Council Tool's Sport Utility line is the best value in axes today. If you would've chopped that tree at the same height that you hit it with the Cold Steel, you would've gotten bigger chips out of it. I have every iteration of Council Tool's Boy's Axes and they are my favorites for camp axes (Red Hardware Store grade, Forest Service Edition, Sport Utility & Bad Boy Velvicut).

Everybody I've heard from loves Council Tool handles, they're already thinned down and shaped very well. The CS handle will break before the CT. The CS handle is far less dense than on the CT at least on my Trail Boss and CT boys axe. About 90% of people prefer a thinner handle as do I.

Guess I'm one of the 10%. Both tools are quality for sure I just liked the cold steel a little more. Thanks for subscribing

The heat pattern is the quench line. And it’s probably about double what the cold steel are. They just don’t polish theirs out. The thinner handle is better. It will not causes much forearm shock. You want that handle to flex. And truthfully, I’d probably thin it out even more. The cold steel head design is more for softwood. While the Dayton pattern of the boys axe is for hardwoods.

I'm glad to know that the coloration is normal. I didn't know the handle shape was for forearm shock. Never threw that was thing. Thanks for the information hope you have a great day

@@Saber_Outdoors also think of it this way. If a bridge is stiff and rigid. It’ll eventually break. But if it flexes and swings in the wind, it don’t break as easy . For me, I set a handle up. Where my index finger will just barely touch my palm. But this is all determined by hand size. You should be able to stick it in a log and flex it 2-3 inches right and left. Also determined by how long it is. You won’t be able to do this with a 14 inch hatchet. But both of those I believe are 28 inches and should flex that much.

I buy my Council Tools Axes thru Whiskey River. Every one has come with a leather sheath. There axes do a superior job and hold their edge better than others including some of my Swedish axes. Everyone else seems to like Council Tools axes.

I like it but i liked the other one a little bit more. I got my axe at a second hand place so that is probably why it didn't have a sheath

I think the main difference here is that the thinner blade of the CS bites into the deadwood more effectively whereas the Council is more for green wood.

That is an interesting thought. Neither is a bad choice for sure but it never occurred to me that one may work better on green/dead wood than the other.

I've got a lot of axes and normally grab my trail boss when I'm dealing with sapling size trees. I spent a couple hours with a file thinning out the edge and I also thinned down the handle. It's a good little axe with a little work.

I agree with everything you said! The Trail Boss is just confidence inspiring in the hands. I bought one 4 years ago for $32 and a year later I saw them selling for $25. Needless to say, I picked up a second one.

I like my cold steel trail boss offers a great value. I just don’t like the grain orientation on the handle. Thanks for your video.

I wonder if it is possible that with the first target being slightly lower (CS Camp) you had just a little more inertia on the swing? I think the bit overall is thinner on the CS, just bites. Either way love both axes, good video.
