Yes, Iron Eagle! Only in the 80’s could a kid, with the help of his friends, go on a dangerous secret mission flying a stolen military jet to rescue his dad. This is a classic!

Thank you! Was about to ask if anyone remembered it. Most of my friends had a crush on Wil Wheaton I was obsessed with the song by Martika of the same name, my dad confiscated my cassette and then my player, so I bought it on vinyl and used his record player 😂. He considered himself a purist, hated cassettes, refused to entertain the idea of CD’s, vinyl was king, didn’t hate the VCR though. I was punished for being clever ,but he didn’t stop me using it and just banged on about the cost of replacement needles after that. Good times 😊

As a graduate of the Air Force Academy, this movie was the subject of one of the favorite jokes there. You have a person who stole a United States Air Force jet, flew across international borders, and bombed a foreign country. Our joke was that instead of sending him to jail for 25 years they sent him to the Air Force Academy for four.

1986. Top Gun might've been the bigger movie. But Iron Eagle pre-dates it by 4 months, became a cult classic and did start a buzz of wanting to be an air-force pilot. I was age 6 when this was released. Saw it on video cassette with my father and loved it. Jason Gedrick was a fan favorite, teen actor in the 1980s. His name Doug Masters is a perfect 80s hero name. Using music as his energy and showing his worth as an young pilot. The great Louis Gossett Jr. as Chappy Sinclair is perfect. Loosely inspired by a real pilot (Daniel "Chappy" James, Jr) of the Tuskegee Airman who flew during the Vietnam & Korean War. The title of the movie has a double meaning: In reality, it's an American military officer who has attained the rank of colonel but will not be promoted to the rank of general. The rank insignia worn by a Colonel resembling an eagle. In the movie, it means to be a one man aerial force of nature or a perfect combat flyer, untouchable/invincible. The story, cast, soundtrack, etc is so much fun. 3 sequels got made, 2 theatrical and 1 straight to video.

Fun fact: director Sidney J. Furie's word under buget in a "Low Cost Top Gun" was the main reason he was hired to shoot "Superman IV". The movie had a budget of US$36 million for Superman IV. But just before filming was to begin, Cannon Pictures started to suffer financial problems. So, the budget was cut to meager US$17 million. As a result, Furie had to cut corners by doing things like reusing special effects and cheaper locations. Furie even managed to direct "Iron Eagle II" and "Iron Eagle IV".

A true guilty pleasure of mine from the 80's for sure. Plus, I could say enough about Louis Gosset Jr.s performance in this movie. His talent for bringing his character to life is what truly made this movie the gem that it is. Without him being in this movie, it would have just been a typical straight to video humdrum wanna be action movie of the 80's.

I wanted to be a fighter pilot as a little girl, and am now currently involved with aviation in the military, including working behind the scenes on those air refuelers you were wondering about! Growing up in a trailer park in South Florida, my Da won a 19” Color TV/VCR combo unit from his Union Christmas Party in 1987, when I was just ten years old. It was packed with a NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) with Duck Hunt and Super Mario Bros. It also included Short Circuit and Iron Eagle. This was the first television on our block and our only two VHS tapes were Short Circuit and Iron Eagle. I probably watched that cassette 30 times before I ever caught Top Gun in an edited for TV broadcast in 1993. I remarked, "It felt a lot like Iron Eagle" when I first watched Top Gun!

Flying solo for the first time is one of my all time favorite memories. It was terrifying, amazing, peaceful and exciting all at the same time. Those words don't even do it justice. I remember sitting on the taxiway waiting for my first solo clearance. I got my clearance and turned on to the runway. I lined the nose of my Cessna 152 down the center and stopped. I took a really deep breath, repeated, "wtf am I doing?" over and over.... throttled up and released the brakes. I rolled down the runway slowly gaining speed (after all, it was a Cessna 152). I got up to rotation speed and took off. I was freaked out!...but stayed composed. I did my first lap in the pattern (of three) and lined up for a touch and go (that's where you land and take off again without stopping). I had everything lined up, flaps were now fully extended on short final. I slowly descended aiming for the runway numbers.. I passed the numbers by a little bit but that was okay because the runway was plenty long for that tiny plane. I got closer and closer to the ground.... just as I got into ground effect, I started my flair... then BAM! crashed, burned and all hell broke loose!.... just kidding.... the rear wheels touched down, I cut the throttle and the nose wheel came down. I rolled a bit and pushed the throttle back in..... regained speed and took off again. The moment my nose wheel touched the ground, that was it. I knew I could do it and I was never frightened again. (not including the few mechanical problems I had to deal with over the years and one scary and cranky check pilot).

Ashley, the aircraft in this movie are the Lockheed Martin F-16 ‘Fighting Falcon’ a fast, light, maneuverable air superiority fighter (think a Ferrari for the sky), the aircraft in Top Gun Grumman F-14 Tomcat, (think an old school muscle car for the sky) The Tomcat can carry a greater weapon load out, and can hit Mach 2.34 The F-16 was designed to hit Mach 2 and regularly pull 9G maneuvers, but carries less ordinance than the 14 The 16 is more maneuverable, the 14 is better general purpose

This reminds me how much I want you to react to Louis Gossett Jr.'s Oscar winning performance in "An Officer and a Gentleman" (1982). Some would say more than one shift, but the most obvious one was the change in America's attitude toward its service members.

Because if you enjoyed Top Gun, and Iron Eagle, you will love Maverick! 43:17 to my knowledge there’s 4… this one is the best one though, the second took itself too seriously and though enjoyable, is not as good as the first (it also has a controversial opening scene). The third is silly, like, ridiculously silly. The fourth I haven’t seen myself, but I’ve heard it’s pretty forgettable… Once again thank you for reacting to Iron Eagle! As for those simulators: Only simulators for commercial aircraft (i.e. airliners) are using a moving cockpit. Mission simulators for military jets usually are static, as you couldn't simulate the G-Forces anyways. (Your ability to withstand those forces would be tested seperately in a centrifuge) As for midair refuelling: You have see l similar tankers refuelling bombers in the intro of Dr.Strangelove.

Funny Ashleigh brought up the soundtrack..... Robbie Rist, the kid with the glasses, was part of the cast of a music oriented Saturday morning kids show called Kidd Video. While it was mostly animated, there was a music video at the end of every episode performed by the cast. All original songs. Rist, besides being an actor, is a musician, composer and voiceover talent. He composed the soundtrack for TMNT II: The Secret Of The Ooze and has quite the catalog of voiceover work. Rist was a child actor and was on the last season of The Brady Bunch as the infamous cousin Oliver. There are some Kidd Video episodes still available here along with the music videos.

Flying for the first time: you have a flight instructor so you feel OK. In your first solo flight: is a bit un-nerving, but then you have so much to do you forget fear, remember your training, and just get your stuff done. Once you land and walk out the airport you realize "Damm! I just flew by myself!!!" In a nutshell: flying is the hardest thing I have done... and the most gratifying. Flight simulators: a lot of them move, but depending on what airplane some move a lot and some less. By the way: this is all practical effects, no CGI, just really damm good flying.
