You might need a big bead or a tack stuck on the end of the dowels that makes the birds pop up and down.

OOOH - cross-cutting on the bandsaw against the fence - EDGY ! Wouldn't the mitre saw (or mitre gauge on the bandsaw) be a much safer option ?
