I remember back in 1984 I was in 9th grade. Most of the boys in the school had this knife and we felt SOOOO macho with it. My backpack had one of those, and of course, the cassette of Iron Maiden's Live After Death.

@lambert29698 жыл бұрын
Yep... I had that exact knife. 'Painted' the blade black with a sharpie. (quality job befitting the quality of the knife). The survival kit seems to have decreased in quality since the 80s, which is hard to believe. The SAS wire saw broke the first time I used it. I remember wrecking the blade trying to sharpen it with that stone. I also had the amazing hollow handled survival knife that had the sling shot and the harpoon in a stainless steel tray inside the plastic holster, better quality but still utter utter crap.

Geez you enlisted my own experiences as well, except for the last part; I saw that other survival knife with the slingshot & harpoon at a hardware store & I died in envy to own it. Never did. I mean, I never owned one, nor died at the time (go figure). Came to learn, through the cutlery I have owned, that 99% of the knifes sold as survival types are (what you said? ah yes) utter utter crap (LOL). 420 molecular steel, my ass. It's like they used leaf springs taken from defunct cars in the junkyard to make the blades. The plastic cap with the compass was big as a ball for a car's gear stick and the compass itself worked until the second time you hit a branch with the knife.

I saw those plastic handled survival knives for sale at a local flea market for $10 about a year ago and they're the worst ones and most of them have steel handles. I have one that has about a 10 inch long blade and the knife and blade are two pieces that I don't use for anything and just collect right now but I doubt if any of the hollow handle survival knives would stand up to any real or rugged use though.

HaHaHa Chris; you made me laugh out loud. I just turned 46 today and vividly remember the Rambo movies. As a 13 or 14 year old, I simply HAD TO HAVE one of these awesome knives (in case of, you know, invaders and such...) So I saved up my pocket money until I could afford one. I am South African; we didn't have access to the ease of ordering as in the USA those days, and foreign-made items were expensive. When I opened the box it came in, I had the exact reaction as you did: Why does the entire ensemble look so cheap? Is this flimsy sheath supposed to be leather? Why does the blade look so puny as compared to the movie? Why is the compass swiveling all over the fucking place (it should point to North), And then I unscrewed the back and got all this cheap-ass crap out of the back in little plastic bags? I was so disappointed! But I gave that knife the benefit of the doubt and went into the woods (well, just beyond the back-yard) and hacked at a tree limb. Chop three and the blade went flying and I have the handle in my hand. I wanted to burst into tears (the want & desire, the saving up, the ordering and the wait, the anticipation - and then BAM, reality bites so very, very hard); but I couldn't because I am a boy and I was 14. I think I grew up that day. Thanks so much for posting this. I had a real good laugh.

That is EXACTLY what happened to my knife! I had one of the ultra-cheap $4.99 ones because I couldn't afford more (hell, $4.99 was a LOT to me!) I didn't get allowance, and when I did, it was $5 a week.Well, I went to Wynn's (the "gun/ammo/everything else sporting store around here-I LIVED there!) I looked at all of the hollow handle knives-they all cost so MUCH! I asked were was the $5 one, and my dad consented grudgingly to that one. Well, mine went to pieces on the FIRST chop. I whacked an oak tree like 2 feet across-what did I think was gonna happen? Shwing-and it cuts thru it like Excalibur? Guess so. It busted off at the grip and I probably did cry, that knife was hard won. The next day I begged to go back and get another, and shockingly I got it. I didn't whack any trees with THAT one! These were so crappy that they didn't even have points-they were rounded off! Probably meant for kids-ah those were the days-no political correctness, and kids could (usually) buy knives, throwing stars, nunchucks, whatever, and if the guy at the counter gave you any guff, you just brought your mom or dad, (or whatever-a stranger would do)and had them nod approval for the purchase. Nice video, brought back memories.
@rapskallion10 жыл бұрын
MrRugercat45 Thanks for the laugh. Of course I had one too. I never did open the little bag in the handle with 3 or 4 matches, a fish hook, a couple of split shot weights, and some string or monofilament. Yeah, it was truly junk. I was afraid to use the blade. I think all I ever tried using was the saw on the back of the blade and discovered that by making it look aggressive they made the saw teeth too coarse and it was worthless as well! If you're old enough tell me if you ever bought something in a comic book ad (like X-Ray Glasses)! I guess boys are naturally gullible.
@beltfed46246 жыл бұрын
*I must have gotten the super-duper deluxe edition, because it had a cast aluminum handle, the blade got loose all the time, but it survived long enough for me to learn just how awful it was compared to my dad's Kabar from Vietnam. That blade must have been made from some real special stainless, because I never seen one of these knives that was sharp, that's why none of us kids ever got hurt. If we could've gotten BK9's back then, there would be a bunch of grown men nicknamed Stumpy or Stubs.* 😅

My dad got me this knife for my 11th birthday. These knives were popular but they came loose easy because the blade is screwed down in the hollow handle so you need a deep well socket wrench to fix them. My dad came to visit from the U.S. and he just ordered me a black version of Rambo's bowie knife from Rambo First Blood pt.2 I can't wait to get it, it's so badass, it even comes with ferro rods. Honestly, I wouldn't mind having the Survivor Knife all over again as well. But if I ever got it again, I would weld the blade to the handle after securing it tightly with a wrench, It's the only way it would last and be able to take any real abuse.

Love it. Was explaining to my kid about there knives which is how I found this. I think every kid in South Florida c. 1986 bought one of these from the local flea market . I'd like to find one out of nostalgia but they all seem to have the header "rare-collectable-vintage-etc-etc" and very optimistic price tags.

@PREPAREDMIND101 I got on of those, but the handles paint has worn off, and my handle is made of aluminum than some Titanium log chopping plastic

I still have 2 of those from when I was a kid. My father and I had a real close friend growing up and he owned a huge hardware store which was only about 1/2 mile down the road and we were always allowed to take freebies whenever we wanted because we supplied him with good deals on firewood. I had one of every knife, axe, and hatchet he carried so I ended up with both the plastic and metal handled "Rambo" survivor knives. I knew they were just basically toys even when I was a kid so I never relied on them for anything so I still have them in almost new condition.

OMG, this video is priceless! I so remember wanting this knife. The one thing I have to ask since you are the spokes person for Survivor Knives, I thought the two key rings on the handle was for the wire saw attachment. Currently I am going to complain to Kbar for not putting a bottle opener on my blade. Awesome video!

I think every kid in town got one of these cheap knifes for Christmas or birthday in the early 80s after Rambo came out. I broke the blade off of mine and my uncle got me a Buck Buckmaster survival knife for christmas of 85. I thought I was the coolest kid in town. All my buddies loved it. I still have it. Thanks uncle Bob

Yeah it's made by Ruko too. I have it. And the rings on the knife are for the hand saw.

that knife bring s back so many memories, I was a teenager in the 80s and was really into ninjas and martial arts movies, that knife was in the back of soldier of fortune and ninja magazines, when I had it as a kid I felt like such a bad ass, thank goodness I never had to rely on it! Lol , awesome memories though, excellent video review, I'm putting it on my vhs tapes along with my copy of Rambo:1st blood!

In its defense the edge doesn't go all the way down to the handle and he deliberately "split" with the unsharpend base of the edge so it could not have cut even if i was able to take the beating

lol I remember these! The key rings were for the metal wire saw that was supposed to come with them. I remember there was also a aluminum handle one but those broke really fast to.

Lol I just got a survival knife unused in the box for Christmas from my grandma. She got it at an antique store. The liquid compass is empty. And it has zero edge on it. I'd image that's what the sharpening stone is for?? Because the edge is literally as thick as a butter knife. Also my handle is metal. And my box code is P-463. Should I sharpen it or leave it alone? There can't be many left especially still in the box and the metal handle one is probably earlier. Tell me what you think? Or I could magnet it to my fridge and use it as a beer opener. And save the box.
