In the 80s, I saw her live numerous times. She was a great singer, but she could put on a dynamic show. She was a beautiful woman and episized her beautiful body but with humor. I never heard anyone like Shirley Bassey. She was one of the best vocalists of all time.

However, she is largely forgotten or ignored by the Millennial and Gen Z generations. She was very well known in the 1960s and 1970s mainly due to her having sung three 007 James Bond movie themes in that era: "Gold Finger," "Diamonds are Forever," and "Moonraker." She is the only singer to perform more than one James Bond song theme for the movies. Dame Shirley Bassey was born in Cardiff, Wales in 1937. What is so amazing about Shirley Bassey is that she never sings the same song the same when she performs it live. This is why she has always preferred a live audience. Check out Shirley's 1974 rendition of "My Way" that was performed on one of her many, many TV specials. Again, she approaches this song a little differently with her vibrato, but with the same outstanding results! Check out Shirley's 1995 performance of 'Who Wants To Live Forever'. She performed this on a TV Show. Also, see her 1979 rendition of the song, 'I Who Have Nothing'. This was performed on her TV show. This lady started in show business back in 1953 at the age of 16. Her family was extremely poor living in Tiger Bay, Wales, and at an early age she discovered that singing was the only way she could move up financially in her life. She is the only artist in history who has achieved a top 40 hit in 7 consecutive decades. She has had a ton of her own single hits, but her album sales were amazing. She is simply iconic, a Welsh singer from Tiger Bay in Cardiff (just down the road from me) and I grew up listening to her. She sang the theme songs for 3 Bond movies: Goldfinger, Diamonds are Forever and Moonraker. Her most well-known songs are Hey Big Spender, I Who Have Nothing, As Long As He Needs Me, This Is My Life - there are so many, but with her incredible voice and stage presence you can't go wrong!

I read somewhere that Frank thought the song was too self-indulgent and didn't quite like it, but he recognized that it would be a hit and still recorded it. I kinda agree that on paper they seem a bit too grandiose to sing about oneself, but I think Shirley's way of singing them makes it work so well. In her voice, it sounds very emotional and self-reflective rather than self-indulgent

Good old Shirl! Love her. If you plan to take a deep dive into her back catalogue, don't forget to watch her singing The Living Tree during a Royal Variety Performance. Why My Way was so poignant because if you know her history- born black in tiger bay wales ( rough life) . Treated like crap. Now Dame Shirley Bassey lives in Monaco. Her daughter died mysteriously in her 20s. This lady has lived through prejudice, poverty she is a Queen not a DBE. Amazing and so sincere. Apparently a vocal coach said she could have done opera but she came from the slums of Wales- not possible in those days. I love her so much! Xxxxxxxx
