Of course, Dame Shirley doesn’t have ‘nothing’. She has EVERYTHING and she brings it ALL in EVERY performance. I have seen her perform live a few times and have also met her a few times - her stage persona and her real self are radically different, away from the spotlight she’s warm, approachable, humble, can be surprisingly shy, and she so isn’t full of herself. I enjoy your reactions, Patrick, they are thoughtful and original and most of all, enjoyable.

She used to cry often when she sang. For me, the best way I can describe it is 'primal' singing. Tom Jones does it too. It comes from deep in their soul.

Dame Shirley Bassey is the only artist who has received at least one top 40 hit in 7 consecutive decades! She was inducted into the Guinness Book of World in 2000 for being the largest selling female artist from the United Kingdom. Shirley learned her craft from veteran Vaudville performers back in the late 1950s. Unlike so many artists, she does NOT just stand like a tree and sing. She acts through her performances. She has the VOICE, but it is the complete performance package that few past or present have been able to master. When starting her career, Shirley wanted to get into the movies. But, this wasn't that easy for a mixed-race person in the late 1950s to early 1960s. So, after many disappointments, she gave up on that career goal and concentrated on her music. The rest is History! Barbra Streisand said many decades ago that Shirley was the only performer that she would pay to see.

i believe this song is from one of her Variety Shows here in America as one of the first Black Women to ever have her own show. She gives it her all in every performance. She is unmatched, a one of a kind, once in a lifetime singer and vocalist. The range power resonance control beauty and inflection of her voice is incredible. Thanks for reacting.

You're well on your way now, Pres, on your Shirley Bassey journey and so interesting to see you having the same reactions as mine when first hearing her in the late 50's. Incredible to think that she debuted in Las Vegas in 1957, had her first UK No1 in 1958. With Shirley it's not only the voice, but the way she emotes a song. There are other great divas but no one, absolutely no one, can deliver it with such emotion. Thats what makes her so special. As you continue your journey there are more delights ahead!

If you want to see the sexist but still classy performance by a woman in the history of music, try Come on baby light my fire 1973, Shirley is just the greatest performer of songs there is and there are many songs to choose from.

Dame Shirley can be found on social media platforms, still very much the same as ever and one of the nicest people you could ever wish to meet. Queen used to have a song Dame Shirley recorded Hey Big Spender, which originally came from a musical, Freddie loved the song and the two were friends, she also has a very wicked sense of humour, one occasion HRH Prince Phillip 80th birthday held at The Royal Albert Hall, she took her chances 😁 but again they were friends and also with our late Queen Elizabeth and the other members of the family. Although now 86 still loving life. The most recent album released I think 2020/21 I Owe It All To You, a thank you for the loyal fans over a now 70 year celebration of a life on stage. I agree that the singers of today are very different, and I don't think in this day and age they'll have a 70 year career and counting, like the rest of Dame Shirley generation, no autotuning, it's very much what you see is what you get, and doesn't actually need a microphone. I would watch The Electric Proms from around 2009 Glastonbury around 2007 and appearances on British TV and the sense of humour and fun with hosts who the majority of time were again friends

Great reaction. So refreshing to see/hear a KZbin reviewer actually able to articulate his thoughts and observations. Personally, SB is one of those singers/performers who brings tears of joy to my eyes when I see her. You realise you are in the presence of a master, someone at the very top of their profession. Shame that so many of the younger generation will never even hear of her, let alone get to experience her performances.

Hi Patrick! Thank you for creating this content. I’m happy that you found DSB!! She is phenomenal! Here’s another fact about her that you might want to keep in mind as you’re listening to her: She lost her voice on stage in the 80’s after losing her daughter. She came back to the craft after roughly a decade and her voice was deeper and had more range!

Our Shirley is an icon but was not afraid to laugh at herself. Check her out on a show called Morcombe and Wise . They were a British comedy duo who were huge in the UK . Celebrities would appear on their show and and be in comedy sketches with them . Our Tom Jones was on with them as well. Hilariously funny. Check it out !!!

Shirley Bassey's voice is fantastic and she does this song well. However, you might want to listen to Tom Jones sing this and 'I will never fall in love again'. He is also from Wales and has a really strong voice.

By far one of the greatest live performances I have ever had the privilege of seeing several times, second only to, and not by much, Barbra Streisand; for me, that's saying quite a lot. I was spellbound. The woman didn't even need a microphone. There are so many great performances of Shirley's, but I second another's suggestion of "This Is My Life," and also, "I Am What I Am"...there are several good versions but I recommend the 'high quality' 1989 one. Great reaction, Patrick, you are always spot on with your analyses.

She found a vocal coach her worked with her an discovered she had another octave her voice got even stronger! She’s one of a kind. Watch the royal albert concert she goes from and I love you so into let me sing an I’m happy talk about a artist who is in the zone she commands that orchestra

Yes, everyone will, quite rightly, request the greats like "This is my life", but you should include her saucy sense of humour in performances of "Hey, Big Spender" and "Nobody does it like me" etc. As well as her collaborations with pop groups - "History Repeating" with the Propellerheads and "The Rhythm Divine" with Yello. Also, treat yourself to her appearances on The Graham Norton show. She's so warm and funny. Loved by all. She even had a coin minted for her. Nobody does it like Shirl!

I’m loving your reaction to Dame Shirley Bassey. A lot of Americans are discovering Shirley late. In the UK she is regarded as a National Treasure. The truth is, in the 1950’s and 1960’s, America had, Garland and Streisand and while, Shirley had been a guest on several TV shows and made a television special with Count Basie, she didn’t impact across the whole of America. Along with their recordings, the other ace card that secured global stardom for both Garland and Streisand were their film appearances and this is where there is a sad twist in Shirley's story, reflecting the attitudes of the time. Celebrated film director, Carol Reed was crazy about Shirley and was determined to cast her as, Nancy in the film musical of, Oliver! (1968) Unfortunately, the American backers felt that parts of America would never accept a black, Nancy and eventually, Reed gave in to the pressure. Ironically, Shirley had a number 1 hit in the UK with her recording of, ‘As Long As He Needs Me’ Nancy’s big number in the musical. Shirley’s first husband, the gay film director, Kenneth Hume had been the main voice in trying to get Shirley on the big screen but when he died in 1967, there was no more talk of acting and a stage musical called ‘Napoleon’ where Shirley had been cast to play Josephine, was cancelled.

You will no doubt have many suggestions for reactions for Shirley Bassey and rightly so, there are many and i have already suggested some myself and will again. Your reactions to her are the best because of the way you describe it all. I remember, about 45 years ago, buying one of her albums and playing the first track, "Now You Want To Be Loved". My reaction at that moment was the same as your reaction now and it brings back so many emotions. I'd never heard a female singer like it before and was literally put under a spell which is as strong now as it was 45 years ago. I have seen her live many times on both sides of the globe and it was the thrill of a lifetime it cant be described. Looking forward to more reactions, thank you x
