the noot fish is also probably inspired by the slingjaw wrasse! it’s best to see in video, but basically they look like an entirely normal fish up until they spot prey, when they go SCHLOOP and their jaws/mouth shoots out to catch prey. the american paddlefish also kind of does this, but they naturally have a long nose and inside get a wide mouth. ALSO, the oarfish ( the main inspiration for the reaper leviathan ) can also do it, just not to the same level. EDIT: i finished the video and i’m SHOCKED this wasn’t mentioned: the shadow leviathan is definitely inspired by the black dragonfish as well! although really small in real life, the black dragonfish is almost as pitch black as the shadow leviathan, and they have little bioluminescent spots on their cheeks sort of like the shadow leviathan does too! they were also one of the main inspirations for the alien from the Alien moves. the inspiration is a bit more obvious when you look back on the concept art for the shadow leviathan!
