As a developer at Sensible we managed for the most part to escape the ST to Amiga coding route. Phew! It's so refreshing seeing new stuff coming out that takes advantage of the Amiga hardware - and what superb hardware it is too! Great Video as always mate!

Wow, MVG... thank you ever so much for reviewing my games and the boxes, I'm so pleased you like them! As usual a fantastic video and of course your technical decision points about the Amiga are absolutely spot on. I'm considering doing a shooter next or Hyper Sports which is one of my favourite arcade sports games that I remember back in the day. Stay well and I hope you and your family have a great xmas and new year!

Excellent job on the games, professional quality across the board! I'm curious though, as I'm assuming that Rygar includes all of its hidden items throughout, how did you go about determining where those were? Did you have to parse through the original source code?

I never really had access to Amigas growing up, but I remember the one time I got to use them. I saw one in a computer store that was running Lemmings and I was blown away by the graphics and even more so by the sound. I was used to MS-DOS PCs (and PCs without sound cards) and this was so far above and beyond anything I had experienced.

It's really pleasing to see what these machines were capable of, especially the OCS machines, not necessarily that much weaker but the color depth could make ports a challenge. Apparently the whole "ported to a weaker system, then to another micro" hampered the MSX too, with several ports from the *Spectrum* of all things.

Amiga had a few really good arcade conversions. Toki, Super Off Road ("can you feel it angels?"), Pang, New Zealand Story, Rodland & Rainbow Islands. All of them quality ports. Silkworm was one of the few games that actually improved on Amiga, upping the resolution from 256x240 to 320x200 made it feel so much better than the original. If you never played the arcade, try it in MAME, you will recoil in horror and appreciate the extra horizontal resolution.

Software houses (especially Ocean) would code for the weaker platform, then port the game over. Having optimised Amiga conversions would have been more expensive as they would either need to develop Amiga and atari St versions in parallel, or take additional time to downgrade the Amiga version to meet the atari St hardware. Both options would have had an impact on the release date. Also there weren't many coders able to work with Amiga custom chips back then.

Whilst I would love to use a physical Amiga (the A1200 was my favourite!) would the UAE be a realstic place to start coding Assembler again ?? Not just arcade conversions, but any games based on licensing of any kind including movies, conversions from other platforms, etc. One reason was the crazy short development times the companies gave the coders. This drove away some of the good coders from such companies so they could work on the projects they liked and take the time they needed to get the results they wanted. It was the same on the 8-bit platforms.
