The fishing methods and gear used to catch fish are a determinant of sustainability, as they can affect marine life and habitats. In the last 50 years, fishing technology has come a long way, increasing the ability of ships to locate and catch fish. In this time, progress has also been made to reduce the environmental impact of fishing, but there is still room for further improvement and research and development are ongoing. Purse seines are large vertical floating nets (made of monofilament or plastic) that boats use to encircle schools of fish that they have identified in fish search sonar. Each network can be up to a mile long. Once the fish are in the net, the base is attached, creating a 'bag'. This method catches large volumes of fish. It is also used to capture live tuna to grow in pens (called 'ranching').
