I’ll never forget the first time I met him as captured in this scene from the Harana film. This was literally the first time we met and played together. I think you can get a sense that we were feeling each other out.
I had no idea what I was getting other than what the village-folk was saying - that he once was the go-to haranista (serenader) of the town.
Prior to this moment, I had begun questioning whether my quest for authentic haranistas was just a fantasy or wishful thinking. We have “auditioned” several haranistas from province to province and finding them - well let’s just say all haranistas are not created equal.
Until I met Celestino Aniel. It was then that I knew we have a magical film in our hands.
Many thanks to producer Fides Enriquez, my wife, co-creator and chief enabler. And to Benito Bautista helming our film crew with enthusiasm and creative energy. And to the film crew of about 14 (from grip to drivers) for braving it with us traveling remote provinces.
And so proud of our cinematographer Peggy Peralta who won the Cinematography - Documentary Feature Honorable Mention Award at the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival (2013) for her work in Harana.

My birth year is in 2008 but I was exposed to a lot of old Filipino music because of my grandparents and I'm so grateful that I got to know them. Throughout the video, I cried and I don't know how to explain it exactly but there's just something there that feels so comforting and captivating.

I agree with you! We're also the same birth year, yet I'm exposed to all of these old goodies. I sing them as well. Ako'y umaawit pangunahin sa dyanra ng Kundiman tapos ay sa mga lumang OPM tulad nina Rico J., Hajji, etc. Umaawit din ako ng mga Traditional Pop tulad ni Engelbert Humperdinck, Andy Williams, atbp. Mayroon nga akong pinagmamay-ariang turntable kung saan napapatugtog ko ang 'Lumang Simbahan' ni Larry Miranda.

Just finished watching the documentary. Magical moment. Hindi mo aakalaing may tinatagong magic si Lolo Tino. Magugulat ka na lang pag kanta niya. Grabe. Para kang biglang tinatangay at dinuduyan, patungo sa isang malayong lugar na kung saan nabubuhay pa rin pala ang iyong nasawing kasintahan.

Im currently 18 yrs old i was born on 2005 and i didn't really get to hear the "kundiman" song before because my dad played the song air supply instead 😅 I didn't get to meet my grand parents also and didn't get to talk to them about traditional culture before, and recently i've watched YOUR documentary about "HARANA" after that documentary i cried and cried realizing that i will never hear this kind of music in my generation and at the same time proud of our traditional culture, and now i just wish that this typical filipino tradition will be revive once again so that my future children will remember the golder era of our country❤❤ Since then pinapakinggan ko na yung mga song na na ginawa niyo ❤❤❤

I love this rendition. I listened to Ruben Tagalog using Apple Music, and then played this one; this rendition resonates with the soul. The raw voice, emotional appeal, and simplistic sound of the acoustic guitar make it very authentic. I just love it. Thank you for rediscovering the harana and introducing this genre of music to the young generation. It is almost a lost art.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think the sentence that says "Kailan ba Mutya aking makakamit" should be " Kailan ba Mutya aking makakamtan?" It rhymes with "ang ligayang dulot ng iyong kagandahan."Just curious. When we were serenading back in 60's I used to sing that song. Maybe I am not singing it correctly. Sorry!

Ngayon ko lamang napagtuunan ng pansin ang channel mo. Tubo ako ng Mindoro, nagaral at nag hanapbuhay sa Maynila at ngayo naririto sa Los Angeles simula ng 1990. Noong kabataan ko pa (teenager) ay mandalas akong sumama sa Harana sapagkat kami lamang ang mayroong gitara Kudyapi) . Nakalulungkot na halos wala na ang harana ngayon……ang dahilan, technology. Everybody owns a cellphone and it’s much easier and faster to express themselves thru this media. The deep personal involvement in expressing yourself is no longer there.

This song is just beautiful, it makes me feel lucky and proud to be born into Filipino culture. However, there was something about THIS rendition that always touched my heart.
