Yes unfortunately for the studio, Weaver had become a very bankable box office draw by the time Aliens was to be produced. Alien garnered her lot of overnight attention as a newcomer, and she followed that up with two major hits: The Year of Living Dangerously with Mel Gibson, and Ghostbusters. She also did a movie right after Alien called Eyewitness playing a reporter with William Hurt. The movie didn’t do very well but she earned good reviews for her performance. All of this meant she could command a sizable salary. It ultimately worked out very well for the studio since Aliens was a major box office hit. I still remember it felt like an “Event” movie that summer of 1986, it was all over the entertainment magazines and the reviews were great, and Weaver earned her first Oscar nomination. And then two years later she’d be nominated twice in the same year for Gorillas In The Mist and Working Girl.

The third Alien movie wasn't bad per se, but it does shit all over the end of this one so it's a very poor sequel. As for the others, at least they're mostly better than the Terminator sequels. :) But now that I think of it, it's pretty much the same issue with both franchises, two excellent movies, the third one not that bad but doesn't fit the narrative, and a bunch of half-assed sequels many years later. :)

Also, the fact that Ripley wasn't the only token competent woman in the movie, with three women in the Marines (Vasquez, Dietrich and Ferro) and the fact that there are female marines and no one even remarks on it, means this is the norm for this time and not something exceptional they need to call out

Yeah, wish the Hollywood types would re-watch some of these older movies and relearn how to make good female characters. Audiences loved these older characters. Most of the ones they make now are either openly antagonistic to men, complete misanthropes, or pandering and subtly insulting to women. Plus they usually have all the personality, charm, backstory, and character development of a plank of wood.

Leaving out that early scene with the colonists was one of the best editing decisions in the history of film. Without that, the movie is such a tense, slow build, with no aliens on screen for most of the first half, before all hell breaks loose. Full on edge of your seat, because while you know what's coming, you haven't seen it, and your brain tries to fill in the gaps. Everything else from the DC, though, was good stuff. My dream version is the DC without the early colonists scene.

Cameron said he had to answer the viewer's question, why would Ripley willingly go back out there again. So has her say "hell no" at first. Having teeth-clenching nightmares, night after night, and declining living standards seems like valid reasons for Ripley to change her mind. It also sets up the marines not believing her. They thought she was hysterical and over-reporting the aliens to match her fears, rather than she was accurate and the aliens were actually that fiercesome.

One thing that you probably heard but didn't understand the context for Hudson freaking out all the time, but as they were doing Dropship prep, Apone says 'I don't care if you are short Hudson, get it done.' Being short is military jargon for being only a short time until your enlistment is up, in garrison it usually means a don't give a crap attitude, but going into combat they are usually trying to stay out of the line of fire so they can return home in one piece. If you look at Hudson's armor, in fresh markings it actually says 'contents under pressure, do not puncture', in a nod to him being a short timer.

It's a fair point, but I don't think you're realizing just how goddamn big space is. We also don't know how much Ripley's life-raft had diverted from the Nostromo's original course, especially after the ship itself altered heading to investigate LV-426. Further, the Company, if they could even be bothered to attempt search-and-rescue in this context (costly), wouldn't have known anything was amiss for at least 10 months after Ripley's launch, so the size of the potential search area would be unfathomable. You have to remember that with the distances involved, even radio waves aren't fast enough to make communication feasible, so Weyland-Yutani knew nothing of what had happened until Ripley arrived with her life-raft full of data. That's why it took until Ripley's return for Burke/the Company to send colonists after the Engineer's ship.

5:06 Random trivia: The picture of Ripley's daughter as an old woman is actually a picture of Sigourney Weaver's mother. 5:43 Yep, it's definitely a model, and probably RC in some way. 7:00 They used to sell those in science museum gift shops everywhere in the 80s and 90s. There's a little magnet in the base which flips on and off, causing the top ring to swing back and forth. There's probably tons of them on eBay these days. No idea what they're called, tho. 18:48 THAT EXACT SCENE WAS FILMED, although Ripley gives him a grenade. However, in editing, they realized that only like an hour had passed since Burke was taken, so he would still be face-hugged and not able to talk. So it was cut. And don't watch Alien 3. Just don't. Don't even look it up in the Wiki. Trust me. (And everyone else undoubtedly saying the same.)

You don't need the information about Ripley's daughter to get their connection. In Alien Ripley was traumatized by being the only survivor against this overpowering threat. In this movie she encounters a girl who is the only survivor of an even greater threat who has been on her own for months. This kind of shared trauma can create a connection, knowing someone else understands what you've been through that other people who haven't experienced can not understand. I watched this movie when I was a kid in the 80's and I was never confused by their relationship.

"Aliens" is the pitch perfect sequel movie. It should be held up as the Gold Standard of how to do a sequel. Unfortunately, Hollywood does the exact opposite. "T2" is the only other movie sequel that holds it's own on par with "Aliens". And for both Alien and Terminator franchises, the stories end with the second movies. That's it.
