I've commented on him before, but I think Doug McClure was a very nice man. He really encouraged me at one point about something very silly and common, and he barely knew me. It's been ages since that moment, but I've never forgotten it. I love hearing Barbara speaking about him so fondly.

BarBara Luna was also in "Ship of Fools" with Lee Marvin who was nearly beaten to death in the film by an enraged Vivien Leigh, with a high heel shoe of all things. Which Marvin kept as a memento from that film for the rest of his life. Zorro was almost as big a craze among Boomer kids as Davy Crockett. So there was hardly a mailbox, garage door or grade school blackboard that didn't have a Guy Williams "Z" marked on it by some boomer kid imagining himself as his caped hero. BarBara was a great sexy beauty and a terrific actress who made the guest star rounds on mosta the great western shows in those days, so it's not surprising Paladin when she appeared on his show put the moves on her. No one had an unkind word to say about Doug McClure who really must have been a truly great guy, as well as an iconic character in The Virginian as Trampas. Highly entertaining full-length show with BarBara. Great memories from a very classy lady.

Somewhere in a dusty album is a picture of me in my Davy Crockett outfit. And sure enough, a couple of years later I had a black hat, mask, cape and sword and would go riding through the night on my trusty hobby horse. Scratching "Zs" in public places. Also guilty.

@@johnholliday5874 Yeah. Fortunes were made by enterprising marketers on both those crazes. If you were in the glassware wallpaper bubble gum trading card or boys pajama business for instance? I enjoyed seeing this (extended) interview again (this time with my wife). Barbara Luna is so witty, and my wife was impressed by her ageless beauty. By coincidence, last week we just finished watching the entire Disney Zorro series, including the 1960 and 1961 specials. I've never enjoyed a television show more than I did this wonderful series. I can't say enough about how impressive the casting, writing, acting, and stunts were. I doubt it will ever be topped. As for never having seen a western you didn't like, I have to ask if you ever watched Shotgun Slade. I made it through one episode and stopped.
@AWordonWesterns2 жыл бұрын
Of course, I liked SHOTGUN SLADE. I've still got the soundtrack LP with the Peter Gunn style score...which kinda didn't work. But, hey, Col K, IT'S A WESTERN!
@Paladin18732 жыл бұрын
@@AWordonWesterns That was one of my major gripes about it (and I love Peter Gunn and Henry Mancini). Also, he was using a type of shotgun that was not yet invented. I know, I know. Most of the handguns and rifles featured in those old TV westerns were slightly anachronistic, but at least they closely mimicked the guns of the period.

@@AWordonWesterns Odd that you should mention Bobby Hoy. He was and remains a great favorite of mine, especially in The High Chaparral, which I turn on every a.m. as I do my transcribing work at home (because of pandemic). I always thought he was a fine actor (needless to say) and very attractive (OK, I admit it--I always thought he looked perfectly fine in his snug-fitting ranch pants--) The bunkhouse boys on Chaparral were such a group of fine, fine character actors (all these Western character actors are first-rate), and, sadly, so many of the cast members have passed relatively recently--beautiful, beautiful Linda Cristal, Henry Darrow, Don Collier (beautiful blue eyes!) but they will live forever on film.

Wow, we were touring the country and he was the first movie star we encountered on our way to LA. My buddies and I got our drinks and went and sat down around an outdoor fireplace and Doug and his fiancee' (soon to be wife) Diane Furnberg followed us out and sat with us for the entire evening. He wondered why us guys, from Massachusetts, all had "Kennedy eyes." I was trying to get in the movie business and he gave me a handful of people to contact. Really nice people, both of them.

She was amazing, but was not on the show for very long as I would tune in just to see what she was up to... She looked so different and exotic from the rest she really stood out and stood up for herself very good writing. I also remember seeing her on star trek. To me she is much more of a star then any of the men she is talking about. She was the most talented.

She played “Maria Roberts”. She started off as a very strong-willed lady, who had had a child when her character was a child, by Clint Ritchie’s character “Clint” in the story. Clint’s father Asa, played by matinee idol, Phil Carey, was not happy, that the daughter of their family cook, got pregnant by his son. (The Buchanans were the wealthy family of the story). So Asa paid pregnant Maria to leave Texas. The Maria character was mentioned as early as 1980, because this banishment created a big rift between Asa and Clint, who had just reconciled around that time over this. Then ultimately Clint’s illegitimate son Cord (John Loprieno) showed up. And then Maria followed, hoping that this would reunite her and Clint as well. But Clint was married to Viki Lord (Erika Slezak), the leading lady of the show. So it wasn’t very long that Maria schemed and plotted against the Buchanans and the Lords, only for it to catch up with her. But the audience loved every minute of BarBara Luna’s work. She’s one of the most memorable characters I think because of what she did during her time on the show, which I agree it was a year and a half (at most). ❤
