Axial Flux Toolchanger - Mechanism Overview and Tool Plate Assembly Instructions

How to assemble the tool plate for the fully 3D printed magswitch toolchanger for ratrig vcore 3. Passively actuated, based on a similar layout to axial flux motors, hence the name. Uses 6 magnets on the toolhead and 6 on the x carriage.

Like a horizontally actuated magswitch? (instead of the rotation I used here). I chose the rotation option because it allowed me to adjust the printers mechanical advantage by increasing the length of the lever arm. But also it has no frictional components. Magswitch ca also be achieved by seperating the magnets in z axis, but that's going to require a wedge, or a cam which is friction on printed parts. That type of magswitch usually requires magnet contact when locked. So then the magnet interface needs to be spring loaded which is another layer of complexity which I have eliminated here.

I would like to see an ADXL mounted to the nozzle. I would be interested in the play in the Y axis. Great work looks to hold really well

Yea, I need to get a nozzle mounted accelerometer. It's printing without layer defects though, so i think it's okay in terms of rigidity. Play in the Y axis would have to come from the X-carriage changing shape (it's currently the same cage system as EVA3). The tool is kinematically mounted so it's not gonna move relatve to the X-carriage. I want to port it to a metal top plate and vertical bolts (like the new ratrig toolhead) instead of horizontal bolts. But motivation is low because it currently works fine.

I like it! I use mag switches for holding woodworking accessories but never thought of using them in 3D printing. It looks like there is a limit of 2 tool heads or am I missing something?

Nope there is can be more, only limit is space in the printer

Can have as many as will fit. But need to design some more docks to mount to extrusions at different angles. I am planning add a vertical bar in the front centre hanging down from the top frame to mount two centre docks. Another option is to design docks that mount to the horizontal bar at the back and install the X-carraige backwards. I did that first, but I wasn't having fun working on docks and tools at the back of the printer.

@@1870movie uh, I think you just need to log in to make a copy. or download it as a step file and import into your preferred CAD package. (you can also get the step files from printables). I only have a free Onshape account because their pricing scheme is total trash, so all my documents are public and I can't restrict permissions on them, so i don't think there is anything I can change.

@@SidekickElements I have verified that I can copy CAD files from other OnShape public accounts into my OnShape account, but OnShape states your CAD is set to "Versions are View Only, Viewing V36 cleaned up". Could you check your sharing settings?

@@1870movie I see. Versions are always view only. I linked to a version because I am working on the "main" so it is not necessarily stable/tested (V36 is). But I guess youi have to go to the main version in order to copy the document. Then you would have to go back into the version tree and role back to v36 to download the files for printing. (or get them from printables).
