Both Ayala and Chino Hills also have competitive middle school drumlines that feed into their high school programs. And if i'm not mistaken, the staff of the high school programs help out with the middle school lines.

Context for SoCal Band scene from someone who marched and directed in that scene! We start VERY late comparatively. The first week of fall band marching band is technically last week of September. This video seems to be from the WBA super regional which tends to be Mid October. So it’s still early season-ish. 3-4 weeks competitively. Ayala, Chino Hills having this high standard of percussion performance has been a thing even when I was a marching member back in the late 2000s. Other staples in the WBA and SCSBOA circuit are Arcadia and Vista Murrieta for percussion. The season for most SoCal marching band circuits end just before thanksgiving (we used to go until first week of December that was awful).

The Ayala video was from their first show and Chino Hills was from this past weekend which was their second show. They both still have about a month left in their season.

I think Darren played snare for RCC in 2009. He's been with Ayala for a while and is an arranger at Dark Sky as well.

These two high school lines are pretty much drum corp ready! Amazing chops for kids in high school. Unfortunately most high school lines aren’t a 16th as good as this especially in the south! Hats off to both lines and great support staff to get them to this level!

Last year's Ayala quad line all graduated. so the quad line are all first year players.

I was part of Canyon Hills Jr High 2003(feeds to Ayala) and we were the only jr. high that competed in WGI Scholastic A and even made finals. We probably had just as many practices as we did when I went to Ayala. Just showing you the percussion training and work ethic the staff instilled even at an early age.

Darren Vanderpool not sure his background exactly perc caption head Ernie is the cymbal instructor Sean Gordon is the music writer and caption head I believe of the FE. Ayala competed in 3 circuits WBA BOA and CSBC starting Oct 14 and we intend to end Nov 18 main band director is Tim Trost.

Hey Evan! I’m almost 100% suite the guy you were talking about is David Parker. He wrote a book of snare solos called “Snare Food.” Wouldn’t be surprised if the herta piece you were talking about was one of his solos. Anyways, his KZbin is Parker Percussion.

high income area, parents pay high taxes, performing arts get a ton of funding. that and middle school feeder programs yes

Both high schools are 99% funded by the boosters (parents) and local donations. School district only pay for transportation to and from completions. usually only covers 2/3 of the competitions for the season.@@AznAfroMan513

Idk about Ayala, but Chino kids don't even have to do concert band in the spring. They just do marching band and indoor, which is insane honestly.

Yep, Ayala kids don't have to do Concert/Jazz - they have to do something though... The tendency is drumline kids will do Indoor Percussion, to stay current or get better with their drumming skills. There are some who will do Jazz *and* Indoor back2back right after Marching band season ends. Small note - there is a Chino HS and *Chino Hills* HS in the same school district. Chino HS competes in a different circuit. Chino Hills HS competes in the same circuit as Ayala HS, although this year they only competed against each other once in this season (1st Show in Music In Motion). But ya, last year's Top 2 WGI PSW winners came from the same city.🎉🎉🎉
