Guru g, just 2 cents from me. instance storage is DAS- local disk attached to the box(local hard disk). and EBS is NAS- from external storage box. No sasta no mahnaga, Without DAS we can not boot the host(hypervisor) itself. EC2 can lost data kyoki guarantee nahi hai ki wo same host pe pwapas on ho after stopping. Mostly we can use for SWAP partition.

I have also one question @technical guftgu if we reboot the OS, then also first OS will shutdown and then start , so for instance store volume how is it possible to have the data as you have already said that on shutdown the instance, data from instance store volume will be deleted automatically.
