The sequel is definitely not as good as the original. They made some pretty dumb decisions with it, but at the same time, I didn't hate it. The ending to the sequel is more realistic than the ending to this one, imo. Humans would not have won this encounter by any stretch of the imagination. The movie was originally filmed with Russell being rejected to fly in the attack on the alien ship because of his alcoholism, and he was heartbroken because it was his chance to redeem himself, and flying was the one thing he could actually do well. When all the fighters had expended their missiles, Russell showed up in his cropduster with a missile strapped to it already knowing that he would have to sacrifice himself by ramming his plane onto the aliens' main weapon to stop them. The scene (which, because it wasn't used in the final version of the film, doesn't have full special effects) is available on KZbin if you want to see it. At a test screening, people couldn't help laughing at how ridiculous it looked when Russell's old biplane was keeping pace with the supersonic jet fighters that were "plowing the road" for him on his final attack, so they changed the story to what you see now. To me the biggest improvement from the change is the emotional scene when Russell looks at the photo of his children and resolves that he has to sacrifice himself for their sake.

I’ve heard that story before, but never really believed it was exactly as stupid as it turns out to be. I am more so.
@Daveyboy100880 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I was surprised when I saw that scene on the DVD, and very thankful that they changed it! It did make me realise why everyone seems so surprised when he turns up with the last missile, though, and why his cockpit is different to all the others and why his jet seems to be going slower than it should and manoeuvring in odd ways (apparently they simply assigned the F-18 to the exact same flightpath as the crop duster, as they didn’t have time to redo the shots completely). I think they did a really good job in rewriting it!
@kingsteve80832 ай бұрын
@@TommygunNG It's true.
@kingsteve80832 ай бұрын
I think it was definitely more impactful. Also, when he's in the cropduster it just makes him look like a crazy man who's just stolen a missile and going on a suicide run. In the F/A-18 he's getting his own back on the aliens by fighting them, and then, when his missile jams, he makes that decision to sacrifice himself. Much more impactful.

One of the greatest summer blockbusters ever. Meant for a July 3rd release. But then it was pushed to July 2nd for huge demand. A cast of this size well built for a film this size. The actors they casted were all enjoyable to watch. Filmmakers, director Emmerich & writer Devlin had prior hits (Universal Soldier & Stargate) and this was their biggest one yet. The teaser trailer had everybody losing it. Especially with The White House getting torched. The speech by Bill Pullman as president Whitmore to the last line of defense is one of the great movie speeches ever. The merchandise was crazy. Toys, video games, prequel publications (one was a novel and the other was a comic from by Marvel), etc. The cropduster's character was actually abducted as presented in Independence Day #0 from Marvel Comics. No.1 film of 1996 and Academy Award winner for Best Visual Effects. As for the 2016 sequel aka Resurgence........ Well you'll have to see that for yourself.

Bill Pullman's speech as the President is... it's such a trope, it feels like a given in a movie like this, it shouldn't be as good as it is, but goddamn does he knock it out of the park. The delivery, the music swelling, the stakes that have been raised so high up to this point... perfect. Jen! You didn't seem to have a recognition of the computer's greeting to David, "Good morning, Dave." Did you recognize the graphic? In case you didn't (and this will not spoil the movie it's from), it was an homage to "2001: A Space Odyssey." The graphic was the "eye" of the AI computer, HAL.

The same composer did the same film score for “Stargate” which was made by the same director and writer in 1994. That film is what gave them the green light to make Independence Day. You will hear the same similarities in both film scores. That guy is one of my favorite all time film composers and the two soundtracks i listen to still today.

If you haven't seen the movie "Arrival", you are missing out Jen. Its top 5 greatest movies of all time in my opinion. Add it to the list!

Which one? The Denis Villeneuve bit of awesomeness from a few years ago or the Charlie Sheen-starring one from around the time "Independence Day" came out? Both are awesome in very different ways. 😄

@@karlmortoniv2951 well, I think you are well aware of which one I'm referring to but just in case, it's not got Charlie Sheen in it.

The special effects were unbelievable! It keeps you on the edge of your seat right to the very end! The acting and the storyline was just flawless. This is a great movie to spend with friends and family on what else? Independence day!

A lot of that came down to the fact that CGI was used only sparingly. The explosions, for example, were all done using miniatures and practical effects, which is why they seemed so realistic - they were real pyrotechnics.

David Arnold's score is one of the best of the 90s. Classic at this point.

The effects they used for the city destruction was amazing, I remember watching the behind the scenes of the movie back when it came out and it was large table sized models they rigged with pyrotechnics. Awesome work.

The one-two punch of MIB and this movie really launched Will Smith's career into the stratosphere. Then he made Wild, Wild, West. 🤣 🤣 (His career did survive that misstep though)

More like one-two-three punch. Bad Boys in 1995. While that was in theaters, he started on ID4 and after that, he wrapped up the Fresh Prince of Bel Air.

Thank you for loving the music. I think the best part of the score is when the first lady died. So emotional music.

With our tendencies to go to war against ourselves, I wouldn't be surprised if the only Aliens that came and were willing to make themselves known to us would be looking for a fight. Fun film!

Finding a common enemy is a favorite and effective strategy in history. What we need today is a good ol fashion space ET invasion. The HFY genre has alot of this.

Mark 27:51. Oh yeah! Brent Spiner! At this point, you don't know him as the androids, "Data", "Lore", "B-4" and their creator! He's a nice guy in person, by the way! 😊 But you will, if you ever get to see, "Star Trek: The Next Generation"!

Bill Pullman's son plays another accomplished pilot in another movie. You'd know him as Bob in Top Gun Maverick. It's also amazing how much of practical effects were used for the ships and the city destruction scenes.

I love Jen Murray's reaction videos. Watching her watching Independence Day is like a gift from Heaven, something like that. This movie was one of the greatest blockbusters from the 90s. Its mass success was so big that even there was a themed-pinball machine about it (I played it when I was younger). On Spain the movie was promoted using Orson Welles' tactic with his "The War of the Worlds" 1938 radiocast, a way to pay tribute to Welles: the scene of the journalists talking about to make contact with the alien ship was aired on some Spanish TV channels as if it was real. Bill Pullman like a fictional President Bill Clinton is amazing. About your comment of if Hiller's military carrier was be affected to marry Jasmine, I have a riddle for you: synonim of "prestige", 10 letters. Starts with R. This word is everything, for everyone. Without it, you have nothing for good.

Will Smith released this between Bad Boys and Men In Black. Other films by director Roland Emmerich include Universal Soldier and Stargate. The sci-fi satire Mars Attacks! released the same year as this. Another alien invasion movie worth watching is Battle: Los Angeles

Jen! I'm glad you enjoyed Julius. Before your time, he was the lead cast member on one of the best sitcoms of all time, "Taxi." His name is Judd Hirsch. Also, most likely unbeknownst to you, another actor you actually do know, Christopher Lloyd (Doc Brown from the "Back to the Future" movies) was in the SAME sitcom. There was a lot of good stuff on TV before your time. :)

16:46 Somewhere out there someone has probably uploaded the Movie Magic episode dedicated to Independence Day, but the general gist is: They build miniature city blocks that hung vertically, and were wired with detcord (explosive string, pretty much). They also had a pyro nozzle at the base of the vertically hung piece. A super high speed camera looked down on the blocks, and once it was at speed, they set off the pyro and the detcord followed in milliescond intervals. The whole shot took all of about 2 seconds total before the pyro flame burned out and the detcord had finished, but they were filming at like 5,000 frames a second so they could slow it down to make an explosion like that take three minutes. The more impressive ones are the buildings in Los Angeles and New York that are hit. Those were standing models about 5 feet high and absolutely lined to the teeth with coils of detcord. High speed camera and sequentially firing the cords gave the layered explosion effect going down the buildings.

Jen! Really glad you noticed the music. You even imitated the little two-note cue as time went out on David's laptop. The composer is David Arnold. Just a note, Roland Emmerich, the director also used David Arnold for the music in another epic movie he did right before this one. It's called "Stargate." Can't wait for you to do that one.

I was lucky enough to watch this in the theater on its opening weekend, and watched it countless times on VHS. Had a couple of the alien toy figures (and the floppy disk games that came with them!) as well. Having the movie take place on the same date as its opening was such a simple, but brilliant move. The story is pretty cheesy, but the actors make it so watchable. As much as I love Jeff Goldblum and Will Smith (and yes, this and Men In Black are peak Will Smith), I was most hyped to see Dr. Okun. He was played by Brent Spiner, who played Data on Star Trek: The Next Generation. Speaking of which, you should try giving the older Star Trek movies a chance. Wrath of Khan is an excellent place to start... All that aside, the visuals were absolutely mind-blowing. Once you saw the White House get destroyed in the teaser trailer, you _had_ to watch the movie. Looking back, it's arguably _the_ definitive 90s summer blockbuster.

Definitely a great summer blockbuster! I saw this one opening day at the Arlington Theater in Santa Barbara. It is one of the old timey big theaters with ornate walls and balconies. It was a big event back then. I'd like to see your reaction to the sequel because you would have fresh eyes having just seen the original. It might hold more impact.

I loved that they cast Brent Spiner, aka Lieutenant Commander Data from Star Trek TNG, as the crazy scientist for Area 51. Mary McDonnel, First Lady here, played another extremely high placed person in another sci-fi series: Battlestar Galactica. She does absolutely stunning character portraityals. While many people despised BG for its switching of the old series characters, I personally loved it to bits and watched the whole series multiple times. If you like THIS sound-track, you'll be absolutely blown away by the BG soundtrack composed and adapted by Bear McCreary.

If you're in the mood for more sci-fi I'd highly recommend "Oblivion" starring Tom Cruise and Morgan Freeman. I know how you love a good film score and the music in this by M83 is fantastic. By the way it's written and directed by Joseph Kosinski, the director of "Top Gun : Maverick".
