I wish I did not sell my 4 banger Ranger. 25 MPG is not that bad. Neither was the 300,000 miles on it. But if I had to tow something under 6000lbs I used the Crown Vic. Yes the people did not like me pulling a trailer with the Ranger at 55 MPH. I used to use the Toyota FJ 60 but somebody really wanted it (stolen). Oh and also they did not like me doing 55 MPH. Sorry it was geared for 55MPH In the summer the FJ was in your way. In the winter your go faster was in my way. If I needed a pickup I rented it or a box truck. Hints: Must have Real ID to fly? Do not fly with more than $1000 in cash. Do not carry cash to pay for gas cross country or you may end getting it taken by law enforcement. Why? Because you may be doing something illegal. Good luck getting it back. Gibbs rules # 39, 36 & #3

I think that the truck market is way over priced. I can't afford to drive a small car or a truck. Government is into everything today. You said that you can't get a truck with a radio and air conditioning. I can say this I think it's corporate greed . Your truck looks great . Stuff that we all buy. The government knows what you're buying. You maybe able to grow your own foods. It's sad because the automotive is pricing them self out of business. Peoples just can't afford them. That me to.

@@black75powder I know how to work on newer vehicles and use odb2 but it’s all unnecessary and vehicles are too dependent on computers. When they break down people waiting for a tow truck and by time they get their vehicle to wherever to get it worked on or home but for most to a shop by time it’s fixed could be days, weeks, months nowadays depending on parts available. While I could break down same time right beside them and with what I carry in every vehicle I own I can bandaid mine to get home and then fix it before they even get theirs towed to the shop. I’ve never been left stranded on side of the road with old school stuff but I sure as hell have been in newer stuff cause you just can’t make them run like you can old stuff.

A couple other issues with new trucks: 1. They're going with turbocharged 4 and 6 cylinder engines. The engines are over-stressed, and the turbo system adds more things to go wrong. I wouldn't expect them to be as durable as a naturally-aspirated V8. 2. New vehicles totally trash personal privacy. A whole lot of data is collected and shared with 3rd parties, including insurance companies.

I have a 2018 GMC with the AFM, it currently has 53,700 ish miles on it. I like the truck but it has a lot of quirkiness to it, when climbing hills it feels like the engine argues with the transmission about dropping a gear and the switching from 4 to 8 cylinders when pressing on the throttle just right it makes a feel and sound as though a clutch was slipping, the best way I can describe it, . I'm thinking about taking it to a performance shop to go into the computer to deactivate the AFM and change the shifting parameters to drop a gear a bit sooner. I live in the Northeast.

Couldn't agree with you more! I had a 5.4L 2004 F150 that I bought new. It was a great truck. When I decided to get a new one in 2021, I searched high and low for a new V8 powered F150. Couldn't find one. All had twin turbo V6s. While these engines might be trouble free for a few years - like you - I keep my vehicles for a long time. I have been in the reliability business for many years and one thing I know: the faster a piece of equipment rotates the less reliable it will be and lubrication has to be flawless. Turbos can turn as fast as 100,000 rpm. Using your same logic, I ended up with a new 2021 Toyota Tundra with the 5.7L engine. Waiting till 2022 was out of the question because I knew that Toyota was also going to the twin turbo V6s in 2022. I'm older than you and very likely this Tundra will be the last vehicle that I own. Government has no business or authority to dictate to auto makers what or how to build vehicles. Small turbo engines will not perform as well as a V8 or V6, turbos are pressurizing a small engine to make it produce more power at the expense of the engine, turb lag and the owner. A turbo says upfront the engine is too small. GM is putting a small 4 cylinder in the new Acadia and Traverse, 5-to-6-thousand-pound vehicles. Our V6 2017 Acadia gets 34 MPG highway, a 4 cylinder will never get that nor have the power or response the V6 has. GM has just lost us as a customer.

This is also where the market is failing to use this fuel saving combination by merely overly complicating a simple task. I have a hybrid pickup truck (2012 gmc sierra) with active fuel management and I have 262,000 miles on the clock. I did experience lifter failure around the 250,000. mile mark. Make sure to change oil every 3000 miles especially is you have the 6.0 hybrid and AFM combined. The oil gets “watery” after 3000 miles and causes problems. If you change oil at 3000 you are less likely to get low oil pressure and have the dreaded collapsed lifter. I didn’t delete AFM but I have considered doing it. The hybrid setup has been great for work truck and towing duties. Also love crunching the gravel in electric mode driving in woods and desert in electric mode. Great video and sadly you’re 100% correct. I am a fleet manager we have close to 300 trucks 200 of which are three-quarter ton and bigger and our diesels and I can tell you the government has absolutely destroyed them. The half ton trucks we have are mainly Silverado and Sierra because of the great discount we get, and we don’t keep those trucks anymore past 150,000 miles because there is nearly a 100% failure rate with camshafts, lifters, seals being destroyed because of the lack of oil, and the one or two trucks that we’ve done it with and done the repairs Ran close to $7000. On the flipside with diesels back in the day we used to keep one ton diesel trucks to 300,000 miles because that’s when you typically had to do a pretty large refit on the vehicle, but now because of all the EPA garbage and DEF long-term issues we sell them now at 200,000 miles. The overall cost of operation to that 200,000 mile mark is twice what it used to be because they still break down like crazy compared to the old diesels. What do I drive? Note that I drive it like an adult, stay ahead on maintenance, and don't abuse it but I can't see paying the asking prices for the new trucks. Regarding features, the '16 LTZ has everything and more than I need and will need in the future... carplay, sunroof, heated cooled seats, its effectively a luxury vehicle...etc. I never minded AFM as it did help out with mileage especially on long trips where, before I put a mild lift (king coilovers, UCA's, Deaver springs, etc) and 35's it would cruise down the interstate in "V4" and got decent mileage for a 6.2ltr V8... decent being a relative term. note: I still have AFM enabled and haven't melted a lifter yet. Exactly; why are these ignorant know-it -alls making unsubstantiated biased claims about the government doing the engineering and design. Thanks to the Government by the People and for the People we have high horsepower high torque fuel efficient clean burning vehicles with fuel injection, ABS, crash avoidance, crashworthiness, and post-crash survivability. NHTSA's Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards regulate how far our vehicles must travel on a gallon of fuel; this means better fuel management/mileage cleaner air for the consumer. 👍 AFM (Active Fuel Management; poor design or lack of proper maintenance; contaminated oil with dirt or debris in it could clog the lifters and cause inefficient operation and eventual failure, wrong oil used?

Watch the temperature on the 4160 & 4180 transmission in these newer Chevy & GMC trucks. There is an aftermarket kit you can install in the module on the side of the transmission that reduces the transmission temperature by allowing fluid to circulate quicker. It's basically a thermostat. I installed one on my 2017 & reduced transmission temperature by 30 degrees. I also installed the fuel management module in the OBD that did not change fuel mileage at all.

They come with a 168 thermostat for the transmission that you can change to a 148 thermostat. I did a bypass because we live in Florida and don't need the thermostat to heat up the transmission for cold weather....my transmission always ran cool.

Yuck...imagine towing at low RPM's overheating flipping between 6 ,7, 8th gears...slipping-wearing torque converter overheating. I use a 1989 GMC 5.7 liter Sierra for towing my livestock trailer and hay trailer....place gear shift in 3rd on the 700R4 and go safely towing at 160 degree F transmission (held at). I'm sticking with my old farm truck.

I saw this trend starting in 2007. I kept my 2001 Silverado in top shape since then and drive a POS during the winter. People always making me offers on it since it is what real truck users want - a V8, few computers, lots of aftermarket parts and easy to fix and maintain. After the GMT800 series it was really all down hill after that...to hell with AFM/DFM and collapsible lifters and 8/10 speed transmissions!

Good thing you avoided the new Tundra, they are all getting recalled for that new engine. I had several Toyota truck’s before and they were rock solid. I went with an f150 with the ecoboost, which ford has made very reliable over the last 15 years. Cheers

I am out on the new Tundra as well. I really like the new styling. If I were to ever pull the trigger on a new truck, it will likely be a 3/4 or 1 ton now. Now that Toyota is no longer an option, may as well go larger. Good video.

July 2020 I bought a 2020 Tundra so I could get a 5.7 V8 and avoid the turbo charged V6. Now that the main bearing are failing I am even more pleased I did.

I also bought a V8 Tundra. This was in 2021, and I can't claim I knew about the V6 turbo at the time. My wife, who owns a horse farm, said she needed 10,000 pounds of towing capacity and I didn't have to look anything up to realize I was in V8 territory. At that time, Ford, Ram, and GM could all sell you a V8. I knew about the cylinder shutoff thing but the statistics didn't lie -- the Toyota was the reliability king and none of its cylinders shut off. I asked my wife to drive it around the block and she said she didn't need to, if someone had to test drive it, let it be me. I was suitably impressed -- smooth, gobs of torque, it was even quiet with a roomy cabin. I signed the papers and then a few months after delivery we found out about the V6 turbo for the following year. I told my wife the Tundra was going to become a classic and might even appreciate in value. Nevertheless, it took time for me to get over my annoyance that I'd been the sap who paid $50,000 for a pickup. Having seen today's prices I can say I'm no longer a sap.

@@steventoby3768 I agree, and I wouldn't trade my 5.7 V8 for one of each year of the new Tundra. I like it that much and I normally only drive short trips and even in Mountainous terrain my gas mileage is between 16 and 17 MPG. Small price to pay for reliability IMO.

I agree. I have a 2014 silverado. I’ve had since it was new. I’m not sure I will buy another new one as they have gotten out of hand price wise. Mine is a six cylinder but drops down to a 4 cylinder. I would really like to know what it costs for a manufacturer to build one.

I bought a new 2000 f150 bare bones single cab 6 cyl 5 spd 8' bed for $14k. Now has 254k, original motor, trans, clutch. I also bought a new 2020 f150 2.7. Both trucks get about 21mpg. I drive the older truck more than the new one.

I have a ‘21 GMC Sierra loaded that I bought new. Lifters went at 7,800 mi. and was repaired under warranty. I have 15,000 miles now, and I’d never trust it on a trip. I know several other people that had the lifters go. Another friend of mine traded a ‘21 Silverado (lifters broke) for a ‘24, drove to California and on the way back to NY the fuel pump quit.

Thank you for sharing your experience and thoughts. Appreciate your research and diligent attention to pertinent details. Manufacturers have to comply to required standards as you know. The consumer loses quality and pays for the absolute pure poo. America is not the great nation we use to be. It's certainly not the fault of conservative minded, hard working families that made this a strong and respected country. I'm sure that you know all this. My opinion, again appreciate your attention to details. Stay safe, healthy, strong, discerning and successful. Blessings to you, your wife and family. ☝🙏🙌💪🇺🇸👍
