The most disturbing thing about this series is how well and accurately they portray the children in distress from what they are subjected to, meaning they know what they are doing.

the more of these i watch, the more hopeful i get that the animators are secretly anti-JW and are putting in subconscious messages into their animated shorts. They literally depict the life of a JW child as miserable in almost every video I've seen, with the thing that makes it all okay being the love of jehovah edit: the "learning to drive a car" metaphor/joke only backs up my theory because he is CLEARLY shown to be too small (aka too young) to learn how to drive a car, therefore implying that he is ALSO too small/young to be getting baptized or becoming an unbaptized publisher and spreading the message of the religion before he fully understands it. The only thing is that he then acts all sad that he is too young so that the propaganda can continue, but the point still stands

I think they show the children in distress because they want to *normalize* the distress. If the kids think it's normal to be scared and distressed, they won't question why they're scared and distressed all the time.

Same. I just dragged my little ones along with me because I had no babysitter. People at the doors loved them. In that way, I hate to admit it, but the kids acted as the delectable bait to hook the homesteader. The kids, stuffed into suits and frilly dresses, one on a stroller, sometimes fighting each other, sometimes crying-oh my! Let’s get out the cookies and Bibles! I am so ashamed! I’d rather they be atheists than ever repeat that horrible WT “Truth” crap. 😮

I was raised in an atheist family but became friends with a boy who was a JW. He was about the kindest person I had even met in my childhood, he was really a great person. But he did not believe the things he was being taught and he was afraid his parents would find out. Because of how deep into the beliefs they were, he knew they most likely would’ve kicked him out of the house or smth if he was caught “not believing.” I hope he is doing okay.

Miscommunication leads to complication. Jehovah has principles and values that are from love. Parents that would do that are not manifesting love, nor any value that Jehovah is, also the child has a hypothesis, did that child ever speak to the parents regarding how they felt. It is not anyone's right to force a deciding soul to into decisions, Jehovah's word is sharper than a two edged sword so all a parent needs to do is lead by example, that's it!

I remember it well, Growing up as the only JW kid in a small rural school. Going straight to school and straight home, stress ulcers in grade school, self isolation, and generally hating life. It was awesome. One thing it did teach me was that most "worldly" people (teachers, parents and even school kids) will do everything they can when they see a young kid in a f*cked up situation. So maybe it was worth it to see the general goodness of humanity.

I was 1 of 3 Jehovah's witness children in my school. The other 2 were both in my year. We were allowed to sit out of school assembly because our school made us sing Church Of England hymns. But only one of us would sit out every day (brother Benjamin) while me and Brother Richard would sit in and happily sing the hymns like normal kids, much to Brother Benjamins disgust. 😂 Both Richard and Ben are now elders but I left the Watch Tower Society decades agos. (I still worship Jehovah with all my heart but I have no respect for the organisation).

You’re the only one that had enough intuition to get out of that organization! Your insight served you well. Because it is, in fact, a “satanic organization“. “For such men are false apostles, deceitful workers, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. No wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. Therefore it is not surprising if his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness.”

I honestly knew nothing about this religion until now, only that it dissallowed some holiday celebrations. Looking back now, I had a close friend in primary school who was a JW, then said she 'left the religion' I grade six. All I could think was: 'oh boy! Lets do secret santa to celebrate your first Christmas!' ...Now I'm looking back at that with a lot of contemplation 😶 but regardless, I still see her sometimes and we're friends. She's such a tiny, happy ball of energy so I guess I never questioned why she'd want to leave her religion. Now that I've heard the horror stories, I'm glad she left as soon as she did. Side note: Although she was the only JW in the year group, she wasn't the only one isolated when we had activities she couldn't join in on. I believe we had three Muslim students (one being a person in the friend group) so I kinda envied them when they didn't have to rehearse Christmas carols every year. It's funny how your brain processes things as a kid, isn't it? How you don't pick up on students being isolated from the group- because of their parents choices- as a bad thing.

I think the sparlok toy thing could be explained without breaking the continuity. I think the mom was aware of it, but she probably forgot about it for years. Which does happen. So when she saw Caleb with the toy, she probably remembered what it was and decided to try pretend to be interested in it just enough and then tell him that it’s bad. Arguably, it makes it so much worse because it’s much more subtle than immediately scolding Caleb for even bringing the “evil” toy into the house in the first place.

5:38 Funny story, this is the Jehovah's witness rule that started my journey to atheism somewhere around the ages 9-10. I thought long and hard about why God would care about me giving or receiving birthday gifts and I came up with 3 possible answers: 1) God doesn't actually care about that kind of stuff, it's just some stuff adults made up. 2) God doesn't exist so I don't have to follow that rule. 3) God DOES exist but I would never follow a God who cares so much about such meaningless things.

This reminds me of a story my mom told me once. Apparently, when she was a kid, there would be people (who sound like JWs) that would go to her house (my grandma’s house) and try to get her family to convert to their religion. Of course, my grandma (her mom) would just start teaching them about Jesus (from Classic Christianity). It’s kind of a funny story but it’s also sad what JWs are forced into doing for a deceptive organization

I am currently 15 years old, I'm not baptized nor a publisher, I'm currently suffering from family expectations, one of my family members told me if I wanted to be a non-baptized publisher, when I told them 'I don't feel ready' they got serious and left, when we met again they told me how disappointed he was with me, and how sad I'm making Jehovah. I just can't take this anymore, my family members keep insisting for me to get baptized like my cousins . I also am facing with problems on my sexual orientation, I remembered I was eating with my family and I was thinking about some girl in my class, she was really funny. And I remember one of my aunts teased me that if I was thinking about a guy, and I got a embarrassed (allegedly red faced) and one of my aunts joined in and said 'I'm glad you are thinking about a boy and not a girl' and I just felt so awkward. I'm just hoping that soon when I get my own place to stay I'll leave, I just cannot stand this pressure anymore..

I'm so sorry. I was a never-baptized queer kid who was raised around it on my mother's side while my father's family is some other christain denomination, here. My once very worldly, very educated, very successful, very LGBT-friendly mom leaned into it aggressively after my father died and tried to pull me in with her. I was a little younger than you at the time so the switch was really a shock to the system (lol). Their disappointment with you not being ready is so hypocritical. Unless it's changed in the past 20 years, JWs always criticized other sects' practice of baptizing babies and children withouth their consent and stressed the importance of making sure the baptism candidate is sure that it's something they fully understand and desire. My own bible study 'teacher,' I discovered later on, had been talking about how baffled she was that I hadn't gotten baptized after 2 years of regular (see: arm-twisted. Like you, I also zoned out and often thought about my ♂️♀️ crushes at the time so it was a pretty big waste of time). The homophobia was (is) very damaging and it seems like they go out of their way to make some random disparaging comment about queer people in conversations that have nothing to do about gender/orientation. My mother would get weirdly nasty whenever I would talk about my bosses at the time after she found out they were a lesbian couple. I got sick of her say shit unprovoked and finally gathered the courage to ask her why when they'd been nothing but kind to me. That set off a conversation that ended up with me cowering on the stairs and her looming over me demanding to know why I was defending them and asking if there was anything I needed to tell her about myself. I was so terrified by it that even the thought of trying to date anyone was something I wouldn't entertain for many years... I admire zoomers/alpha because you guys seem to recognize and *loudly* callout status quo bullshit early on, but if you haven't already, I hope you realize being queer doesn't make you bad or some anomaly unworthy of love. And please know that you don't owe your family any explanations; I've still never officially had that talk with my immediate family and don't plan to. I didn't put my foot down until I turned 24 and I'm still dealing with the damage in my 30s. While I absolutely hope you'll get away much sooner than that, please make sure you're financially independent of your family. I'm guessing your family doesn't support the concept of sending their kid away to college like mine did (they never flat out told me no, but they were passive aggressively discouraging indifferent ways). If you want to go the college route and you haven't already started, I would suggest that you consider taking some post secondary classes to count towards prereqs so that you'll be that much closer to your degree. I only did spent years at community college, but my AAS landed me a very in-demand healthcare job that supports me and my pets comfortably. School also gives you access to guidance counselors, various resources, and clubs for LGBT people if you're not getting that support right now. I know you didn't solicit me and I totally didn't intend to write a novella just now, but I HATE hearing about people, especially ones already dealing with the crap that normally comes during this part of your formative years, go through the same unneccessarily soul-crushing experience. Please consider finding finding a trauma-informed therapist, if you can. It took me a while to recognize the scenarios that we dealt with do, in fact, count as traumatic and the sooner you address it, the better. I truly wish you the best and hope you're in a healthier situation, soon ❤

I'm actually a southern baptist, and I was baptized approximately 20 years ago, at the age of 10. My pastor asked me if I had accepted Jesus as my personal Lord and savior, and to explain what that meant, and explained that baptism is an act of *obedience* to God, and doesn't save you. He asked me why we get baptized (to publically proclaim our faith before God and his people), and that was the extent of the questioning before I was deemed ready for baptism.

No "Just don't waste any time, you wanna be baptized before you go to paradise, right?" or something like that. I get that family or community pressure surely play a huge role, but does Armageddon ever play a role in the lives of JW on their way to baptism? In the congregation I grew up in, they actively advised anyone AGAINST getting baptized for the reason of being afraid they'll die in Armageddon. They had talks about it. It's not good enough for Jehovah, according to them. You have to sincerely, genuinely, from the bottom of your heart and soul want to dedicate your life and soul to Jehovah and his organization. Nothing else is gonna cut it. You will perish with the rest of the "wordly" people if you don't get baptized for the "right" reason. And fear of dying in a mass genocide isn't good enough. randomly clicked on your video for some classic youtube background noise. I quickly became invested in the video and what you were saying. Im some type of atheist now while my family is catholic for some background. Throughout middle school I had a best friend. Funnily enough her name was also sofia and she was a jehovahs witness. Being young I thought her religion was stupid for not allowing her to participate in "regular" childhood experiences like holidays, but I grew to accept it with time. I often couldnt buy her gifts bc her parents were so strict. I could NEVER hang out with her outside of school bc i wasn't the same religion. she said her parents could never accept me. she was only allowed to hang out with children of the other religion. and often times i found her growing to hate the way she lived and how controlling her parents were over her social life. i was still friends with her in the beginning of high school, and we were choir mates. choir involved A LOT of holiday songs so she always was given alternate things to do. When the winter concerts rolled around, our class needed to compile all the christmas songs towards the end so she had an opportunity to step off the stage and go to her family. But oftentimes, her family wouldn't show up to watch her perform just because christmas was simply involved. i only remember them showing up when our concert was winter themed (no christmas songs). they had only watched her perform once. i felt a lot of negative emotions towards her parents for that reason. but i tried to be understanding. we had all given her(mostly her family) opportunity to depart before anything holiday related had begun. But still, they wouldnt be there. we have grown and graduated now. Watching these videos helps me realize just how much she went through.

Is it just me who finds it weird to call an involved member a "publisher"? Maybe I'm to Catholic to get it, but it sounds like an editorial business thing and not a religious one.

Being asked if his friends are Jehovah's friends I noticed they showed Caleb with his parents and an old man. I guess their congregation doesn't have any kids so Calebs friend is this old man. What the hell did what was being said and the corresponding video clip have to do with each other? It didnt show Caleb surrounded by JW kids.

There's another one where Sophia is sad she doesn't have any friends her age and dad tells her "you don't need any, you have the congregation." My dad did pretty much the same thing to me. I went to my ten year high school reunion going around apologizing to everybody for being such a dick.

Why do people get baptized? Along with what you mentioned the possibility of getting disfellowshipped and shunned is downplayed. Disfellowshipping is mentioned as someone who would reject God, which no one studying could like imagine doing, or wanting to lead a horrible depraved life. They also say if you do anything bad, you just need to be repentant and you will be fine. No mention of 3 men grilling you in a room possibly asking a lot of far too intimate questions. So of course a bible student will just assume it will never happen to them, only wicked, immoral, depraved sickos get DFd and they obviously deserve it. Then, often in a few years, they find out the real truth. Hanging with a DFd person and thats it? You can be Dfd as well. Informed consent does not play a role before or even after baptism.

OMG I REMEMBER SOME THESE, PARTIALLY MY FAMILY AREN'T WITNESSES ANYMORE BUT I REMEMBER SEEING THESE WHEN I WAS SIX, I'M SO GLAD MY FAMILY AREN'T WITNESSES ANYMORE, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR COVERING THIS! I'm also an ex witness myself and we sang a lot in the kingdom hall, I'm not sure if it was like that for you too but it was like that for me when I was younger, I think my brain blocks out my memories of being a witness a lot of times but I remember some things.

When I was growing up, we only had tv when we could afford batteries for it since we lived in a house without electricity, so I was hungry for any readinf material. I read every Watchtower pamphlet left with us. I took them in as fiction like every other book I consumed at that age just with more dramatic illustrations.

I'm not a JW, but I am a Christian, and though the idea of baptism is one not all Christian churches believe in (some do infant baptisms as well), our church believes that a child should NOT be baptized until the age of 12 or older so the child can have some time to learn about the Bible and what their beliefs are/may be. I'm grateful that this is what my church believes as I (who is still confused about what I may believe) would have been baptized at the age of 7 would have been baptized at that age, I'm grateful i wasn't.

I was baptized Catholic before my memory even starts. I am agnostic, but I have Catholic friends and none of them give a fuck that I am no longer Catholic. Sure maybe Catholics baptize their kids way too early for them to consent to it, but it's rarely socially destructive, at least in the US, to leave the church.

As a baptised Calvinist, I can safely say to you that here in Europe nobody gives a damn if you don't follow the path of the church growing up, even if you aren't baptised. It might be different in overly religious families or in small communities where religion is the main cohesive force, so you are kind of stuck doing what everybody else around you is doing, but generally speaking nobody gives a damn. On a hindsight though, my boss has tries to subtly convert me into Catholicism a few times and occasionally brings up me being baptised a Calvinist but it's more like a joke if anything, since I've outspokenly distanced myself from Calvinism several times already

That makes me think: This “become Jehovah’s friend” series as a whole feels like if someone watched a couple episodes of Moral Orel, specifically season 1 episodes, and didn’t pick up on the sarcasm and exaggeration, thought that was legit what all Christians believed, and made a series based on that.

I may not be a JW but I was raised in a Pentecostal church and we had very similar beliefs. My parents didn’t like me being around “worldly people” (or non-Christians) and there was a lot of guilt tripping and fear mongering in the sermons. This channel feels like such a safe place 💕

17:07 hi! catholic raised here. this fr like, catholic baptism doesn't mean shit to the person who is getting baptised (as in their spiritual journey) it is more of parents and god parents as it is a promise to raise the kid christian. even first communion (at about 10 years old) isn't a pledge, it just enables you to take full part in the mass. you as an individual confirm being christian at confirmation (at about 15 years old) and choose your second or third name, for which it takes 2 years of active preparation. for example I never did confirmation as I never was quite sure how I feel about it. and that is okay, no one shunned me even in my conservative part of family for that. no one cares tbh, cuz after all it is supposed to be an honest decision when you are sure and you can always take part in it when you're ready. - everything is from my experience of living in a catholic 90% majority society

This video explained a lot about a toxic past friend of mine. I’m Muslim and went to a school in a predominantly Muslim area. (I live in America but I live in a very diverse area.) I wasn’t super religious and neither were my parents, we follow the Quran but are apart of a secular minority. This ex friend of mine was Jehovah’s witnesses and he’d constantly drill me on my faith. I was usually never the one to bring it up, but he’d always find a way to try to imply that “my god” was weaker than “his god”. Even when I explained that Allah was not a separate entity but was just the Arabic word for god he’d ignore me. He’d often “jokingly” refer to me as a terroist, drill me for not believing in Jesus (Muslims do believe in Jesus by the way, and I explained this to him multiple times.) he was weirdly pushy on the topic of faith but I’d usually look past it. Now I understand why. JW really is a cult like setting and encourages casually racism and bigotry.

As a JW myself of some 40 yrs, I have never known a JW kid to be asking to become a "publisher" and chafing at the bit as they say to "go out" in the ministry. I know for my own kids it was the LAST thing they would have asked - in fact- surprise surprise they NEVER asked so I never forced the issue. Usually JW kids they very begrudgingly do as their parents dictate. That I have seen many times. They would rather just be kids and play with their friends. But no, the JW Ministry of Truth says that parents need to drag their kids out every week , rain or shine, and place literature. Dont get involved in non-productive activities they would say which means dont spend too much time on non-JW activities like studying JW books, pre reading, pre study and preparing for all meetings and field service - these are good wholesome activities. However, things like playing competitive sport or having friends OUTSIDE the congregation (very bad) , or even pursuing a career are bad. They will lead you astray. The propaganda in these cartoons is palpable. Also that father person with that phoney hispanic accent drives me loopy.

Damn as a person raised Catholic, I always thought that JW kids were lucky that they didn’t have to get baptized before they could remember anything and that their baptism meant something more important than just a tradition in the church but this is scary. At least the infant baptism in the catholic faith isn’t a lifelong commitment, it’s more for the parents to prove they are dedicated in raising their kid catholic. The JW baptism sounds like a starting step in initiation and a permanent decision in how they will live their life
