As a new woodturner, I find these videos great. Many thanks.

Very enjoyable and informative video Colwin. I much prefer the camera angle from your side of the lathe, as watching the angle of the tool and which part of the cutting edge is being used, helps my understanding and hopefully improves my technique. Looking forward to your next video.

Always do enjoy your demonstrations. It's fascinating watching how you go about things. One habit I realise I have got into since starting to watch these series of videos is taking out the tool rest whenever it gets in the way. Such a simple thing but I feel that it has improved my usage fo the lathe. Thank you and am looking forward to seeing the results from this root ball.

Thanks bunch. I'm just getting into turning large vessels and this was helpful. I'm Using a large Jameson hollower and a Steady rest. I sell my pieces at craft show and farmers markets. The first question my customers ask is, "can you put water in it"?. Funnily enough a colleague of mine has a booth close to mine who makes large vessels bored out with a 3' glass vessel inside. They are not so artful but they sell better I think. Your piece here is going to be beautiful, looking forward to the next video. Jim, Crafted in Montana, Bozeman MT.

Loving hearing you still get excited by a nice piece of timber even after all your experience. You are doing our club (zoom) meeting next month so looking forward to it. Cheers.Stuart

Why not a roughing gouge instead of the bowl gouge for the initial shaping? Thank you for your channel!
@axminster3 жыл бұрын
Hi PBpleased, the following reply is from Colwin - "A roughing gouges full name is spindle roughing gouge, it has a flat face unlike the bowl gouge that has a convex face. Presenting a flat face roughing gouge to a bowl blank will be incredibly dangerous, as the orientation of a bowl blank means you have two areas of end grain hitting the tool. Generally something breaks, either tool rest, tool or hand, best case the tool will fly. Instead drop the bowl gouge handle down low and rough the bowl with this."

@@axminster Just to clarify, a roughing gouge should not be used if it can contact end grain. The end grain is harder to cut and needs a different shape on the tool’s tip? Sorry, I’m not even a beginner yet and am loving this channel for my initial education.

☀️Nice work mate! This piece will be gorgeous 🤩👌🏾 Why did you not slide the chuck/motor unit towards you for the hollowing part?🤷🏻♂️ Good video n very very appreciated🙏

Hi Valter, the following reply is from Colwin - "When it came to the bulk of the hollowing, the headstock was brought up towards me, but that was done off camera before part 2."

I'm wondering why, when you are sharpening a Bowl Gouge, that you call it a Chisel, as you are aware, it is not a Chisel.

Just cant understand why people wont use handplaner. That wood is so off palance. Its easy tool and easy way to get off some wood
