Getting much better! Just a few notes: 14:40 - Germany chooses what Vichy French are lost, so they should have taken the tank as a casualty. It defends on a 3 just like the Infantry, so no reason to allow it to fall into Allied hands. 17:06 - Surprised that the Italians didn't place a new landmine in Tobruk in round 8, but placed 1 into Ghadames instead. Not very useful out there. 17:40 - FYI to new viewers. A landmine may only be detonated if you control or have units in the territory the enemy is trying to enter. An unwatched minefield is easy to get around. 19:44 -- Surprised that Axis let the bomber and supply on Malta live. Collateral Damage is amazing against Malta. 32:10 -- 1 supply for every 5 attackers or fraction thereof. It's not just "2 if 6+ attackers." 34:30 -- Looks like an Italian sea mine got placed in the Tripoli convoy. Can't if enemy ships are present. 52:09 -- You already rolled the fighters... Axis take 2 extra casualties and lose the game now. Good game! Bad Axis dice in the end. Looks like the Axis would have done better if they had bombed Malta. That lone UK bomber and meager supply survived for 4 rounds or so, when they should have been attacked immediately. Handing the UK 60 build points like that is going to make it hard for the Axis to win. Thanks, Matt Hyra

Hello Matt, Thanks for the notes! I thought I was getting closer to a clean game... Fortunately, the Vichy tank/infantry debacle didn't amount to much, but I will remember it! Yep, some poor strategic decisions with regards to mines. I just wanted to get one in there before the Shermans showed up and blitzed around, and I wanted to move the scout car out. But, you are correct. More mines on the front lines! Yeah, I was a bit lackadaisical with Malta. I'll do more bombing next game! Sorry, I realized the Supply requirements was a slip up after the fact. Fortunately, it didn't enter into any of the battles. Whoops! Missed that about the mines. Thanks! Yeah, my ADHD kicked in hard near the end as I was doing that last battle, hoping like crazy I didn't screw up. Sigh. Thanks again for all the help!

@@TheHilltopPillbox Forgot to mention... 57:25 -- The US is only forced to use the Casablanca Convoy on Round 7. After that, they can use any of the 3 where they have a token in the CZ. This is mentioned on the USA Setup Card and in the scenario rules. See last bullet of page 29. There it also explains that if you don't control Casablanca, you are free to use the other convoys on round 7. No house rule needed!

Remember that when Bombers attack, they can burn an enemy supply *EVEN IF THE ATTACK MISSES, YOU STILL KILL THE SUPPLY* (but the ability itself does not stack, so 2 bombers still only destroy 1 supply). This is critically important in the quest to destroy Malta's supply. This was noted around the 38:00 mark but wasn't used before then despite their being multiple opportunities to do so. Once again chiming in as a member of [REDACTED], I think Larry's role in the game may be slightly overstated here. Yes he assisted with the general theme and had thumbs-up/thumbs-down decision on most things, but ultimately he was more of an advisor to the project. Matt (the same guy also commenting on these videos) deserves the lion's share of the credit (or blame, if you're absolutely against this game for whatever reason) for bringing this scenario to life. Also I'm surprised at the general reaction that Allies are too powerful. I think it may be a misunderstanding due to the overall flow of the game. Axis are supposed to be on the backfoot at the end, even when they're "winning". It's similar to D-Day where the Axis's objective is to simply survive, not to actually kill the Allies. Even in the Rommel game you are not explicitly meant to actually capture Egypt unless UK either tried a crazy strategy and failed or got horrifically diced. At the risk of going to jail (or getting banned from [REDACTED]), I will say this re: balance: The general consensus in [REDACTED] was that Axis was better in the Rommel game, while Allies were better in the Torch game, but both scenarios were somewhat even to the point where games would usually be minor/major victories, with totals only occurring when there was either a skill gap or atrocious dice (which I think is something we're all used to).

Thanks for the thoughtful response. Yes, when playing a new game solo, there are bound to be mistakes and missed opportunities. But, that is how we learn, and by extension, help others to avoid those same pitfalls. I agree that the balance seems fairly even. The dice do play a larger role here than in typical A&A games, though, as hot or cold dice with mines can absolutely decide the game. Even if land mines hit a little higher than average, that can win the game for the Axis. If they go cold, the Allies simply march to Tunis.

I agree that in mechanics and concepts, this is definitely a campaign level game (what I call the 'theater' games you noted). I like seeing a campaign level addition as there hasn't been one since... ooh... what was the last one added, D-Day or Bulge? Either way it's been a while so it's nice to see the once triplets become a quartet sub-series in the family. I was on the fence about spending the $90 USD to procure a copy but I think watching your three videos, I've been convinced to take the dive on it.

Third time lucky. This time I believe it was flawless. However a clarification is needed regarding land mines. Turn 10 at 26:40 two Shermans crossed the border to Benghazi with no mines going off. Now if I place mines on eastern border in Benghazi wouldn’t these mines protect me from both Tobruk and Bir Hacheim? If so the there could have been a possibility for those two Shermans being pushed back and Benghazi would not have fallen. This delay would be enough for UK being one turn short getting to Tripoli.
@TheHilltopPillbox4 ай бұрын
It is an interesting question. The rule book says that the mines "protect the entire border between two territories, even if it's not a straight line." (pg. 14) I placed them both on the border between Tobruk and Benghazi, so the southern territory, with Bir Hacheim, would not be affected. It's a small boundary, but there were no mines there. I think the way it is written means that the minefield has a limit of the shared boundary. Otherwise, I think it might be too easy to stack mines in places like that. This also makes the Shermans very important to keep alive! Thanks for watching and commenting!
@georgebrunacky93214 ай бұрын
@@TheHilltopPillbox sorry I meant eastern border. Still from Benghazi perspective I’m mining the whole eastern border regardless how many territories are on the other side. There are quite a few instances on the board where one border is adjacent to two or 3 territories (Algiers for example). I still believe if I mine one side of my territory that means the whole stretch. I understand you put separate mines on east, west south or north but not separate on one side.
@TheHilltopPillbox4 ай бұрын
@@georgebrunacky9321 Trust me, I understand the confusion! (see my first two games!) But, I checked with the makers of the game, and I played it correctly. The mines are specific to one particular shared border between two, and only two, territories. If I wanted to block Bir Hacheim, I would have to put another mine token in that small space in the south. Even that doesn't stop the Shermans from blitzing around to the western border of Benghazi, though! Thanks for the comments!

ABOUT 5 YEARS AGO - I bought two A&A Variant Games on EBAY - The first one was " A BRIDGE TOO FAR" (Arnhem) The Brit 30 Corp drives up that single road thru the towns/bridges etc. to get up to Arnhem in 10 turns to rescue the Brit Paras - We actually played this one and the Brit Paras got wiped out on Turn 9 before 30 Corp got there ! There are other ways (minor roads) to get there and HOW/WHERE the German blocks does make a difference ! ALSO the Allies have LOTS of AIR and HOW/WHERE they use them makes a difference too ! These both games were Print & Play too !

Just ordered this game, guadalcanal (after it seems like a decade of wanting it but not the price of the old print) and the 1940 global neoprene map (pre-order for November). I am EXTREMELY excited to watch this video. Me and my war games bud are going to play it some time this fall when we do our annual college friends bro-fest where there are no wives or kids allowed. Yeah, the other guys will make fun of us (like they do every year) but the part that always cracks us up when we play A&A is that they keep checking in to see how the war is going. They're secret fans you see... Anyway, this year we will be playing both this game and Guadalcanal for the first time. THANK YOU RENEGADE GAMES! We are freaking PUMPED!

@@LobsterStrategyBros Well, it is definitely something that you will build over time. Think of it as a hobby, like hunting or fishing, or even cars. You start small and build up. There will be sales, people looking to get rid of stuff, and others who will simply donate to your cause. Give yourself a couple of years to get it to where you want it. Spend a little money here and there, but also use some cheap paint to help show the more advanced units. Once you have that, you can play the game, but then add little bits here and there as they come along. I have been working on GW36 for a few years, now, and I still don't have every single unit. Of course, you will work to get units you really want, and then you can slowly get the ones that others may want to play with. It is a journey, but the nice thing is that the stuff you buy never expires or runs out...unlike many other hobbies. Enjoy!

ABOUT 5 YEARS AGO - I bought off EBAY two A&A Variants (Print & Play) - The 2nd was OPERATION SEA-LION (1940) with the Germans landing along the Brit's South Coast between Plymouth and Dover The Germans have to capture those two towns , build up troops, tanks, art. and then drive up to LONDON and capture BOTH SIDES with the THAMES River to cross ! The German TANKS are Amphbs and have to be built up over time (10 turn game) ! The Germans ALSO have PARAS & Air-Landing Troops (Gliders) ! The Germans ALSO have MASSIVE Air and Bombers too outnumbering the Brits about two to one so it MATTERS WHAT/HOW tou use them as the Brits are getting more troops off the map edges !
