The problem I feel with these movies is oversaturation. Despicable Me: Honestly pretty okay Despicable Me 2: It's alright Despicable Me 3: Pushing it but still had some funny bits. Minions: Dumb but if you want mindless entertainment you could do a lot worse Sing: Probably the best one character wise Secret Life of Pets: Again, not bad for mindless entertainment Even Lorax and Grinch, while absolutely bastardized from the original stories still had some funny jokes and genuinely stellar animation. None of their movies have been spectacular yet but honestly? I think just seeing it everywhere is what annoys people. Because the movies they make aren't really all that bad. I'd argue something like Blue Sky (R.I.P.) had the worse track record when it came to their endless milking of Ice Age movies.

Blue Sky did have Ice Age 4 and 5, but they also had the original Ice Age trilogy, The Peanuts Movie or some decent films like Epic. They did abuse the Ice Age franchise, but when they were at their best they made way better films than anything Illumination has produced.

Knowing how overprotective Nintendo is about their IPs (look at the zelda and mario cdi games), I wouldn't be too worried. Nintendo is probably breathing down illumination's neck to make sure they get many things right. Illumination is already on thin ice as it is, because they are illumination.

Nintendo isn't protective of their IPs because they want quality. They are because they want money. They want all the money. Illumination makes TONS of money, with relatively low budgets. And no, they're not on thin ice, they're thriving and performing much better than other animation studios.

Thing is, Nintendo isn't a movie company, Their involvement in the proyect is going to ensure the movie is true to the Mario IP, but tht won't make it good. Acurracy to the source material doesn't make an adaptation good, sometimes it can work at its detriment, limiting creativty.

To answer the question in the title: no. Illumination movies aren't bad, they're mediocre, which is exactly why people hate them. A good movie can be enjoyed unironically, a bad movie can be enjoyed ironically, but a meh movie can't be enjoyed much at all. Despite none of Illumination's movies being good though(except their 1st one I'll give them that much) they are easily one of the most sucessful animation studios out there. So I'd say that their success with consistent mediocrity is why so many people, including myself, don't like Illumination.

The main reason why Illumination is bad is their movies, for the most part, all feel the same. They never try to break the animation style, in terms of creating something different visually, or telling an engaging and fun story but rather stick to the same formula as "family/kids" movies so they can make money. For me, this causes a bigger problem than ever, because quantity isn't everything. You can't depend on box office performances as an excuse for bad writing and a forgettable story. Also this doesn't give the creators to really flex their artistic abilities in terms of creating something new and original. On top of that, there's going to be a point where people are going to stop watching these movies, and watch something else with better quality, for example, The Mitchells vs The Machines. I think the best thing Illumination needs to do is a shake up, like try to break the mold of these movies and get talented people and good writers. Try something new with the animation, 'cause it is a medium, so you can express it and have fun with the animation. Finally, make the stories simple but not forgettable, avoid typical cliches or things found in other films, 'cause that can be boring and repetitive. Lastly, try to get people that matches the voices to the character and don't give it to an A-list celebrity, 'cause that's a clear sign that you only doing it for the box office. So yeah, that's my take on Illumination, I think they can improve they just need to try something different for a change, and if they prove it with this Super Mario Movie then good for them, thank you. Good bye.

I'm not quite sure if changing the visual style to something specifically different means better. Some certain movies and series are preferred as wanting to keep the same style but also to evolve, you know what I mean? "Being more original" doesn't always mean being better, assuming there is already a love for certain styles. Though as for the story, I can maybe understand. If it's really repetitive and feels too cliche to the point that it's just becoming more boring in general then I think they should come up with something good and fresh for it to keep it going naturally. Though seeings some of these movies as a series don't look like 'bad' movies but not super great either. Though I don't remember if I saw all of them yet so I can't fully form much of an opinion about them so far.

And I also like how unique their worlds are, say what you will about them but when they lean into really cartoony worlds the creativity at the company shines. The gadgets of Despicable Me, the world of The Lorax, the machinations of The Grinch….I like that stuff. You won’t see that anywhere else.

Despicable me: a genuinely touching movie that is a classic is most of our hearts, probably because of being a good movie and us seeing it at a young age. Despicable me 2: a very forgettable and predictable spy "thriller" that is the definition of boring, but still toreable with an amazing music number with "Happy" being the only memorable thing about it. Despicable me 3: one of my personal least favorite movies, having 60% filler, which is terribly surprising considering its length. The villain is unlikable, along with most scenes being forgettable, or downright awful. Minions: Hot take, I actually liked the concept of the first act, (I feel there was a lot of missed potential, rather than an outright peice of crap.) I can tolerate the rest of the movie, with that 66.7% being boring, but at least toreable, mindless garbage. Minions isn't a quality movie, its just somthing you put on to either keep the kids entertained, or you have nothing better to do (also a hot take: I think minions is better than despicable me 3.)

But I’m still worried knowing it’s behind illumination. I get it was because Nintendo’s new multimedia push with universal studios includes exclusive movie rights, but universal pictures also owns Dreamworks which has a far higher reputation and still has animated movies under their name. Dreamworks has 2 movies this year though (The Bad Guys and the new Puss and Boots sequel) and the Mario movie is the second illumination film of the year, so it makes a bit of sense.

Yeah I’m on the fence when it comes to Illumination. I do agree none of their movies after Despicable Me are as good, but I did enjoy the more down to earth atmosphere Secret Life of Pets and Sing brought forth (whenever there were moments like that in said films, lol). I think that if they were to home in more on making distinct character designs for each movie and remember what made most jokes in DM1 land, they’ll get better. I wait patiently for the Mario movie, and wonder what happened to Minions 2, since the trailer was actually promising and didn’t give away too much.

Honestly I can tolerate some of illuminations movies Despicable me 1,2 and 3(not minions) where they do go more into villains and where villains can also have hearts like gru(and also learn more of his family like dru) and I do dig that. Sing(sing 2 isn’t out yet so I got no opinion yet) mainly focuse on peoples(in this case the animals) struggles and use there singing talent and dancing to make it to what there made for. The only Illumination movies I genuinely think in MY OPINION are good ( I say a movie is good if I rewatch them multiple times and relate with the characters ): Sing ( and Sing 2 that show was incredible and I love the characters a lot, including the new characters qoq ), Despicable Me 1 and 2, and somewhat Minions. Only cause of Scarlet Overkill who I wish was the main focus in her own movie and some jokes were hilarious to me. I find their other movies okay and bad at best. But yeah, they have their moments where they make me laugh. Hopefully this new Mario movie will be okay or have more good moments than bad. I am not looking forward to the cast’s performances. I’m only excited for Jack Black and Keegan who are perfect for their roles.

The thing about the illuminations animation style is that if there’s one word to describe it it would be *marketable* Like choose any random background or tertiary character in any illumination movie, that character would make much better merchandise than any important Pixar or dream works character Which is why I wasn’t a huge fan of their visuals So I was worried about how they’ll animated the mario movie because of that until I realised that there is already LOTS of mario merchandise and they pretty dope ngl. So yeah I’m looking forward to see how the movie will look. But whether it’s going to be good however… that’s a different story in itself

By animation wise, they're the weakest, BUT I really love some of their movies so much! I'll name my Top 5 5. Despicable Me 3 4. Despicable Me 4 3. Despicable Me 2 2. Mario Movie 1. Despicable Me Overall, they have their hit and missed. I mean, not every studio is perfect.

Wait, I started to notice a pattern when watching there movies….. The lorax (2012) the onceler say the line “playing the donkey kongs” In the secret Life of pets, there’s a turtle in the sewers that makes video game sounds when it gets hit by Max and Duke! In Sing, there’s a gorilla named mario. In despicable me 3, balthazar says the line it’s on like donkey kong. Heck even in their first feature film, vector is playing a game that is on the wii! And you know what game gets played on the wii. Heck there note that the minions, there mascots, are normally seen in overalls and the name starts with…. M! Oh no…….. Has it been in the work for that long?

Personally, my favorite movie from this studio is Despicable Me 2. The only movie I don't rly like that much is Despicable Me 3...it just wasn't the same. All the others (except for Hop cause I haven't seen it) were pretty good.
