Niki Lauda did indeed get back in the car after just 6 weeks after the accident, his wounds had not fully healed, (the crash and fire in the movie was not exaggerated, actually looks worse in real life) he had to do the lung treatment while awake. Very dramatic season. Lauda won 2 more World titles in 1977 and 1984 retired a 3 time Champion after having half his face burned off and that is an incredible achievement. Even beating one of the future greats of the sport Alain Prost by half a point in the same car not by being quicker, but by outsmarting him and being more consistent and Alain Prost is one of the most intelligent drivers in the sports history so that was no easy task. James Hunt did make the big balls comment in real life and that 1976 season was the only time he was a contender for the title winning by 1 point of course as the movie showed. A playboy personality that liked his drink and his women, very charismatic and was commentator that didn't hold back before he died, he was very blunt calling drivers out when they would talk a load of nonsense in his eyes.

So glad you watched this. One if the best sports rivalries ever. And I loved Lauda’s comments at the end. The reason this movie worked wasn’t the cars it was the 2 men and their rivalry. Nikki died just a few short years ago and we miss him in the paddock every race.

James Hunt beating the reporter up was one of the best scenes in the movie. It showed how much Hunt respected Lauda despite them being rivals. As a follow up to this movie, and in case you're interested, you can watch the KZbin video with the title "Grosjean's Insane Fireball Crash". I think your subscribers would love to watch your reaction to it. You can also watch "Formula 1, explained for Rookies" and "Formula 1 Cars, Explained for Rookies (with Max Verstappen)" both by Cleo Abram, also on KZbin. Personally, I'd love to watch your reaction to all three videos. The six-wheeled race car is a Tyrell P34. It's the only six-wheeled car to race in Formula 1.

..the beating of the reporter by James was a great scene. It gave the film a certain, typical feeling of satisfaction. It gave the movie that certain typical feeling of satisfaction that I don't think you would have gotten if they had stayed with the real events, as they did for most of the movie. Because in reality it was Nikki Lauda himself who beat up the reporter, and not James.

While I know that they're actually friends IRL but I've always interpreted that scene as James taking out his own guilt rather than defending Nicki. Don't know why.

Of course it's based on a true story. Niki Lauda was considered an Austrian hero back then. After his racing career he went into aviation, founded two international airline companies and bought several others. Apart from his business he remained faithful to F1 and acted as a volunteer co-commentator and analyst for the TV broadcasts of the racings. Trivia: Daniel Brühl spent several weeks in Austria with Niki Lauda (six years before Lauda's death by the way) to study his behaviour and especially his Viennese accent, which to imitate is quite a challenge for a person from middle Germany. I'm from Vienna myself, and I have to say he did a really good job. 🙂

If it was 1973 it would have been Cevert. Hemut Koinigg died 1974 on the same track. But the accident they show clearly matches the death of Helmut Koinigg. Lower Barrier breaks and the upper Barrier decapitates the driver. Cervert rolled over and his car ended up inverted on the barrier. The Barrier broke and sliced the car in two and the driver into pieces- It was so bad that another driver reported blood hitting his helmet.

The Six-wheeled Tyrrell P34 was a real F1 car! It was thought up as a way to reduce drag produced by a large front wheel, but using a smaller wheel meant it has a smaller contact patch, hence the addition of the 2nd pair behind it... It ran in the 1976 abd 1977 season, only won during the 1976 Swedish Grand Prix at Anderstorp... it was abandoned as Goodyear stopped developing the smaller front tyres and it's handling became worse and worse because of several modifications over the course of the 2 years it ran...

Even as late as 1995, I was told that my driver's Nomex suit would only last about 110sec in a big fire. Lucky for me, I was only an amateur racing a VW GTI, car only went about 115-120. Never put that car off the road, only accident I had was in a Mazda 323 a buddy of mine put together in his garage (he wanted me to "test" it, since I had a racing license and he didn't yet). Lower balljoint sheared, hit the rail drivers' left. Half 'endo' (end-over-end) and three rolls. No fire. But 40yrs later..my neck sounds like a stick rowing around in a bucket of rocks when I turn my head! 😆 I love my sport, even though I never was good enough to go professional - but yeah. Even in the 'modern' era (more safety), it can F you up. I was a teenager when the stuff in the film happened. Not much coverage of F1 in the US back then. Results of races on shortwave radio, pictures in the 'car magazines' three months later. Was horrified to hear of the incident, Lauda was my hero when he got back in a car. Other guys had that classic poster of Ms. Fawcett on the wall, next to a poster of a Lambo Countach. My Farrah was next to a poster of Niki at Monaco. The reason I love this film so much? Never thought I'd see this story told. Among my SCCA community, there's a rumor that Ron Howard was walking by one of his fave scriptwriters' offices, and the guy was talking to another F1 fan about the '76 season. "Wait..that's a movie!!" and Howard gave it the "Apollo 13" treatment because the story fascinated him so much. The cars are only that slow because it's practical effects instead of CGI. The damn things are worth millions now, and no one wants to take them to the limit. "Shout out" to other older F1 fans.."James Hunt bites girls' legs!!" 🤣

I would like to clarify what you said near the end about the Las Vegas GP 2023. Yes there were a number of things that went wrong and yes a lot of people were left upset about it. However, the actual race itself went relatively good. The "first race that ended in 2 minuets" that you mentioned wasn't a race at all, it was the free practice session a few days before the actual race. They fixed the issue soon afterwards. Also the "banner blocking people's view" were there to block out anyone who tried to watch the race from the outside for free as the current race organizers are very stingy people and the event cost more than a fortune. However, on the race day itself, everything went fine and produced some fun racing to watch. Hope this clears things up!

The scoring at the time was 9,6,4,3,2,1. Hunt placing third is the bare minimum with Lauda dropping, so if Niki had stuck it out and played safely to place behind James he could have won unless James came first and Niki 3rd or lower. Try Driven 2001, for a racing movie with Stallone.

Trivia for "Rush," both for James and anybody else interested in knowing (never saw it, but always wanted to): - Released in 2013; directed by Ron Howard; written by Peter Morgan. - Daniel Brühl received Golden Globe, SAG Award, and BAFTA (British version of the Oscars) nominations for his performance as Niki Lauda, but was seen as a snub for the Oscars that year when he wasn't nominated. At the BAFTAs, it would win the award for editing. - One goof that is in the film - AUS is the abbreviation for Australia, not Austria, where Lauda was from. It's AUT for Austria, based on the word "Autriche," which is the French equivalent. - Daniel Brühl and the real Niki Lauda became friends after making the movie, and Lauda even flew Brühl in his own helicopter to a Grand Prix race in Brazil. - While James Hunt and Niki Lauda were rivals on the track, they weren't as antagonistic towards each other in real life. In fact, they shared an apartment together at one point. - Ron Howard and fellow director Paul Greengrass were working on films at the start of 2013, and then decided to switch projects. Howard ended up directing "Rush," and Greengrass took over the original project Howard was working on...which ended up being "Captain Phillips." - Daniel Brühl and Alexandra Maria Lara (who played Lauda's wife) both did their own dubs in the German-language version of the film. - The spot where Lauda has his crash is said to be the most dangerous part of its specific track. Because it's on the left side of the track, it became known as the "Lauda Left" section. - The Watkins Glen crash was actually two incidents combined together. - Russell Crowe (Maximus in Gladiator) was supposed to do a cameo as Hollywood actor Richard Burton. James Hunt's wife Suzy had an affair with Burton, and left Hunt for Burton in 1976. The cameo would have featured a scene going into more detail about that.

Which came first, NASCAR or F1, depends on if you mesn the organization/series or the TYPE of racing. NASCAR actually predates Formula One as a series by two years. However Formula One descends from the European Grand Prix and American Championship Cars of the 1900s and 1910s while NASCAR derived from stock car racing that began in the 1920s.
