it looks the goods can't wait to use it for more accurate drilling instead of the freelance I have been doing up to now I have radial arm press and can draw dust through the middle of all the tables and will add over the fence flexible hose too Keep on keeping on

Looks pretty good. But I am wondering about alignment issues with the table/fence. For example if the table/fence is slightly skewed and you were drilling a row of holes, the holes on one end of the workpiece would end up being closer (or farther) from the fence. This table/fence alignment would need to be checked each time before drilling a row of holes.

Very nice design with great versatility , but as I've purused the internet I see so many making the same design flaw on their fences, that being that they are too tall ! A tall fence makes it difficult and often impossible to drill close to an edge or a narrow board or other item . My fence is only about a 1/2 inch tall and when I need a tall fence I have an attachment that I can fasten on top of it to accomdate such need . I'm simply going to have to post my first video on you tube here someday soon !
@Realism914 жыл бұрын
With a low fence you can also use ruler stops for hinge boring machines, like a flip stop but no flipping push it from the front and it's out of the way push it from the side and it stops at the measurement. I've not seen anyone make them on KZbin yet or found anyone use them, I use them they're great.

An improvement on your design is to let drawers follow the movements so they always is easy to access. Or maybe they did and I missed to see that detail. An other idea that might be handy is put rulers on x and y so zero on both will line up in upper left corner on bit you place in jig. Hope you understood as my English is not perfect.
@DougSleeter5 жыл бұрын
Love this design. How do you deal with the vertical adjustment on the drill press when loosening the adjustment also lets the table rotate around the main cylinder? If I move it up and down, the left-right adjustments will all have to be re-calibrated? Trying to think it all through, but maybe someone has already figured it out. For example, if I have a project that requires two different drill bit sizes, and I want the left-right measurements to be fixed (ie. the same for both bit sizes), I don't see how I would be able to keep the left-right constant when I readjust the heights after changing bit sizes...
@whoDatBeDare5 жыл бұрын
I was wondering this myself. I thought that having a vertical crank would solve this but it doesn't. Well on the one I had years ago and the one in my price range I looked at last week. As soon as I loosen the lock collar I loose the calibration. And the table gets wobbly. And have to use the previous hole as a guide.

It is not possible. The mechanism on the drill press won't allow for it. You have to get your height set first, then align the side to side movement, and lock it in place.

I've ordered your plans and I am about to build the x-y sliding table. What bothers me however is the fact that if you move your table away from the removable center-piece, you're drilling into your precious drill table. Or am I missing something here? Please advice, thank you in advance.

Put down a scrap beneath your work piece to protect the table. It's the nature of an X-Y movement.

Seems like you could get the stick on measuring tape and add that to the front and the side instead of - or in addition to - the masking tape method mentioned for multiple hole patterns.
@StumpyNubs8 жыл бұрын
I thought of that, but then you would always have to start the table in a certain position so that the cursors lined up with the zeros. And then, what if the tape ran right to left, but you wanted to go in the other direction? It would have been a hassle, in my opinion for this particular table. I do use stick-on tapes on other jigs, though.
