After doing my first controlled Slash Grind a week ago, some of my fear of the coping has gone away. The thing that "unlocked" slash grinds for me was to look at the board longer, so I can actually see the nose of the board (and more) go over the coping. I'm hoping that looking at the board longer might unlock the Axle Stall as well. So I went to my local skatepark and practiced "axle stalls" on a bank with a tape coping :)
My main focus was actually to try to "lean back" during the stall to put more weight on the heel side of the board. I sometimes did something that felt good, but I didn't really crack the code.
