Ayahuasca, Trauma & Relationships - Dr Gabor Maté - Smart Couple 134
relationshipschool.net/podcast/ayahuasca-trauma-relationships-dr-gabor-mate-sc-134/
There’s been a surge in alternative, traditional methods to healing our deepest wounds. One of the main approaches that has gained popularity here in America is the use of the traditional South American brew, Ayahuasca, in guided ceremonies.
Dr Gabor Maté, renowned addiction expert, and writer, is back for a second conversation to discuss the benefits & cautions to using Ayahuasca. In this conversation, we also discuss many natural (non-medicinal) methods to healing trauma through the power of present-moment awareness practices, safe relationships and creating space for healing.
GUEST BIO
A renowned speaker, and bestselling author, Dr. Gabor Maté is highly sought after for his expertise on a range of topics including addiction, stress and childhood development. Rather than offering quick-fix solutions to these complex issues, Dr. Maté weaves together scientific research, case histories, and his own insights and experience to present a broad perspective that enlightens and empowers people to promote their own healing and that of those around them.
For twelve years Dr. Maté worked in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside with patients challenged by hard-core drug addiction, mental illness and HIV, including at Vancouver’s Supervised Injection Site. With over 20 years of family practice and palliative care experience and extensive knowledge of the latest findings of leading-edge research, Dr. Maté is a sought-after speaker and teacher, regularly addressing health professionals, educators, and lay audiences throughout North America and internationally.
As an author, Dr. Maté has written several bestselling books including the award-winning In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts: Close Encounters with Addiction; When the Body Says No: The Cost of Hidden Stress (published in the United States as When the Body Says No: Exploring the Stress-Disease Connection); and Scattered Minds: A New Look at the Origins and Healing of Attention Deficit Disorder (published in the United States as Scattered: How Attention Deficit Disorder Originates and What you Can Do About It), and co-authored Hold on to Your Kids. His works have been published internationally in twenty languages.
Dr. Maté is the co-founder of Compassion for Addiction, a new non-profit that focuses on addiction. He is also an advisor of Drugs over Dinner. Dr. Maté has received the Hubert Evans Prize for Literary Non-Fiction; an Honorary Degree (Law) from the University of Northern British Columbia; an Outstanding Alumnus Award from Simon Fraser University; the 2012 Martin Luther King Humanitarian Award from Mothers Against Teen Violence; and the 2012 AccolAIDS award for Health Promotion and Harm Reduction, Positive Living Society of B.C.. He is an adjunct professor in the Faculty of Criminology, Simon Fraser University.

Rachel Heavens Gabor did not say everything about Ahyawaska. I was very ill from it and my Freind a health guru and a picture of health died doing Ahyawaska (he did many times but the last time killed him). he was not the only one who lost his life. to Ahyawaska google it. in addition a shaman in Peru told me to his view western People are addicted to Ahyawaska in the indigenous culture only a shaman takes Ahyawaska. it calls the vine of death for a reason.

MA AD In Colombia and Brazil, 10o00’s of normal people drink ayahuasca every day in many different traditions and communities. Aya does not kill, other things WHEN drinking aya may do that. It’s called the wine of death because you can die to your past and thus be reborn. Please educate yourself

I have reached a pivotal pount in my life, continue with the slow suicide I've been descending into, or break free from the bondage of drug addiction and get to the root of need to self medicate, repeated childhood trauma from foster homes, to finally my father whom was acting As both parents, 2 different personalities. How F'd up that was then, and how much it's affected me and my life choices. Thanks again Dr. Gabor. 👤

thank-you, glad I gave this a watch. Gabor only just came up on my radar this past week. Helping me understand my PTSD a little more, is already much more than I did last week. Coincidentally my tablet is resting on one of Gabor's books mentioned in this interview. "When the body says no" if that's not a little signal to read it I don't know what is, just picked it up today! Thanks again

I think Gabor is amazing and a breath of fresh air. But I wish his umbrella for trauma would extend to what happens to us as adults. His example of being separated from his mother during the war, to save his life, implies horrendous trauma for his mother. War and horrible accidents are obvious examples. Also, there are psychopaths and malignant narracists that are incredibly good at manipulating people, many who are adults but the result is tremendous trauma. Hitler was one of those people who traumatized his family, many of who were full on adults. Not to negate childhood trauma, but it's not everything.

I strongly want to disagree with Mr. Maté about "not being in the moment" when we encounter rejection and hardship with somebody. Blaming it on the past it's just a way to tell somebody, well you have to work on yourself, it's not your partner letting you down or being hard on you, it's because of the past. Yours or theirs. This is simply so true as if I saw the sun shine yesterday, I will definitely see it shine today and tomorrow. I want to make it very clear for everybody who was hurt in their relationships and start to doubt their feelings and capacity to be in the moment. The truth is, if you feel hurt by your partner, it is not your past that made them hurt you. It is not your fault of any kind. It's simply a person letting you down or hurting you. You are more in the moment as anyone could be, because there is both pain and joy at all moments of life. Your mind is not sick or needs treatment if someone treats you like jerk. It simply shows you how they act and what they feel for you. Asking or expecting for the rejected ones to have compasion with those hurting them is like demanding them to turn the second cheek to be slapped on.

you're confusing fault with personal responsibility
@sumari972
@sumari972 4 жыл бұрын
@@JaysonGaddis Jayson, use your ears. He says that all problems we encounter in adult relationships are caused by childhood trauma. You asked about substance abuse and early trauma and he extended to "all problems in relationships". This is offending the ones who reach out to their partners and have to face coldness, lack of care or abuse. Personal responsability means there is a duty of acting and thinking according to your intention, would you say it is a fault towards yourself? For me fault means duty. What do you think?

@@sumari972 we could say that you have some responsibility if you stay in the relationship
@sumari972
@sumari972 3 жыл бұрын
@@windshipboyd6600 of course everybody is responsible for themselves, but there is not everybody on his own and alone if abandoned. If you got children, you have to see that they get food and care and love, and if their father is attacking you, and you do the same to him, you tear apart all of their trust and confidence.
