This is amazingly brave. I recall AHA saying a few years ago that we should get used to the idea that: 'We're it. There is no spiritual realm. Perfect yourself while you are alive'. As one person said after attending a Christian exploration programme: 'For the first time in my life I feel normal'.

I have been aware of this incredibly brave, intelligent, remarkable woman and her work for a number of years, but never fully understood what she went through and accomplished until I read Infidel, which I just finished. I grew up in New England, and am Caucasian. My childhood hero was Harriet Tubman and I never tired of reading and re-reading Runaway Slave. I was so moved by her bravery: she risked her own life and liberty many times, to bring others along the Underground Railroad to freedom. Now, many decades on, I have found another hero in the person of Ayaan Hirsi Ali. May she be blessed and protected and able to continue her sacred mission for years to come. Her commitment and tenacity to do what's right in the face of so much (at times very dangerous) adversity is a rare thing. I don't know the exact quote but Harriet Tubman was purported to have said that she freed 1000 slaves and she could have freed 1000 more if only they knew they were slaves. Perhaps there is some kind of parallel there for women who are oppressed by Islam and their families/culture.

I find it interesting how people spew so much negativity and even hatred on Ayaan, just because she "dared" to explore Christianity and EVEN!!! liking it so far... Its really beyond me. They cheer her up as an independent thinker only when she is in-line with some preconceived ideas and stays within the atheist framework. It's so disappointing that she had to go back to religion after a brief episode of atheism. The funniest part is that she likes her new God better than the old. Does she believe in Allah and Elohim/Yahweh as separate gods of which only one is to be worshipped? Most Muslims would at least agree that Christians and Jews have the same God. For monotheists there is only one living God - the one who created the world.
