Our Story:
We are five years into a seven year effort of transforming 20 acres of "Piney
Grove" in Northwest Florida into our dream homestead/mini farm to be filled
with animals and joy. We plan to have a variety of miniature critters on our
pastures, raise free-range chickens, grow fish in our pond, garden
organically, plant fruit and nut trees, and harvest wild game. Our goal is
to escape the stresses of corporate life and embrace all that country living
has to offer as we enter the next chapter of our lives. Follow along on our
journey!

This relies a great deal on the condition of the gravel. If it is wet, you can imagine how it hangs up in the box. Also, temperature will affect it. If it is partially frozen or is a different temp than the box, you can diesel down the bix lining before loading and that will help to keep it from hanging up. Any driver knows that.

@@ke6gwfwhen you have a wetter load and or a bit sticky or lumpy you need to open the chains a tad more and drive a little faster to compensate. The main problem of the first guy was he put the deck up to quick causing the material to bunch up and come out the way it does. With wet loads there is even more care needed to progressively lift your deck. He could have opened his chains a tad more would have helped also.

@@bush600r2 and if he didn't know that this was a wetter and stickier load, and he assumed that it was the same dry stuff that he had been hauling all day and would spread just like the other truck, he would not know to set his chains differently, and if he HAD set his chains differently, and it had been the dry stuff, he would have spread way too thick.

Two different materials. But two different needs to. That much out like the first one is probably for filling a large area right there and will be spread around. The controlled one is when your basically dropping it down a length of roadway that’s already prepped and can just be rolled right after.

I watched an old timer at a friend's house. He had a log that he dropped in the dump body right it the middle, he opened the gate and started driving. The log kept the stone from coming out in the middle of the driveway where it wasn't needed. This was a 1/4 mile plus long driveway, no raking needed. I never saw that done before or since.

All of that skipping spots could’ve been eliminated if he had raised his bed much higher in the beginning. If you see a truck with a long rope on the release lever, chances are the driver knows how to spread rock. If he has a short rope or no rope at all have a backhoe handy.

If he had anticipated that curve to the right and hung a little tighter toward it he would’ve took the rock over to the edge where it is needed. If anything rock works his way back out of a curve instead of over into a curve. I did this job for 31 years with a single axle.

The difference is not the driver. Truck having more difficulty had a dented floor not allowing slippery release. The truck spreading smoothly had a much smoother slippery floor, less dented. Also dryer and more aggregate makes for smooth spread. Driver not at fault.

Yes the 1st one was terrible and the second one was pretty good but both of them had gravel pouring over the top of the tail gate which means he's lifting up the tub to quick. To get it right and down to a fine art it needs to be smooth and progressive, with a smooth consistent spread and you shouldn't have one spec of stone sitting on the top of your tail gate when your finished if you have done it right.

If you watch carefully, both beds are at about the same angle, but one load clumps up and doesn't flow, while the other flows smoothly. This indicates to me that one load is wetter, higher clay content, higher Fines percentage, etc than the other, and it's not just a driver skill issue, though it's easy to ridicule the driver who got the short straw and got loaded from the sticky side of the quarry pile as a bad driver. And even if it somehow WAS all the driver's fault, I promise you that the first few times that the second guy did this didn't look as pretty as this video, it takes years of practice to get that good, and insulting the driver who hasn't had that much practice is just rude and pointless. I spent years driving dump truck, and very rarely ever was called to spread it, so I never had the chance to get good at this, not because I was bad, but because I had no practice.
