Like it! Thanks! When I was in high school metal shop we were taught to keep our files chalked. A stick of chalk rubbed into the file surface keeps your file from loading up with debris, and keeps your file feeling nice and sharp. Works good for any shaped file.

Back when hand saws were in common use they made several different vices far better than that one. I have several of them. I still just put my saw on my tailgate , mark my starting tooth with a sharpie and use my electric sharpener powered off a lawn mower battery. Takes about 5 minutes. The dreamed may be ok but the ones made for sharpening Chain saws have a plate that shows the proper 30° angle. Beats that dreamed all to hell.

We keep our fire pit burning every minute we’re open (closed Sunday and Monday). It’s only a couple of minutes off the both interstates. 70 and 75 in Dayton!! I like the fact that the clamp is deep enough so when you place the bar in it, you don't have to play around so the chain teeth don't touch the bottom. For the black clamp, you have to play around and adjust, and the screw clap isn't very good.

Hi Chris and guys, actually this one surprised me. Loggers and firewood cutters in New Zealand have been using something similar for years, the end looks like a small log dog with a small bar vice attached that you hammer into a log or stump to sharpen in the field 🤷👍 it seems lighter than the one you showed, that one looks heavy😆 but i guess if you're happy with a tailgate vice then you're happy 😂 GNI

Good luck on this smart tool! I love the "Made in America" build quality! I'm sure you will sell them. I also appreciate the Dremel sharpening advice as I've been considering switching to a rotary tool over the files. I'm tired of my files dulling after only a few uses and constantly ordering new ones.. also the Dremel seems easier and faster and with a sharpening stone more effective, but wasn't sure if I was just going to waste more time and money switching it up. Your testimony tells me my assumptions are correct. Oh,... and it was painful watching you run that chain on the cement, but I think it it might have been a good way to take down your rakers anyway... Haha

I like the vise, Dremel with the battery pack is ok (everyone has different needs), but please use a proper depth gauge. Your saw will cut much better. It's worth the less than ten bucks to have your rakers correct.
@InTheWoodyard
@InTheWoodyard 10 ай бұрын
I do have a depth gauge and I used to use it but after sharpening thousands of times I know when my rakers are to high when I cut and I can feel the if the chain needs work. Like when the chain starts to get dull and needs a touch up, I can feel it.

Started out with a 4inch bench vise bolted to the tailgate of the woods truck,Tried a stump vice for a bit but it continually pulled out of the stump so eventually modded it by cutting the spikes off and welded a piece of flat metal and bolted it to a piece of wood serviceable but not nearly as nice looking as Berts design.

I'm wondering how many times can you sharpen the chain with a dremel tool before the teeth are gone? I usually sharp the chain by hand cca 5-7 times before I get it sharpened by a machine (max 3 machine sharpening...it takes off a lot of material)

Mention that the file for the rakers doesn’t have teeth on the sides, some people won’t know that.

You can use a file with teeth on side you just need to be careful not to hit the tooth. Mine that I use has teeth on side and havent had any issues.

You need an adjustable bracket to mount a loose chain on to sharpen when you have a back pocket full of chains to sharpen
@InTheWoodyard
@InTheWoodyard 11 ай бұрын
Maybe if I had a pocket full of chains, but that has never happened to me, I just sharpen on my saws. I have 7 saws so when one is dull or needs a rest I grab the next one and after 3-4 are dull I sharpen all of them up.

Cris when you use the Dremel are you worried about the teeth not being the same size, some may be smaller or bigger than others, does it then affect the cutting
@InTheWoodyard
@InTheWoodyard 11 ай бұрын
No not at all. Sharp and good raker depth is all that matters EXCEPT when the teeth get TOO short then they cut slower. When only 1/3 of the tooth is left I think it is time for a new one.

I use the Timberline system and will never use anything else. What you are doing is prematurely wearing your chain out. I have found the Timberline Sharpening system extends the life of your chain by a factor of 3.
@InTheWoodyard
@InTheWoodyard 10 ай бұрын
I am happy to hear that you are happy, I am with my system too, it is fast and easy and my chains last just as long as they did when I hand file sharpened them.

Wow. I want one. How can I get one? You should put the woodyard logo someplace on the vise. Did Bert make the vise? You going to the Bunyon show? Where will you be? Where is the show? If i do not have the 7/32 oregon bit can i use the 14/64 bit? Sorry. i am just being an ash. I watched the video, and i know the answers. Celebrating Bills 80th Birthday today. His pulse dropped to 40 so we are back at the VA hospital ER. No kicking or screaming about going in. He is not in A Fib so the conversion held. Yeahhhh I will not be at the show. If Bill is OK, i am taking a Wilderness First Aid Class on the 7th,, that is close to home. Have fun and safe travels.

Why did you spend $30 on a stump vice when you can get one from Oregon for less than $10 and then of course you know you could have driven that stump vice into a piece of wood and strapped that piece of wood to your tailgate and used it exactly like that.
