"Good morning, Dave" was a reference to the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey, with the artificial intelligence HAL (1 letter back on each letter of IBM). When this came out at the cinema, one of the trailers before it was for the Star Wars special editions. Being before many people were on the internet, it came as a real surprise. It was the only time that I've seen a trailer get a standing ovation. You seemed to be watching a different cut of the movie from what I remember seeing. It could be the special edition DVD cut.

When she didn't recognize the "Good morning, Dave" I immediately headed to the comment section to search for it. This OP comment needs to be upvoted. That is a major gap in her movie knowledge and movie tropes. While, yeah "2001: A Space Odyssey" had its extreme lengths in between, it is still a masterpiece, and is referenced sooo often, either by music, or by quotes, it HAS to be in anyone's personal experience who is even mildly into Sci-Fi.

It was released in 1996, on 35mm film stock. I assure you that they did not "rewind it" at any theater/cinema in the known universe. I think the one son being sick is meant to be sort of "set dressing" - helping to establish that the dad/step-dad's drinking and other behavior have been having adverse consequences on other people besides himself; and creating contrast between him and the ste-son who cares enough to do anything he can to help his brother. This sets the stakes for Randy Quaid 's character, not only when they're evacuating, but when he's volunteering to pilot one of the ships and get sober; part of him might want to prove something to himself or others and save the world and all that, but he's mostly doing it for his kids, especially when he sacrifices himself, it's all for them. it's a small detail doesn't seem to amount to anything, but it plays role establishing Russell's character and the trajectory for his redemption.

Hearing Ashley say "If you're going to be in the Vroom-Vroom Lane, Go Vroom-Vroom!" is one of my biggest pet peeves in life. Living here in the UK whenever someone decides to drive in the Fast Lane on a Dual Carriageway or Motorway but then doesn't actually drive fast, that just produces some caveman like rage from deep within my being. If you don't want to drive fast or can't or find it too scary then stay out of the Vroom Vroom Lanes.

16:32 A common misconception that classifications are universal. Normally in military classifications when something is classified, even if you have the highest clearance that does not mean you are privvy to all the information that is rated at that clearance level. It works on a need-to-know basis; Let's say I as a cook have Top Secret clearance because it's needed to use a secret ice-cream maker that is classified at that level. This does not mean I have access to a Top Secret classified bumper-sticker, because I have no relevant reason to know anything about it being a cook. But on the flip side there might be a mechanic with top secret clearance that is allowed to know all about the secret bumper sticker, who has no business knowing about the Ice-cream maker.

That's an interesting way to put it. I always remember the red lanterns. We'd have senators or what not come through and their group leader would have a red lantern that would set off warning lights. When we saw them, if you were in a "Need to Know" project room, you closed the door and if you were out on the floor, you flipped closed files or turned over paperwork. Which meant what you were working on gave you a higher clearance than the senators and high ranking officials in those groups.

Tldr: the word is vivisection, and yeah, internal bleeding can be a major issue Dissection while alive, aka vivisection. And internal bleeding can be problematic for a number of reasons.. number one is blood loss, but also no matter where it is in the body, there is a potential for cross contamination. There are a lot of germs in the body, and that's fine in their designated locations, but internal bleeding means some of the internal walls have been breached and fluid transfer has occurred which can lead to major infection. Additionally pressure can build up from fluid building up in the body cavity causing issues for the internal organs. From a medical standpoint this can be an issue, because the tiniest of cuts can be an issue if for instance its on a vein, artery, or even large enough capillary. When trying to repair a major wound you need to suture or cauterize as many little wounds as possible. The problem being the body isn't a neat and tidy place. It's wet and floppy and as such, missing a millimeter sized cut on the backside of something isn't entirely unheard of. The problem often lies with what comes next. That tiny wound depending on where it's located can cause any number of the aforementioned afflictions and more..
@Rhodair2 жыл бұрын

@RustyDust1012 жыл бұрын
Agreed. An average human has only around five liters of blood in them. Our lung cavity hold on average four liters of air. Our abdominnal cavity easily holds twenty liters of fluid. So any major artery nicked anywhere inside the body can cause a human to bleed out internally. So yes, internal bleeding can quickly lead to death, even without an infection, as the blood is not contained in the blood vessels but in open cavities where no blood should be.

The sick kid, and the virginity loss daughter, were both in the theatrical cut. They just weren't as much of a focus. That's when Randy Quaid looks out and sees all the other vehicles that they join up with, which is why it wasn't cut. The concern was that 2000 would be read as 00 and systems would confuse it with the year 1900. If so, this could lead to huge amounts of data being lost and reset to 1900. I still VIVIDLY remember when this movie came out. Saw the first shots of the movie on TV in a quick preview. The shots of the CITY SIZED ships hovering over New York was the first thing i saw and it impressed me soooo much, i instantly knew i HAD to watch this film. I just could never memorize the title cuz as a german kid in '96 with very little english knowledge it was really hard to memorize :P Fast 8 or 10 months or so and my best friend in school borrowed me his VHS copy of that film so i could finally watch it. It had such a great 3D lenticular card with the animation of the blowing up of the white house and some words of thanks by the makers of the movie, on the backside. First watched it on my own and then a second time together with my patents and my sister. We celebrated that film so much and i eventually got the VHS myself (sadly only the Pan Scan version). And back in early 2001 or so, the first DVD release of it was one of my first DVDs and also one of my first Special editions as it came with two discs and both the theatrical and the extended cut. For a while i didn't watch it anymore as i found it to be very cheesy and the pathos kinda turned me off. But i re-watched the movie again 2 years ago on Blu-ray (the first BD release) and completely forgot how good it is. It felt like watching it for the first time again and THIS movie really was when 90s cinema really couldn't get any bigger than that. This movie blew away absolutely EVERYTHING in 1996. :) My best buddy in middleschool also had that incredible movie poster for real and had it in his room for many year.

James Caan just died yesterday, and I know that you like to react to a film in remembrance for stars when they pass away. A few suggestions if you're thinking of doing so for Caan are "Mickey Blue Eyes", "Rollerball", and "Alien Nation".

Yes we went to the moon, and yes there's a plaque~ People often forget we didn't go just once and refer to apollo missions as "the" moon landing

The "... this is our Independence Day ..." speech has been memed on the internet for 2.5 decades , and it keeps going . Such amazing cheese . Also, in the 2000's sci-fi TV show Battlestar Galactica , the actress who played the First Lady in this movie was cast as the President -- me thinks intentionally, as a nod to this movie . And she's quite good there as well . Lot's of acting range .

She was great in that. She was waaaaay down the list of succession, but everyone else had died so she was President.

Given the ending of _'Battlestar Galactica',_ I've always had the headcanon that Marilyn Whitmore (the First Lady) is, in fact, a descendent of Laura Roslin’s! Also, sci-fi writers need to stop killing Mary McDonnell!
