There isn't much story in this one, but it's a great movie to put on when you want to just chill out to some fun animation. And the parts with Madam Mim are pretty underrated.

The reason it feels more like the beginning of a larger story is because it’s based on the first novel in TH White’s Once & Future King series. If you’re interested in the rest of the story, there’s actually a really good live action movie called “Camelot” that’s loosely based on the later books in series. Merlin doesn’t feature much in it because it’s more focused on Arthur’s adulthood but it’s an entertaining picture that features a stronger plot and a villain

This is actually one of my favorite movies from childhood, I love the feel of it. The Once and Future King is also one of my favorite books, it’s just such good writing, the first part (of three parts) of that book, king Arthur’s childhood and upbringing, is what this movie was modeled from. Many of the lessons Arthur/wart learns from Merlin and the animals (in the book he also spends time as a goose and an ant) he takes into his adulthood and applies to his rule as king.

Watched this all the time as a kid, definitely have a soft spot for it. Favorite parts are the wizard's duel (IMO an underrated Disney fight) and how Pelinore and that knight in black and green stood up for Arthur in the ending.

It’s funny that even though I really enjoy this movie, it still bothers me that the Sword itself is the title of the movie yet it is barely in the movie. Fun Fact: Arthur is voiced by three different actors as the original actor was going through puberty at the time.

It's called "The wizard and the witch" in German, it also bothered me that it wasn't "the wizard and the boy" or something more obvious 😂

I'm from New Zealand, and me and my family went to Disney World in 2007, I was nine years old, and one of the core childhoods memories that I will forever remember was seeing the Sword in the Stone. I saw another kid trying to pull it, but as Thor would say, not worthy. So, I gave it a shot, and to my surprise, the sword went up. Got congratulated and given a certificate of which I still have in my memory box. Good times. Besides the voice changes of Arthur in between scenes, and the noticeable recycled animation, this is one of my favorite Disney movies I have watched, back on VHS, then DVD

This movie was in my mom's VHS collection, so I watched it a lot as a kid. It's pretty weird how it feels more like a series of TV episodes than a singular movie, but it was fun to watch nonetheless. I think that actually made me watch it more than the other Disney films, as I could easily watch it in parts if I didn't have time for a full movie.

So much nostalgia, I can't even remember the last time I saw this but I was still in single digits, this is such a great movie, to this day 30+ years later "Shun Shine! Horrible Wholesome Shun Shine!" still gets used. I've always been confused about king Arthur, in one version he pulls a sword from a stone but in another it was The Lady In The Lake, two very distinct origins until she hucked the sword IN the stone and said "your problem now", which raises way to many questions about how string she was.

This is my official "When I'm sick in the Winter months" movie. When I was in school (in the long long ago), this was a regular Sunday Afternoon movie a station would pop on cause it's short and I'd sit and watch it while sick and fell in love with it.

Sword and the Stone and Robin Hood were my favorites when I was young, so glad someone's finally reacted to it. Not as epic as other Disney films, obviously, but still charms me thoroughly. Thanks! So great to have someone enjoy it like I did. And that poor girl squirrel, that's the original catfish.

If you want some more medieval stuff from this era, but has more of an adventure to it, I'd recommend giving *The Black Cauldron* a go, if you haven't seen it already. It's been argued as one of the darkest Disney films. It also features good use of the classic UFO sounding instrument, the theremin instrument. You might recognise the sound it makes from the original Ghostbusters.

Awesome reaction as usual! It's always funny to hear the English voices of my childhood movies. I had this one and Disney Robin hood on one VHS :) The music o both is awesome, from merlin's hockedy pocked to Robin's Oodelelly! I didn't remember the sound effects tough, but I love the use of classical instruments in "the sword in the stone"

Wow, it's even more pronounced in reaction form -- Arthur was voiced by three young boys, at least one of whom experienced a voice change during production, giving the character somewhere between four and six different voices which he switches between seemingly at random. I'm mystified as to what order they recorded the lines in, since the voice changes happen several times per scene.

I saw a fun theory once that the female squirrel later went to Madam Mim and asked to be turned into a human because she was still in love with Arthur and so she became Guinevere and Mim made her fall in love with Lancelot to get back at Merlin and Arthur.

Yeah this movie doesn't so much have a story arc as it is just a sequence of unrelated events that happen one after the other. Still good though.

I know but through his adventures as animals he learned the value of brains over brawn, size or brute strength, the necessity of keeping your head when attacked, how to think outside the box, and a lot more about the world around him. He was never motivated by power, greed or arrogance, only ever by his own curiosity and courage - both of which he retained in spite of his age, birth, and lack of strength and in spite of being called 'Wart' and being mistreated and bullied and constantly told to be grateful for the pittance he had his whole life. He has an open mind and he's willing to learn new things, and always put energy into it. He's not afraid of questions, of seeing the world through a different perspective, and dreams about the impossible. That's what Merlin saw in him. That's what was encouraged throughout his adventures as a fish, a squirrel and a bird. That's why, apart from divine intervention, he deserved the sword because he wanted the sword, not the crown, and didn't even want it for himself. Even when he was frightened he went ahead with trying to pull it out. Even when it seemed stuck he went ahead without that self-doubt some may have after being called 'Wart' his whole life. And later, he did it because he had the confidence (maybe even because of Merlin's faith in him and in all he had seen and done with Merlin) to want to prove to others that he's not just a skinny orphan boy that everyone calls Wart, as well as to prove that he wasn't a liar. It was probably the second time in his life that he'd ever stood up for himself. And that's why he's a better option to be king than all the others who've ever tried to pull it, because they felt they deserved to be king because they were strong and because they felt they deserved to be king because they just wanted to be king. It's better that Arthur start his reign willing and able to ask for help when he knows that he needs it, and with good advice at his side rather than starting his reign with arrogance over having pulled the stone and believing that he deserves to be king because he wanted to be king. And in any case, I'd rather have him as king than that idiot thug Kay - "Kay the King? What a dreadful though"

As funny as the movie is, if you remember that the story of King Arthur ultimately ends up being a tragedy, parts of it really hit differently, mainly the ending of the squirrel episode and Archimedes warning Wart not to touch the sword.

I love this movie and I think Merlin is a highly underrated Disney character (as are Archemedes and Mim for that matter). My only real complaint about the movie is the ending is super abrupt. It doesn't really have a conclusion it just sort of...stops. like they ran out of time and went "and then he becomes king the end!" Beyond that I really enjoy this movie!

People dont understand this movie it dont need to be like other Disney i read by this time animation was on way out and needed a new style new format and it basically saved the Disney. Its 1 of 4 of my favorite tied movies.Aladdin, Return of Jafar, Robin Hood, and this. To me it is its own style. Sugar and Spoon is fav then Merlin then Arthure but its just a unique but badace movie, i never like musicals too much some are great, but it is its own movie. It dont need same style as others that is why its one of my 4 tied. Robin Hood has some music but its more on comedy best of all. Aladdins both 1 and 2 has plot songs and great character. So in a way is all tied together as my best movies. Disney should be more then just plot and action but education and using ur brain and just have fun. ITs why i get it then many do.
